Putin To Return As Russian President

The Financial Times reports: “Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will return to his post as president next year after he and president Dmitry Medvedev announced they were switching jobs.

The announcement was made at the annual conference of United Russia, the hegemonic party that controls two-thirds of Russia’s parliament. It put to rest intrigue over Mr. Putin’s next move.

The announcement confirms the long-held impression that Mr. Medvedev was only ever a place holder for Mr. Putin, who was constitutionally prohibited from a third term after serving as president from 2000-2008.

Mr. Putin is now likely to win two consecutive 6 year terms, giving him a total of a quarter century in power from the time he took over the Kremlin in 2000. He remains Russia’s strongest political figure despite stepping aside for four years.

Mr. Putin started proceedings, telling delegates that Mr. Medvedev would succeed him in heading the United Russia party’s election list in December 4 parliamentary elections. Later, he suggested Mr. Medvedev’s candidacy for prime minister, which

Reuters reports: “Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he wants to bring ex-Soviet states into a ‘Eurasian Union’ in an article which outlined his first foreign policy initiative as he prepares to return to the Kremlin as the country’s next president.

Putin said the new union would build on an existing Customs Union with Belarus and Kazakhstan which from next year will remove all barriers to trade, capital and labor movement between the three countries.

‘We are not going to stop there and are setting an ambitious goal -- to achieve an even higher integration level in the Eurasian Union,’ Putin wrote in an article published in Izvestia newspaper on October 4.

The U.S. approach to developing its capability against missile threats in Europe is ‘unacceptable,’ the ministry said in a statement published on its website.

Russia ‘cannot but be alarmed because already in the first phase it’s leading to a substantial buildup of the U.S. anti- missile capability in Europe,’ the ministry said.

Spain is the fourth European nation agreeing to participate directly in the Europe-wide missile defense program, intended to protect against attacks from adversaries allegedly Russia, China and Iran. U.S. President Barack Obama pursued U.S. plans for the system in 2009, and the administration has obtained

agreements with Poland, Romania and Turkey to host elements of the shield.

ChristianToday.com reports: “The owner of a Christian café has been told by police to stop displaying ‘offensive’ Bible verses.

Police visited Jamie Murray, owner of the Salt & Light Coffee House in Blackpool following a complaint about ‘insulting’ and ‘homophobic’ material, according to The Christian Institute, which is advising Mr. Murray.

The café has a TV mounted on the wall that displays verses of the Bible from a set of DVDs called the Watchword Bible.

The DVDs provide audio and text of the entire New Testament but the volume is turned down in the café.

Police told Mr. Murray they had received a complaint about ‘insulting’ and ‘homophobic’ material being displayed in the café, although they did not tell him the specific texts relating to the complaint.

According to The Christian Institute, Mr. Murray was told to stop displaying the Bible verses because it breached Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which forbids the display of offensive or insulting words.

He said: ‘I couldn’t believe the police were saying I can’t display the Bible. The officers were not very polite; in fact they were quite aggressive. It felt like an interrogation…” (Jude 1:3, 4, 10, 14, 15.)

Condemned Pastor Won’t Renounce Faith

The Australian reports: “Britain’s Foreign Secretary and the Archbishop of Canterbury intervened to try to save a Christian pastor in Iran who has refused to renounce his faith to escape a death sentence.

An Iranian court gave Youcef Nadarkhani, 34, a third and final chance to avoid hanging, but he replied: ‘I am

resolute in my faith and Christianity and have no wish to recant.’

The panel of five judges will decide whether to confirm his execution for apostasy, Mohammed Ali Dadkhah, his lawyer, told The Times.

William Hague said that he ‘deplored’ Pastor Nadarkhani’s plight, and a senior Foreign and Commonwealth Office diplomat telephoned the Iranian Charge d’Affaires in London to protest.

‘This demonstrates the Iranian regime’s continued unwillingness to abide by its constitutional and international obligations to respect religious freedom,’ Mr. Hague said. ‘I pay tribute to the courage shown by Pastor Nadarkhani, who has no case to answer, and call on the Iranian authorities to overturn his sentence.’

Attorney Mohammad Ali Dadkhah told AFP that an Iranian court has decided to seek the opinion of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — the Islamic republic’s spiritual leader and highest authority — in the case of Youcef Nadarkhani, a 32-year-old pastor who was arrested in October 2009 and later sentenced to death for converting to Christianity.

Dadkhah and religious rights organizations say Nadarkhani is facing possible execution for apostasy and for refusing to renounce his religion, contradicting reports by Iran state media that have indicated Nadarkhani was found guilty of rape, extortion and security-related crimes. Messages seeking comment from Dadkhah were not immediately returned.

Girl’s School Expulsion For Blasphemy Alarms British

ChristianToday.com reports: “British Pakistani Christians have voiced dismay over the expulsion of a Christian girl from a school over blasphemy allegations.

Faryal Bhatti was accused of blasphemy by officials at Sir Syed Girls High School in Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) colony in Havelian, near Abbottabad.

The accusation was made after she misspelled a word in a class test on a poem praising the Prophet Muhammad.

She was reportedly beaten by her teacher over the mistake before the school took the decision to expel her.

A rally was held by local Muslims demanding that criminal charges be brought against Bhatti. At Friday prayers imams said her entire family should be punished.

The decision to expel her was taken by officials following a meeting with the girl and her mother in which Bhatti apologised and tried to explain that it had been a simple spelling mistake…

Coptic Church Torched in Egypt

ChristianToday.com reports: “A mob of several thousand Muslims from the village of Elmarinab in Edfu, Aswan province, demolished and torched St. George’s church, which was being renovated.

According to Mary Abdelmassih, writing for AINA — Assyrian International News Agency, the mob demolished the dome, walls and columns, after Friday prayers then went to the church depot where the lumber to be used for construction was stored and torched it. The fire lasted 2 hours, but the attack continued until 7 PM.

AINA says that in an interview on Coptic TV channel, Father Salib of St. George’s Church said: ‘The Imam of one of the village mosques called on the people to take matters in their own hands.’ Other witnesses named the Imam as Sheikh Sabry.

AINA reports that according to eyewitnesses, the Muslims also torched a large depot of electrical goods owned by a Coptic Christian, a supermarket and four Coptic homes. Muslims prevented the fire brigade from entering the village. Scientists Use Cloning To Make Human Stem Cells

Reuters reports: “U.S. scientists for the first time have used a cloning technique to get tailor-made embryonic stem cells to grow in unfertilized human egg cells, a landmark finding and a potential new flashpoint for opponents of stem cell research.

The researchers were trying to prove it is possible to use a cloning technology called somatic cell nuclear transfer, or SCNT, to make embryonic stem cells that match a patient’s DNA.

The achievement, published in the journal Nature, is significant because such patient-specific cells potentially can be transplanted to replace damaged cells in people with diabetes and other diseases without rejection by the immune system.

This technique could ignite new controversy because some opponents consider it to be cloning, which they fiercely oppose.

Iran Says Its New Cruise Missile Can ‘Sink Giant Warships’

Fox News reports: “Iran has begun to mass manufacture a domestically developed cruise missile that reportedly could be used to strike Israel and potentially counter U.S. naval presence in the Persian Gulf.

The missile, called Ghader, which means capable in Farsi, has a 124-mile

range and can ‘sink giant warships,’ Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, the Iranian defense minister, said in an interview on Press TV. He went on to say the missile could be launched quickly and travel at low altitudes.

The exact number of missiles produced is unclear, but they reportedly were delivered to the Revolutionary Guard’s naval division. The country often makes announcements about new advances in military technology that cannot be independently verified.

Vahidi called the manufacture of the missile a ‘great achievement’ and denied reports circulating that the missile was not produced in the country, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The Jerusalem Post reports: “Israel is a creation of the West so that it could exert control over the Middle East, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in his closing remarks to the ‘Intifada Conference’ in Tehran.

The establishment of Israel, he said, was the ‘most heinous historical crime,’ PressTV reported.

The Iranian president slammed what he described as a western intolerance for debate over the Jewish state’s existence.

Israel, he said, has become so sanctified in western capitals that ‘any criticism of the Zionist regime is tantamount to being a terrorist,’ according to PressTV.

‘The only sacred thing in Europe is the Zionist regime.’

Speaking at the conference Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rejected the Palestinians’ UN statehood bid, saying any deal that accepts

the existence of Israel would leave a ‘cancerous tumor’ forever threatening the security of the Middle East.

‘The two-state scheme, which has been clad in the self-righteousness of the acceptance of the Palestinian government and membership at the United Nations, is nothing but a capitulation to the demands of the Zionists or the recognition of the Zionist regime on Palestinian land,’ he declared…” (What an erroneous and misleading headline. Ahmadinejad: ‘Palestine Will One Day Be Liberated’

The Jerusalem Post reports: “Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he believes ‘Palestine will one day be liberated,’ saying the Iranian government believes it is the Palestinians’s right to

establish a state, speaking with university students in New York.

It would be better for the United States, he added, to ‘stop supporting the Zionist regime,’ the official Iranian IRNA news agency reported.

Entering dialogue with Israel, Ahmadinejad added, would not solve the Palestinians’s problems. He was referring to U.S. President Barack Obama’s speech at the United Nations in which he said that only negotiations could lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Israel itself, he claimed, was established ‘in a bid to extend dominance over the Middle East.’

Haaretz reports: “Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attacked Western powers for a catalogue of misdeeds, but his address to the United Nations failed to mention Tehran’s disputed nuclear program.

The U.S. delegation walked out when Ahmadinejad said ‘arrogant powers’ threatened anyone who questioned the Holocaust and the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States with sanctions and military action. Other Western delegations soon made their exit.

Ahmadinejad made only a passing reference to the Palestinian issue which has overshadowed this year’s UN General Assembly and did not comment on the Palestinian plan to ask the UN Security Council to recognize their nascent state.

He accused the United States of using the ‘mysterious’ Sept. 11, 2001, attacks as a pretext to launch wars on Iraq and Afghanistan. The United States and its

allies ‘view Zionism as a sacred notion and ideology,’ the Iranian leader said.

‘By using their imperialistic media network which is under the influence of colonialism they threaten anyone who questions the Holocaust and the Sept. 11 event with sanctions and military actions,’ he added…”

Al-Qaeda Slams Iran ‘Conspiracy Theories’

YnetNews.com reports: “It’s not often that the al-Qaeda terror organization stands by the United States, the ‘Great Satan’. The person who has managed to unite the two enemies in a joint goal is none other than Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has been spreading conspiracy theories on the 9/11 terror offensive.

The ABC network’s website reported that in the latest issue of the al-Qaeda English-language magazine ‘Inspire’, an author appears to take offense to the ‘ridiculous’ theory repeatedly spread by Ahmadinejad that the 9/11 attacks

were actually carried out by the U.S. government in order to provide a pretext to invade the Middle East.

According to the article, ‘The Iranian government has professed on the tongue of its president Ahmadinejad that it does not believe that al-Qaeda was behind 9/11, but rather the U.S. government. So we may ask the question: Why would Iran ascribe to such a ridiculous belief that stands in the face of all logic and evidence?’

The author admits that Iran was the first of the two to use the ‘Great Satan’ as a synonym for the U.S., but claims that the Islamic Republic sees itself as a rival for al-Qaeda when it comes to anti-Americanism and is jealous of the 9/11 attacks.

Haaretz reports: “The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians could be resolved if Jewish immigrants would return to their countries of origin, thus allowing Palestinian refugees to return

to theirs, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said.

Speaking at the sidelines of the International Conference on Palestine in Tehran, the Iranian president was quoted by AFP as saying that if ‘the backers of the Zionist regime want to solve the issue... the solution is simple ... everyone should go home.’

‘Some poor people were brought to Palestine on the promise of security and jobs while they made Palestinian people into refugees... So now Palestinians should go home and those brought here should go to theirs,’ Ahmadinejad was quoted by AFP.

Ahmadinejad was also quoted by the IRNA news agency earlier as questioning whether or not the Palestinian-Israeli conflict was in fact having to involve Western countries.

‘Is the Palestinian issue and Arab issue or a problem between the Arab nations on the one side and some western countries on the other side?’ the Iranian president asked, ‘or it is a problem between Arab nations on the one hand and some Jews who have occupied the Palestinian lands on the other.’…” (These last three reports are the words of an egomaniac like Hitler.)
