event where I have to give a speech without a microphone. I think even some of the people at the Home Depot across the street stopped shopping to listen when he yelled, “Listen Up.” Thanks Jim.

San Diego British Car Day is Saturday, October 12, at Cancer Survivor’s Park, Spanish Landing East, on San Diego Bay. This location is such a great venue for a car show; it is the reason I moved our Concours d’Elegance to there from the west side. Registration links are on the Club Members Page.

I hate ending my column on a negative note, so I will try to put a positive spin on this. Nominations are still open for two board positions in 2020: First Vice President, in Charge of Activities (you have to want to plan and execute events or coordinate and supervise others planning and executing events); and Club Secretary, in charge of correspondence and board-meeting minutes (just spell my name right in the minutes). And yes, you may nominate yourself. So far, these two positions are still open because no one has offered themselves up to fill them. If you want to run, let a board member know. If one of us asks you to run, please say yes. If no one submits their name for nomination, we’ll have an open call at the election luncheon. If still no one speaks up, we’ll just have to stumble through the next year without these positions being filled. Hopefully, that won’t have too negative an effect on club operations.

Speaking of the Election Luncheon, registration is now open on the Club Member’s page. This year we

are holding it at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center at San Diego State University, hosted by Jim

Hallameyer. Remember, voting is in person, so you have to attend to vote.

Until then, take care.

September might have been hot and humid, but no one seemed to mind too much during our tour of the Allen Airways Flying Museum at Gillespie Field. All but sixty of you missed out on this incredibly fantastic tour. Thanks to Jim Hallameyer for putting together such a great event. The great man himself, Bill Allen, gave the tour. You could tell from his enthusiasm he sure was proud of his collection. Interestingly, the Ferrari club was holding an event at a hanger across the way, but you couldn’t really tell it was an organized event because they parked their cars all willy-nilly while we lined up our Jags in formation on the grass in front of the museum’s hanger. Those Ferrari owners could learn a thing or two from us Jag owners about presentation. After the tour, no one got lost on the short drive to Phil’s BBQ in Santee. Phil’s gave us the air conditioned, covered patio for our private luncheon. Remind me to have Jim Harkins get ya’ll’s attention at any

Allen Airways Flying Museum Tour

Sixty SDJC members and their guests joined together on Saturday, September 14th, for a fabulous tour of the Allen Airways Flying Museum at Gillespie Field in El Cajon. Bill Allen, who established the museum, led our two-hour tour. The museum houses a diverse collection of items including beautifully restored antique aircraft, a significant library, aviation art and rare posters, and automobiles. The museum is located in a complex of hangars at the airfield.

Bill entertained us with his descriptions of the various collections and many personal stories from his experience as a pilot. The hangars hold more than just his aircraft. Display rooms, a bar, lounges and even a movie theater are included in the facilities. The weather was a little warm, but skies were clear, blue and sunny.

Following the visit of the museum, our group headed north a short 10-minute drive to Phil’s BBQ in Santee for lunch and good conversation. The response to this event resulted in one of the largest turnouts we have experienced for our monthly excursions. Clearly, a return visit next year is in order.

CalClubs ReUnion ‘19

What is the best part of owning a Jaguar? ……Driving it of course! Thanks to Mark Mayuga, JOCLA President and Southwest Regional Director, eight SDJC members had a grand opportunity during the Cal Clubs Re-Union! My friend, Celia Hunter, and I left Carlsbad Thursday morning to meet Dave Allen for lunch at the Pier in Ventura (unfortunately due to school and appointments, Marie and Matt could not accompany Dave). After lunch, we convoyed to the hotel in Morro Bay and immediately were greeted by Jaguar enthusiasts from other California Jaguar Clubs. Thursday evening’s event was a tour of Tom Meinhold’s British Motor Sports restoration facility in San Louis Obispo, complete with cocktails! Dave Allen offered to drive, and a lively drive it was with Charlie Hallums, his son “Charlie”, Celia and I. Afterward, a group walked a couple of blocks to the SLO Farmers Market. While some chose to eat street food, we took advantage of Mike and Peggy Loper’s suggestion to have dinner at NOVO’s Creekside dining before our drive back to Morro Bay.

Friday was yet another beautiful day for our drive to Hearst Castle, followed by a fun lunch at Ragged Point Inn. Sadly, Celia and I missed Clive Collins’ XK Motorsport Restoration Shop tour, due to poor time management. However, I heard glowing reports on Clive and Rhodora Collin’s incredible hospitality, complete with goody bags for everyone! We are pleased to have Clive and Rhodora as SDJC members. Later in the evening we re-grouped at Tognazzini’s Dockside Restaurant. I was especially pleased to sit with dear friends Jay and Ann Stamets who left San Diego a few years ago to move north to be near family. Jay and Ann have always maintained their SDJC membership and it’s always a delight to see them as I have so many memories of Grant and I spending time with them at various venues.

Options for Saturday were either a Rally or Scenic Tour – no rally for me, just a leisurely Scenic Tour to Santa Margarita for lunch at the famous Pozo Saloon. At one point, Dave pulled over to check to see if we had seen the Saloon. Little did we know it was five more miles of narrow twisty roads before the road ENDED – and there it was – The Pozo Saloon! We had an opportunity to sit with Les Hamilton, President of JCNA, as well as James and Elizabeth Waite, Dave, Celia, and Mark Mayuga. What a fantastic lunch – so many conversations at once. Ask Dave Allen how he liked the Pozo Martini (beer with 3 olives!). Finally, it was time to return of Morro Bay for a casual walk around Morro Bay before meeting the group at Dom’s Breakers Café for a delicious dinner. It was interesting to observe how so many people, who had not met prior to this event, were laughing, chatting, talking about Jags and honestly just having fun!

Everyone seemed to be up early Sunday morning, preparing for the drive home. We had such a fun adventure and highly recommend you consider joining the next Car Club Reunion! It is a fantastic opportunity to drive our cats, see the beautiful landscape of California, meet new interesting people, indulge in amazing fresh seafood, have a cocktail or two, and feel blessed that we have these occasions. Thanks again to Mark Mayuga for the countless hours of planning that made this such an outstanding adventure.

Till Next Time,

October 2019 By Pete Rieth, Chief Judge, San Diego Jaguar Club

This article provides information about the Jaguar Clubs of North America (JCNA) and SDJC Concours

d’Elegance Programs to help you understand more about this aspect of Jaguar ownership. If you are a seasoned concours Entrant, I hope this will help you enjoy it more. If you have never participated, I hope this will encourage you to join in the fun.

2019 SDJC Concours Analysis: I provided a list of the provisional scores for the 35 judged Entries at our Concours in the August Jaguar Tracks. They are now FINAL. This month I took a deeper look at the Entrants, Entries, Judges and other facets of our Concours and came up with these interesting facts:

• There were 64 Entries registered for our July 13th Concours, 35 Judged Entries and 25 for Display.

• 4 judged Entries were non-JCNA, hence not listed in the JCNA Online Scoring System of competitive standings. There was one no-show in Champion Division, two in Driven Division and one in Class S02/MOD (Hence, only 35 were judged of the 39 entered).

• For JCNA standings, there were 17 SDJC judged Entries (55%), 9 Jaguar Owners Club of LA Entries (29%), 3 Inland Empire Jaguar Club Entries (10%), 1 Jaguar Club of Virginia Entry (3%) and 1 Jaguar Club of Southern Arizona (3%) Entry. [In round percentage numbers…..for you higher math wizards.]

• Of the 35 Entries that were judged, 17 were in Champion Division, 2 were in Special Division and 16 were in Driven Division.

• A 2016 F-Type was the newest Entry and a 1952 XK 120 OTS was the oldest Entry, spanning 65 years inclusive.

• One Entry received a perfect score this year: Brian and Lisa Ellis’ 1999 XJ8 VDP in Champion Division. Craig Wright’s 1965 E-Type FHC took highest Driven Division score (9.998). Keiichi Yamamoto scored highest in Special Division with his 1955 XK 140 FHC (9.992).

• There was one class with 5 Entries, D02/E1.

• There were two classes with 3 Entries, C09/XJ, and D10/K8.

• There were seven classes with 2 Entries, C05/E1, C11/J8, C13/JS, C14/XK, D4/E3, D11/XK and S2/MOD.

• There were ten classes with only 1 Entry, all receiving uncontested First Place Awards.

• Nine Entries received First Place awards while competing against others in their Class.

• Nine Entries received Second Place awards while competing against others in their Class.

• Three Entries received Third Place awards while competing against others in their Class.

• There were 26 Certified Judges (Including 4 present or past Chief Judges) - 19 from SDJC (73%), 6 from Jaguar Owners Club of LA (JOCLA) (23%), and 1 from Inland Empire Jaguar Club (IEJC) (4%).

• There were no formal protests. There were NO post-event score changes (Down from 3 the year prior and 4 in 2017 – that’s a great trend!). WELL DONE to the Scorekeeper team of Dawn, Diane and Jim!

Looking for a Few Good Women and Men for Concours Judges. Preparations are already in work for our 2020 Concours d’Elegance and we are looking for members interested in becoming Certified Concours Judges. We would like to grow our current list of 19 fully current SDJC Judges by three or more Judges by Concours day 2020. Please contact me by email (see below) if you are interested. I will be offering Concours Training classes again next May and June for those interested in learning more about JCNA Concours or becoming Judges.

If you have any questions about this article or JCNA Judge certification, please contact me by Email at: [email protected] or (619) 813-2005.

Strange Logic – Rock 6, Drivers 0 The photos below show two damaged wheels on the passenger side of our car due

to a large rock overrun while on HWY I-15 northbound, approaching Miramar Way. A basketball-sized chunk of sandstone lay in the Nr. 5 lane of the 7 lane

freeway. The collision occurred during the usual heavy, fast traffic outside rush hour. Two following vehicles hit the same rock and parked immobilized ahead of me on the right shoulder. CAL Highway Patrol stopped and said 3 more vehicles

were ahead on the left road margin after similar collision with the rock. Alloy wheel damage was not visible until the 2 wheels were removed from my vehicle.

After “thorough” investigation, the insurance company found the writer of this cautionary tale “at fault” with probable negative impact on future insurance rates. When asked how this was determined, the Claim Manager at the

insurance company responded “Well, we cannot blame the rock for being in the road, and blame must be placed, so it was your fault for neither braking nor swerving. We acknowledge you had a fraction of a second between the rock

becoming visible to you and the actual impacts. You could neither safely panic brake nor maneuver to avoid without risk of much greater damage or injury to

yourself and others, but that is irrelevant.” A brief wander through related Internet subjects appears to affirm this approach is not uncommon in California motor vehicle insurance practice.

Go figure!

Letters to the Editor

This month’s letter comes from our own Chief Judge Pete Rieth. It’s a “parable” based on a recent incident Pete had on I-15.

Thanks for the cautionary tale Pete. It sure looks like it could have even been a lot worse. If I had been the Highway Patrolman, I think I would have cited the rock for an unsafe lane Change. – Ed.

With the Election Luncheon coming up next month, Nedra thought it might be interesting to note the Club’s Election Dinner from November 1965, a short 54 years ago. Take a special note of those bolded items! (This is an excerpt from our club’s two-page October 1965 Newsletter.)

Reminder #1: Remember when going out of town to print out a copy of the cover page of the most recent “Jaguar Tracks” and take it with you. When you find a good setting just snap a picture of yourselves holding up the cover page with a nice view of the scene behind you. And if you’ve got your Jag in the shot, even better. Then all you need to do when you get home is email the picture to [email protected] along with a description of your location and I’ll do the rest to feature it in a “Where in the Word” article!

Reminder #2: Don’t forget about our “Getting to Know” feature! It’s intended to help all of us get to know each of you just a little bit better. Tell us about yourselves. Tell us how you became enamored with Jaguars, how you came to be part of our great club and anything else you’d like to share. Don’t be shy. If you don’t tell us about yourselves we’re just going to make stuff up.
