News From the Network of New York Clinical Special is ts in Ps y chia t ric-Men ta 1 Health Nursing and IOPN The Network The Network has been involved in a number of projects over the Fall and Winter. First, we have been talking with two other groups of advanced practice PMH nurses in Western New York state to see if we might combine to form one large, statewide organization.This new group would work to advance the causes of promoting state legslation favorable to our practice, obtain panel status in major MCO/HMOs, collaborate with other state pro- fessional groups, and sponsor CEU conferences. We have been working with the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the New York State Nurses Association to ensure that the new HCFA/Medicare regulations do not require physician supervision of advanced practice nurses. In collaboration with nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists, we have been working toward the develop- ment of legislation mandating third-party reimburse- ment of advanced practice nurses in New York state. We have scheduled a board meeting to be followed by a clinical presentation, at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY, on Sunday, April 26,1998, and we are all looking forward to the First Annual Nurse Psycho- therapist Conference in Baltimore on April 3-5, 1998. SeveralNetwork members will be presenting papers. Owing to declining active participation by members, we are assessing how we can better meet the needs of our membership. Nurse Psychotheyapists on the Move Elizabeth Carter, DPH, RN, has announced her retirement as Deputy Executive Director of the New York State Nurses Association. Dr. Carter, who received her Master's degree in psychiatric nursing from the Rutgers Graduate Program in Psychiatric Nursing and her doctorate from Columbia University School of Public Health, taught at Columbia University School of Nursing before assuming the position at NYSNA. Dr. Carter distinguished herself as an organiza- tional leader in ANA where she fought vigorously to advance the causes of psychiatric nursing nationwide. She chaired both the Division on Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice and the Council of Specialists in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, as well as serving as the ANA repre sentative on the Joint Committee on Interpersonal Affairs, an interdisciplinary group of mental health professionals. Phyllis Connolly, PhD, RN, CS, Professor, School of Nursing, San Jose State University, San Jose, CA, has assumed the presidency of the American PsychiatricNurses Association. Nancy Daniels, MN, RN, CS, retired Lt. Col. in the US Army, and former Director of the Stress Management Unit at Brooke Army Medical Center, has assumed the position of Director of Nursing and Clinical Specialist, Alamo Mental Health Group, San Antonio, Texas. Judith Haber, PhD, RN, CS, FAAN, has been named Director of the Master's and Post-Master's Certificate Programs at New York University, New York, NY. Jon McBnde, MSN, RN, has accepted a position as a Building Care Coordinator at the Philadelphia Geriatric Center, Philadelphia, PA. Jane Ryan, PhD, RN, nurse consultant in civil rights of public mental hospital patients, has been elected President-Elect of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.
