(TOLEDO, OH) A.A. Boos & Sons, a Toledo-based General Contractor, has provided the foun-dation and internal structure for the new Art Tatum Celebration Column, due to be installed in the plaza of Toledo’s new indoor arena in early September of this year.

The foundation itself is an eight-foot-by-eight-foot square of concrete and reinforced steel that extends three feet below pavement level. Anchor bolts in the center of the foundation allowed for the precise installation of the massive central sup-port pier, a 27-foot tall structural steel column fabricated by A.A. Boos. Electrical connections for both pavement-level and internal LED illumi-nation complete the support facilities for the sculpture, which is due to arrive in Toledo in late August before installation a few days later.

The center support column is lowered onto the founda-tion in front of the Toledo’s new arena.

When approached by the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo and by Lathrop Corporation, Gen-eral Contractor for the Arena project, A.A. Boos decided to donate the concrete foundation as their contribution to the Art Tatum Celebration Col-umn.

“ We’re thrilled to have A.A. Boos’ participation in this project,” said Adam Russell, the Arts Commission’s coordinator of the Art in Public Places Program, “They have an excellent reputa-tion for quality work and are showing a lot of community spirit with their generous donation.”

A.A. Boos’ Project Manager Chip Hutchings has been in touch with sculptor Cork Marcheschi since late April. Hutchings noted the sculptor’s international reputation as well as his varied background as a west coast musician, teacher and composer:

“I’m a jazz fan and an artist myself, and it’s a rare treat to be able to mix the personal and the profes-sional parts of my life in this project,” said Hutch-ings. “A.A. Boos & Sons is proud to be a part of this unique memorial to one of Toledo’s most fa-mous musicians.”

A.A. Boos is a 63-year old General Contracting company based in Toledo, Ohio. The firm’s 150 field employees and operating engineers offer a wide range of contracting services to industrial, commercial and institutional customers, as well as facilities maintenance throughout the Midwest.

The Art Tatum Celebration Column is a part the City of Toledo’s One Percent for Art Program. This artwork is administered by the Arts Commis-sion of Greater Toledo.
