EDITORS CORNER
THE BIRD WORD publication is issued near the middle of the EVEN-numbered month by The Smoky Mountain Classic
Thunderbird Club. Send articles and items of interest to the Editor, Bill Long, at the email address on the front page.
The Bird Word would like to welcome all these new members who joined in 2016: Randy Moats (3-16); Bob and Lin Helsel (4-16);
James and Charla Norgaard (5-16); Will and Linda Cook (5-16}; David and Charlotte Tinnon (5-16); Marvin and Jan Hill (6-15); Da-
vid and Carol Anderson (7-16); Eddie and Linda Dunlap (10-16); Randy and Gail Cagle (10-16); and Rusty and Denise Kean (11-16).
As the year winds down, it’s hard to remember all the events we had in 2016. We closed the year with the Fall Color and winery
tour hosted by the Bly’s, followed by the Oak Ridge parade and our annual Christmas party at the Rawe’s. At the Veteran’s Day
parade on November 11, of course, we had 16 classic Thunderbirds, 2 Retro’s and 1 Ford truck in our
display. The TV announcers invented many new names for the colors or our cars! It was a beautiful
fall day in East Tennessee.
Our event calendar for 2017 is filling up, but we have openings in the early part of the year. If there is
something that you would like to plan, please contact Grace Phillips. She can help you with the plan-
ning. On that note, please mark your calendars for May 19-21, for MockingBird Run IX (yes number
9!). Charlie Hensley and Kathy Fahey are chairing this year’s event. It will take place in Tullahoma Tn.
Where is Tullahoma, TN? Very close to Lynchburg TN. Guess who is located in Lynchburg. So if you
haven’t figured it out yet, our focal point for MockingBird Run IX is “The Jack Daniels Distillery”. Space
is limited, so please register shortly after you receive your information in January.
At our November meeting, we had our annual board elections. We had only one position expiring this
year. That was the At-Large Director position held by Perry Anthony. Perry decided not to run again if
we could find a candidate who had not served on the board before. Well, Charlie Hensley did step for-
ward and was unanimously elected. Congratulations Charlie. Also, Bev Hammond will coordinate the Saturday “No Meeting”
breakfasts, and take that over from Perry also. Thank you Bev. On behalf of all our members, I want to thank Perry for his
years of leadership on the board, countless hours involved on event planning, and his vision for our club and his prodding along
the way. Perry is not going away, just taking a breather to get ready for our next big challenge.
Speaking of the next big challenge, if you haven’t heard, SMCTC has been approved by CTCI to host the 2018 International Con-
vention. It will take place in August, 2018 in Knoxville. Bill Long has championed our cause, supported by many of you. Stay
tuned for more on this from Bill, who will be our convention chairman.
Finally in closing, I want to say thanks to all of you who supported our club this past year and to those of you who helped me
along the way. Let us also remember this holiday season and the families who have had their lives altered due the Gatlinburg
fires.

Fall Color and Winery Tour Hosted and reported by Bob and Ann Bly
October brought great weather and an opportune time for a fall drive to several area wineries on Sunday, October 23, 2016.
Eight cars made the sojourn to four wineries, starting with the Wineries at Seven Springs Farm. The owners were celebrating
their first year of operation, and treated us to samples of 12 wines. Fortunately,
they had set up a tent and served lots of snacks so we could continue to the
next stop. They videotaped our departure and our classic cars can be seen on
their website. (Look at their Facebook page on October 23.)
Lunch was provided at Spout Springs Estates (Blaine, TN), which has a magnifi-
cent view of the Smoky Mountains. Along with the wines, we enjoyed soup and
sandwiches and watching the grape pressing process (No, Bob did not take his
shoes off to help, contrary to rumors).
Dessert was served at Goodwater Wineries. The owner’s wife is a culinary chef,
and we had her delicious baked apples while he told us about their wines and
history of their winery.
The final leg of our trip took us to the Eagle Springs Winery. Although we ar-
rived just before closing time, they made sure we sampled all their wines and
had the opportunity to explore their gift shop.
It was the first road trip for Will and Linda Cook who just had gotten their car
roadworthy. Also, on their first trip with the SMCTC were David and Carol An-
derson. Others making the trip were Bob and Sylvia Witt, Bud and Phyl Morello,
Bill and Sharon Jurkonie, Beverly and Richard Hammonds and Bob and Ann Bly.
The wineries are eager to have us return as they enjoyed having the cars at
their establishments and the drivers and passengers as purchasers of many
bottles of wine.

Knoxville Veterans Day Parade
Hosted by Dorian Abernathy
This year’s Knoxville Veterans Day Parade was the most enthusiastic one that we have seen. The election had just passed and
many were feeling patriotic (and glad it was finally over!). Kids and parents were several rows deep all along Gay Street. Most
were waving flags and verbally thanking every veteran for their service. The Smoky Mountain Chapter had the largest contingent
we have every had with sixteen early classics, two modern classics and one of America’s favorite ride, a Ford pickup! As always,
the event is recorded on local TV . This year’s coverage spent a longer than normal time dedicated to our rides. It was due in no
small part to the appearance of Super Hero—Captain American riding right in the middle of Peggy and Jerry Cardwell’s Dusk Rose
1957. He also goes by the name of Mason and he was the star of the show. The local newspaper also did a sizeable write-up on
the event and Mason got his share of coverage there also. The other feature of the article was the very descriptive, and non-
Ford sounding, version of the names for our colors.
Below is the list of Veterans that are a part of our Smoky Mountain Classic Thunderbird Club.
Thank them for their service.

“No Meeting” Breakfast - December 3, 2016 It was a brisk Saturday morning, but that didn't stop our hungry members from gathering at the Airport Hilton today. Approximately 30 people attended this " no meeting " gathering where we enjoyed good food, good conversation and lots of laughter. Given the circumstances of the Gatlinburg fires, we conducted a few minutes of business where our club decided to take up a collection for the victims of the fires. The club donated $250 and thanks to the generosity of our members, we brought that amount to a $1000 donation to the Red Cross with a passing of a hat. The Hilton manager chose new club Director, Charley Hensley's "pea green" car as her favorite. Congrats Charlie for winning a free breakfast! Please join us for a "no meeting" breakfast. we meet the first Saturday of the even- numbered months. Thanks, Jeannie Terry

TOWNSEND CHRISTMAS PARADE: December 2016
NOTE: The Townsend Parade had to be postponed this year due to the tragedy in the Smokies and the new date could not be accommodated by our club. We decided to focus on the Oak Ridge Parade this year.
Everybody loves a Parade!
The Oak Ridge Christmas Parade and the light meal afterwards was enjoyed by 10 club members and combined six classic Thun-derbirds. All went off this year without a single problem or ‘adventures’ experienced last year. The Smoky Mountain Classic Thunderbird Club was number 45 of 121 entries; but, we only waited about 20 minutes after the front of the parade began mov-ing before we moved. Parade marshals and local police officers kept everything moving and everyone had a great time. Kathy Fahey provided hot chocolate, hot apple cider, and home-made Christmas cookies for Club members...and anyone else who happened by...during our line-up preparations. Jeanie and Doug Terry provided surprise gifts for participants through a ticket-drawing. Thank you Doug for shaking down those suppliers The Mayor of Oak Ridge, Warren Gooch, came by and visited with us during the line-up along with several other parade group participants. The parade was very well attended by the citizens of Oak Ridge and surrounding areas. The streets were lined with happy viewers for the entire length. Per Charlie H, the parade was the most attended that he could remember. The parade covers about 1.2 miles from Corporate Center on Lafayette Avenue to the Chamber of Commerce/Oak Ridge High School Parking areas located on the Oak Ridge Turnpike. After the parade, we caravanned about one mile to "The Other One", a retro-restaurant located in an original Manhattan Project building in Grove Center. The historic shopping center was part of the original Oak Ridge facilities constructed during WWII. Memorabilia decorates the walls of the restaurant. Service was fast and efficient and we enjoyed conversation and fellowship until our meal was complete.
Rhinestone Cowboy, and Green Power Ad-
vocate, Charlie, was wired for the night.
Remember to send any
updates to your phone
or email to Ann Bly.

Christmas Party by Rick Rawe
Nine is enough!! Friday, December 9, was the 9th annual club Christmas Party at the Rawe’s. There were 41 people in attendance for food, libations, a car tour (Rick showed off his newly acquired ’56 Corvette), and, of course, the always hi-lite of the evening - the Chinese auction of both nice and silly gifts. Perry Anthony received a special T-shirt to commemorate our visit to
Perry’s Cafe while at the CTCI convention in San Die-go. Doug Terry also received a special ball cap (description unprintable here!) from the Tennessee Hills distillery in Jonesborough. Houston brought his famous grape salad and 17 year old granddaughter, Kate, who is determined to own a ’65 Mustang in the near future. Would guess that granddad Houston will make that happen! Sadly missed this year were Martha Jane Whitaker and Dottie Ratledge who were dearly loved by all of us. While they are gone, we will continue to celebrate them at future Christmas parties, but just not at the Rawe’s. Nine is enough for us, but #10 will be held at the Norgaards in Tellico Village.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

If you want to tell your Thunderbird story and have it appear here, write it up and send it along with a good picture of you and your car to the editor. If you don’t care to test your story telling ability, just reply to an earlier e-mail questionnaire that was sent by the editor. If you don’t still have that email, drop the editor a note and he will resend it to you.
ob was bitten by the Thunderbird bug in 1987 when they lived in Indiana where he purchased a 1963 Ford
Thunderbird. He joined CTCI that year. It wasn’t Ann’s favorite car, but they brought it with them when they
moved to Tennessee in 1990. It received a nearly-free restoration from a former Canadian race car driver
who just loved working on cars. Bob purchased his Fiesta Red 1956 Bird in 1997 and sold the 1963 Bird at
auction, much to Ann’s delight.
Ann had taken a job in Nashville, and Bob drove his
car to an automobile restoration company in Leba-
non, TN. He figured he could monitor the progress of
its repair when he drove to Nashville on alternating
weekends. After thousands of dollars and no pro-
gress on fixing the car, he, Bill Long and Perry Antho-
ny hauled it back to Knoxville. Some of its parts were
in boxes. After another ‘big pile’ of money spent on
its restoration, it was finally drivable. Along the way,
many members of the club, most notably Rick Rawe,
have helped keep it drivable. Jeanne Terry gave Bob
an Italian good-luck charm which seems to have
helped. Bob’s car has won CTCI Concours Silver,
Gold, upgraded to Senior Status and First place in
Senior Touring. It also won Dealer’s Choice at the
Fabulous Fords Forever show in Manchester, TN.
Bob and Ann are charter members of the Smoky Mountain Classic Thunderbird Club. Bob drafted the Bylaws and set it up as a
non-profit private club. He has served on the board as a director and officer. They have attended multiple CTCI Regional and
International Conventions since the inception of SMCTC and have enjoyed the many friendships they have made along the
way. Bob enjoys judging and Ann enjoys sightseeing and shopping while on their various trips. Bob continues his law practice
in Knoxville and Ann is a retired RN. They reside in Tellico Village with their dog, Bogey.

As passed by your Board, the ROADWORTHY PROPRAM has launched. If you have a Thunder-bird [ classic] and are a member of the Smoky Mountain Classic Thunderbird Club in good standing, you can make contact with either Rick Rawe, [ 865 599 9350 / [email protected] ] - Knoxville or Perry Anthony, [ 865 360 7724 / [email protected] ] - Greenback. Then you can make arrangements to have your classic T-Bird checked for safety-related issues at NO COST. You will receive a short report of items that appear defective and you can then make arrangements to have them corrected if you so choose.
The intent of the ROADWORTHY PROGRAM is to provide resources for members who have a classic Thunderbird [ ’55-‘57] and would like to have their T-Bird put through a “check list” process to determine areas that might need repair. The “inspection team” does not do mechanical repairs as those services should be obtained independently. The Roadworthy Program is NOT a restoration or repair service. The program will require that you make arrangements with one of the “inspectors” and then require your T-Bird to be brought to one of the locations listed above. Should your T-Bird be inoperable, please let the “inspectors” know as on-site inspections may be possible.
Introducing the ROADWORTHY PROGRAM
Many of us watched Dolly Parton, everybody in East Tennessee’s favorite
girlfriend, in her Christmas movie recently. We could not help but notice
that she chose a red 1956 Thunderbird as her car of choice for the charac-
ter she played. It figured prominently in the movie which was shot in neigh-
boring Georgia. Turns out the owner’s car was on the cover of The Early
Bird back in 2015. We will try to get him, —and Dolly, to make an appear-
ance in “Thunder ‘n Lightnin’ in the Smokies” in 2018. Wish us luck!
Mark your long range calendars for
August 15-19, 2018 for
“Thunder ‘n Lightnin’ in the Smokies” —
A CTCI International Convention.
Many more details will be forth coming.
The Club is counting on
you to play a role for this
important event in the
life of our Club.
