Appli- cation for sponsorship should be made as early as possible (certainly not less than nine months before the conference date) to the EPS Secretariat in Geneva. SponsorshipCriteria

Conference organizers are reminded that the EPS offers sponsorship to those conferences held on the territory of a country which is the seat of an EPS member society, that are judged by the EPS Conference Committee :1 ) to satisfy a genuine need and to be

meetings at which new material will be presented ;

Europhysics Conference AbstractsNumber 6 in the Europhysics Conference

Abstracts Series will contain nine volumes, the first of which appears this month and covers the 2nd General Conference of the Condensed Matter Division — the only published record of the Conference. All EPS organized conferences in 1982 are included in the Series with the exception of the 5th International Conference on Surface Science (ECOSS) for which no abstracts are being produced.

Subscription price for institutions for Series 6 (volumes A-l) is Sw.Frs. 290. — , reduced to Sw.Frs. 250.— for subscribers to previous Series.

Physicists in Europe and in the USA are beginning to appreciate the value of this running summary of the most important developments in physics. No single person can follow the whole of the literature in physics and no library can afford to subscribe to all publications that can contain valuable information. Even the collected abstracts and the references accumulated on data bases have become so voluminous

that further selection is needed to make the material manageable.

In the Europhysics Conference Abstracts Series, physicists benefit from the intensive examination of each field that has been undertaken by the international teams set up by the various Divisions of the European Physical Society. These are not only representative of the most dynamic sections of physics research, but their geographical spread ensures that the best research over the whole of Europe is considered. Moreover, as the abstracts in the ECA Series are designed to be informative rather than simply indicative, the reader can have a unique overview of what is going on in physics while the specialist has immediate access to the recent highlights in his field.

By eliminating the need for fringe journals, subscribing to Europhysics Conference Abstracts can save your library money in these difficult financial times. This should be done through the EPS Secretariat.

The Institute for Nuclear- and High-Energy Physics, NIKHEF division K, Amsterdam,

invites applications for a tenured position asSENIOR NUCLEAR PHYSICIST (PhD)

The Institute has recently started the experimental programme, with its 500 MeV, high duty factor linear electron accelerator.The principal aspects of this programme involve :

- single-arm electron scattering experiments with a high resolution QDD spectrometer

- single-arm experiments in which electron-induced reaction products are detected with a large-solid angle QDQ spectrometer and

- coincidence-experiments with both spectrometers.The present position initially is meant to extend research staff responsible both for the scientific programme of the in-house electron scattering group (6 seniors, 4 graduate and 10 undergraduate students) and for the support of outside user programmes.Applicants must have experience in the field of experimental nuclear physics, preferably in electron scattering and/or photonuclear research.Further information can be obtained from : prof. dr. C. de Vries (Telephone (020) 59 2 21 42).Written applications including a career résumé and the names of three referees should be sent within four weeks after appearance of this advertisement to : NIKHEF, Personnel Department,

P.O. Box 41882,NL-1009 DB Amsterdam.

Europhysics News is the official journal of the European Physical Society which comprises 28 National Societies, Academies and Groups, over 3000 Individual Members and 32 Associate Members. Governing bodies of EPS are the General Meeting, Council and an elected Executive Committee responsible for detailed policy. EPS promotes the collaboration of physicists throughout Europe and encourages all aspects of international exchange in physics. EPS administers scholarships awarded for research and studies in different countries and a "teaching abroad" scheme. EPS publishes in addition to EN, Europhysics Conference Abstracts, E. Ed. News and, in collaboration with The Institute of Physics (UK), the European Journal of Physics. Individual Members receive EN free of charge (price to institutions : Sw.Fr. 82. — / a), rebates on the price of many publications and on conference fees. Annual subscription to EPS from Individual Members who belong to one of the EPS member societies is: Sw. Fr. 36. — ; for independent members : Sw.Fr. 126. — .
