LETTERfrom the

PRESIDENT...If our clients can put up with a little noise and sawdust,

we can too! Stop by our showroom anytime and see

our two new displays.

We call one of the displays Country Club Classic, is

has cherry inset cabinets, granite countertops and

Wolf/Subzero appliances. The second is called

“Stone Manor” a beautiful kitchen nestled between

the stone columns of a previous display and featuring

Crystal’s walnut cabinets and Cambria Counter tops.

We will be unveiling our new displays at the “Cozy

in the Kitchen” charity event March 22. Please put it

on your calendar to stop by the newly remodeled

CKC showroom and enjoy the fun.

We are also excited about our Spring Remodelers

Showcase home. This is our second major project on

this home in a year’s time. In 2011 the lower level

won second place in the NKBA design contest and

was also featured in the Star Tribune. If you have an

older home and want to remodel while maintaining

its integrity, don’t miss seeing this home. It will be

open March 30 to April 1.

Lastly, I simply want to recognize the extraordinary

talents of our designers. I’m extremely proud of the

design awards they’ve won in the past two years.

While I’ve long known their talents, it’s nice to see

them recognized by others.

Have a great spring and I hope to see you at our events.

ASID SHOWCASE HOME

Open to public: May 19- June 10

Address: 2002 Lake of the Isles ParkwayMinneapolis, MN 55405

Come and see Mary’s natural touch to the powderbath, laundry room, coat room and back stairwayfor this year’s ASID Showcase House.

This small powder bathroom is rich in colors andmaterials and has many “green” elements. Thebeautifully handmade floor tiles are in a uniqueshape (2” x 10”) and are handmade, glazed andfired by North Prairie Tileworks, a local tile com-pany. Each tile is individual in both character andcolor. Complementing the floors is the natural sisalwall covering in rich copper, bronze and greentones. In addition to its beauty, this product is“breathable” to reduce the risk of mold and bacte-ria. Classically styled plumbing fixtures and acces-sories are finished in beautiful polished nickel.Illuminating the room, wall sconces, made fromrecycled materials in an oil-rubbed bronze finish, flank the wide framed mirror above the sink. All thepaint used on this project meets or exceeds stan-dards for LEED & Green Seal certification.

The coat room is located just off the kitchen andfront entry. It has a custom closet system, from alocal manufacturer, Twin City Closet Company and

includes coat hooks, hanging rods, open shelvesfor storage and a bench seat.

The back stairway was completely reconstructed, and a skylight was added to let natural light filterdown three floors. A combination of white andchocolate brown paint is used on the stairway spin-dles and treads. Wool was selected for the carpetrunner, because of its inherent qualities: a non-aller-genic, excellent insulator of temperature & sound, naturally soil resistant, flame retardant, non-slip andrecyclable. A whimsical star-shaped light fixturesparkles from the third floor ceiling.

Original to the home was a beautiful stained glasswindow. The homeowners wanted to reuse it andsince the Laundry Room had no exterior window, itwas a perfect. Natural light from the skylight abovethe back stairway filters through it and illuminatesthe laundry room. What was an otherwise mun-dane space now showcases a beautiful art piece. The room also features one of Cambria’s newestcounter top colors, Parys. The rich blue and graytones are seen again in the blue wall paint and thestainless steel sink & faucet finish. Twin City ClosetCompany provided cabinetry for this small spacemaking the most of every square inch.

TRENDS in KITCHENS LARGE OPEN SPACESDesigner: Val Stuessi, CKD

A not-so-new but persistent trend in our remodeling proj-ects is removing walls to open up the kitchen to living anddining spaces. The home of Harold and Suzanne Nelsonof Hugo, MN is an example.

As the design with CKC’s Val Stuessi, CKD, progressed,it became clear that the best plan would be to switch thekitchen to the front of the house and situate the livingroom to the back. The beautiful woods bordering theirback and side yard is the view they wanted to look outupon. By eliminating front windows and adding largewindows on the side and back walls, they have a viewof the whole living space and their yard as well. Thissolution was facilitated by completely removing the wallthat divided the vaulted living space.

Now Suzanne enjoys her love of cooking, baking andcanning more than ever in the large sociable kitchen. Weincorporated a walk-in pantry and a 3-tier island into the

L-shape kitchen design. Lighted display storage for herteapot collection, several sets of dishes, and many cook-books was a priority. The handmade, cherry table top atone end of the island is used for everyday dining. There’sa wall-hung flat screen TV right next to the pantry andHarold’s stereo system is in the cabinetry on the back sideof the island.

Walk in the front door of the split level home and beforeyou is a bright, open space with light oak floors through-out. Comfortable seating, a large dining table, a fullview of the kitchen’s natural cherry cabinetry, GoldenBeach granite, a crackled subway tile backsplash with anonyx accent stripe, present the warm welcome of thishome. The Nelson family reports that they love howeverybody can be together even while the meal is beingprepared. “With Val’s design guidance and Jolynn’s proj-ect coordination the end result is a beautiful, functionalkitchen. The timeline was realistic and the crews kept tothe schedule and minimized disruptions.” •

The designer, Carol Kornak, took special care to keep the 1930’s look andcharm. A special cutout design in door panels and furniture toe resemblescabinet details found in kitchens of that era. Anne pointed out, “As I talked,Carol listened to what worked in the past and what I hope to achieve in thefuture. When Carol came back to me with her recommendations, theimprovements were everything I’ve dreamed of, including an island, whichis absolutely wonderful.”

The lower level has a new egress window that floods the room with day-light. The stone in the window well matches the fireplace. “It’s all in thedetail,” says Anne. New alder cabinets, stained to match the existing woodpaneling, line three walls for bookcases, entertainment center and homeoffice. “Carol and Jolynn transformed the space I used every day in mylower level—space that was, quite frankly, barely organized chaos. Nowthat same space is an office and entertainment center that is beautiful, func-tional, pleasant, and light filled.”

Come to this Remodelers Showcase and see why Anne Jones says, “I can’tbelieve I waited this long to make a change. Design, function and light addso much pleasure to living in my home that I can’t wait to get up each dayand see my beautiful new kitchen in the morning light.” •
