U.S. SAVINGS BONDS

By: Development Director, [email protected]

Since 1935, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed legislation creating the first "baby bond," United States Savings Bonds have encouraged saving and a broad participation by Americans in government financing. From the Series E bond, that contributed billions of dollars to World War II financing, to today's electronic EE, the Savings Bond Program has a rich history of changing to meet the needs of the American investor. We have recently been asked if the Charitable Foundation would accept Series EE bonds as charitable gifts with no tax

implications for the donor. Unfortunately any attempt to transfer ownership of bonds will usually trigger all of the untaxed interest income that has accumulated. Another option for maturing Series EE and Series HH bonds is a charitable bequest because so much of their value is attributable to untaxed interest income, which constitutes income in respect of a decedent (IRD). Including a gift of savings bonds in your will or trust provides both estate tax and income tax deductions. An individual with a charitable intent can apply 100% of the bonds’ value to a specific charitable purpose. However, specific instructions in the decedent’s will for disposition of the savings bonds or other IRD assets are required. Without such instructions your estate could suffer adverse tax consequences. Additional options to alleviate the impact of accumulated interest on annual income could be a tax-exempt charitable remainder trust or transfer of ownership of bonds to a revocable trust. If you have savings bonds that have matured or are about to mature, please talk with your financial advisors and family to determine what will best serve your wishes. If you would like to include the Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation in your estate with a gift of savings bonds, please contact the development office at (210) 568-3206 for correct wording.

BST FALL RADIO ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN

By: Public Relations Manager, [email protected]

This fall the Marketing Department kicked off a radio advertising campaign in an effort to increase our Blue Skies brand awareness and increase occupancy in Independent Living, Memory Care and Skilled Nursing. The campaign will air on the iHeartRadio stations which include: WOAI-AM 1200, KAJA 97.3 (KJ97), KXXM 96.1 (Mix96), KZEP 104.5, KQXT 101.9 (Q101), and KTKR-AM 760 (The Ticket). On these stations, Blue Skies will be sponsoring the traffic and weather reports for a period of 10 weeks beginning the week of Aug 10. Every week, our traffic or weather sponsorship will be heard approximately six times a week on each station. The sponsorship will include a 15-second commercial advertising Independent Living or Skilled Nursing. To increase awareness of Freedom House, we are airing an additional 30-second commercial on WOAI-AM 1200 during the month of Aug and on KQXT 101.9 during the month of Sep. Our on-going radio advertising for Independent Living includes Texas Public Radio, KAHL 1310 and 930 AM The Answer. Also, don’t forget to catch our interview on the “Ask The Experts” radio show on Sunday, Aug 23 at 2:30pm on 930 AM The Answer. Our very own Director of Marketing, Ilene Kitchens and Director of Corporate Compliance, Kathie Estrada will educate listeners about the benefits of living in a CCRC.

NIX PRACTITIONER WELLNESS SCRIPT By: Raynell Odom, RN MSN FNP-BC / Nix Blue Skies Clinics

Sudden Hearing Loss - If you woke up one morning and couldn’t see out of your right eye, chances are you would make a very quick trip to the eye doctor! Unfortunately, we don’t treat our ears with the same urgency! When sudden hearing

6 Deadline: Friday, Aug 21 @ 4:30pm - [email protected]

loss occurs, the inclination is to believe the ear canal is blocked with earwax. The temptation is to try some home remedies, and postpone seeing a professional for the loss of hearing. An ear canal which is plugged with earwax gives one the sensation some foreign body is in the ear. It feels like a pencil eraser or a cork is in the ear. Sudden hearing loss occurs very rapidly, over a period of hours to days. It usually affects adults between the ages of 30-60 years old and most sudden hearing loss occurs in only one ear. There are approximately 4,000 cases of sudden hearing loss diagnosed in one year. The cause of sudden hearing loss can only be diagnosed in 10-15% of those cases. Sudden hearing loss is a condition for which there can be many causes. Oftentimes, the cause is never found and is categorized as idiopathic hearing loss (lay terminology “we don’t know what the cause is”). A blockage of the cochlear artery is one cause for sudden hearing loss. This must be addressed quickly (within 48 hours preferably) to avoid permanent hearing damage. An autoimmune inner ear disease can cause the body to attack the ear anatomy, and is often treated with oral steroid medications. A viral illness can also attack the inner ear, more specifically, the cochlea, and cause sudden hearing loss. In this case, supportive care is rendered until the virus has run its course and normal hearing has restored. The moral of the story is, don’t ignore sudden hearing loss. Make an appointment with your primary care provider who can do an exam, order initial laboratory studies and facilitate an urgent visit to the ENT! Take care of your ears…you only have two of them!

RESIDENTS’ CORNER

RESIDENTS CONCERT SERIES By: Ginny Hallager

WOW! They did it again. The Anthony Bazzani Jazz Trio raised the roof on Sunday, Jul 26, as they performed here at Blue Skies for the third “Jazz After 3” concert. Anthony Bazzani led this trio on the piano with his virtuosity and unique style. He arranged melodies from “Phantom of the Opera” just for this concert, and chose jazz classics well-known to our audience. He also threw in a little Willie Nelson and Hank Williams with his own twist. He was joined by drummer Dean Macomber, who wowed us with solos. You could actually hear the melody coming out - Amazing. This year they were joined by Tyler Jackson on bass, a newcomer to the San Antonio music scene. His pedigree includes playing with some of the great artists of our time; Ray Price, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard are among the names you will recognize immediately. The toe-tapping and head-nodding were non-stop the entire afternoon. How privileged we are to have such talent at our doorstep here in San Antonio. We have one more concert in our 2015 series. Our friend, “Sasha” Moutouzkine will return on Sunday, Oct 25, to share his artistry on our beautiful grand piano. Mark your calendars for this special event. If you wish to assist with the expenses associated with the production of the high- quality concerts we have enjoyed, please contact Joy Woodruff and make a donation through the Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation. Remember to indicate the Concert Series as the destination for your gift.

I hope a lot of you have missed us; but never fear, we’ll be back Saturday, Sep 12, in the Legacy Room at BST East. The fun begins at 7pm. If you’re riding the bus from BST West, sign up at the Front Desk and be ready to depart at 6:30pm. Or, if you’re dining in the Sky Lounge, just come on down when you’ve finished dinner. Our monthly Sing-a-longs will continue to be the second Saturday of each month. In Sep the band will play some “rock n roll,” and perhaps some Beatles songs. If you haven’t been to any of our Sing-a-longs, and you play a stringed instrument you might want to bring it along because the words and chords are projected on a screen. If you want to know more about ukulele lessons or practice, please give me a call or email me at [email protected]. Hope to see you next Month!

FOLLOW THE GENERAL By: Ren Vandesteeg

“ . . . But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15. The Holy Bible.

This is short and to the point. Many great generals were succinct with their words - they got to the point, made their point and moved on. General Joshua was one of the best. He challenged the nation he led to follow his example. Because we live in a world of technology, I’d like to change one word from the general’s statement and apply it to our lives. Here goes: “As for me and my mouse, we will serve the Lord.” If you own a computer, where do you go with your mouse?

By the way, did you know Joshua is the only general who wrote a book in the Bible? Hmmm…

DARTS ASSOCIATION By: Tom Carter

A regulation dart board has been donated and installed in the Billiard Association/Dabblers room. I’m interested in forming a BST West Darts Association with regularly scheduled tournaments. If you’re interested in throwing darts, please contact me or email [email protected]. If we have enough participants, we’ll meet to decide when we throw, type of games played, etc. To practice throwing or have a personal game, check out the billiard closet key from the Front Desk, and use the darts in the large jar on the closet shelf. See you at the toe line.

SPORTS, GAMES AND SCORES

22 Deadline: Friday, Aug 21 @ 4:30pm - [email protected]

GOLF RANGE CLOSED SIGN By: Don Hallager

When the “RANGE CLOSED” sign is on the cement practice pad, and the rope is across the golf shack ball rack, please do not hit balls on the golf range. The signs are up for that day to allow the mowers to cut the grass without any balls being on the range. The golf balls are picked up the day before so there won’t be any more balls buried in the dirt when the mower cuts the range. Just because you don’t see mowing operations occurring doesn’t mean you should hit balls when the sign is up. Thank you for your cooperation.

BST WEST PICKLEBALL ASSOCIATION By: Tom Carter

Join us to play the fastest growing sport in the USA and have some fun with other BST residents and guests. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-11am, we play indoors at the Medina Base Fitness Center, meeting in the BST West Main Lobby at 8:30am to caravan to the base. On Saturdays, 8-10am, we play at the BST West tennis courts. Pickleball is played on a small court (about one-half of a tennis court), and provides seniors an ideal venue for getting exercise. Gender or strength is no advantage in this sport. We have the required paddles, balls, nets, etc., so come out, and we’ll show you how easy it is to play. For further information, contact Ralph Comer, Helen Vanderneck, Don or Debbie Christian or Tom Carter.

NATIONAL MAH JONGG LEAGUE By: Gayl Ganskow

Unraveling the mystery of the tiles comes with patience and practice. We use the National Mah Jongg League method of play. It's also known as the American version. After learning to interpret the Card of Hands, the game develops. What in the world is the Charleston? Bams, Craks and Dots are the main building tiles, but we also have Winds, Flowers, Dragons, and Jokers that play major roles. Come and enjoy! We play three times a week, no sign up, just show up. BST WEST BILLIARD ASSOCIATION NEWS By: Robert Yanke

9-Ball, Tuesday Jul 28: Today there were so many luck shots on the nine- ball that I am only identifying the winners not how they won! 1st game Ski won and 2nd game Pro won. 3rd game Dandy won, 4th game Irish won, 5th game T-man won, 6th game wild Bill won, 7th game T-man won, 8th game Irish won, 9th game T-man won advancing undefeated to the finals. In the lower level, Ski won six games in a row including the 1st game of the finals! However, in the final game he set up T-man for game and tournament! Congratulations T-man!

8-Ball, Saturday, Aug 1: With 10 players for 8-ball we decided to choose partners. 1st game Wild Bill/Big John beat Chicago/Tomcat and 2nd game was Pro/Flieger over Ski/Dandy 3rd game was Irish/Lite over Wild Bill/Big John. 4th game was Pro/Flieger making a five ball run to put Irish/Lite down, and advance to the finals. However, Irish /Lite advanced to the finals after winning in the lower level

25 Deadline: Friday, Aug 21 @ 4:30pm - [email protected]

and beat Pro/Flieger two quick games to take the tournament!! Congratulations Lite/Irish!

9-Ball, Tuesday, Aug 4: We had 12 players so no gory details. There were complaints about the 8 minute time limit; so next week we will vote on 8 minutes or 9! 1st game today was won by Dandy/Chicago, 2nd by Ski//Wild Bill and 3rd by Dandy/ Chicago. Ski/Wild Bill advanced undefeated to the finals in the 4th game. Lower level was all Tommygun/Dutch winning three quick games to meet the unbeaten Ski/Wild Bill. The first game of the final series was won by the challengers with a good “kiss” shot, but then Ski/ Wild Bill came back with a good bank to take the tournament! Congratulations Ski/Wild Bill

8-Ball, Saturday, Aug 8: Only 6 players today. Ski won the 1st game with a good cut and Tommy won the 2nd with a setup. 3rd game Ski won with a setup and 4th game Tommy lagged for the win. 5th game Tommy won with a long shot to advance undefeated. Lower level it was Wild Bill all the way with three quick wins to meet the undefeated Tommy. But, Tommy did not relinquish his undefeated status with a small run to take game and Tournament. Congratulations Tommygun!

A note to kill the rumor that women players are unwelcome to our tournaments! Any Lady who wants to watch and/or play is as welcome as the Blue Bonnets in spring! Games are 1:30pm Saturday and 2pm Tuesday. “Pro”
