Demontrez Mahone, a senior at Alabama State University, was one of five music education ma-jors across the country to attend the prestigious Thurgood Mar-shall Teacher Quality Retention Program held in Houston, Texas, July 9-21. “It was amazing. The high-impact professional develop-ment I received will better equip me in the classroom,” said Ma-hone. “The conference cemented my passion to lead young people.” TQRP offers an intense two-week summer institute that focuses on males attending Historically Black

Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). “There aren’t many black male teachers in the public education school system,” Mahone said. Afri-can-American men repre-sent only two percent of the nation’s teachers, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Mahone, who plans to teach for a year after graduation and then attend graduate school, was one of 112 TQRP fellows from 52 universities partici-pating in this years event.
