Iam a mom of three children who at-

tend Brookhaven Elementary Schoolin Placentia. It is Monday morning

and I am “recouping” from our busyweekend that not only included Scout-ing campouts and soccer games, but at-tendance at a very important and an-nual event for us: The Great StridesWalk for Cystic Fibrosis.

You see, two of my three childrenhave classmates and friends who sufferfrom Cystic Fibrosis. Joshua Garberg isa fourth grader who loves to performhip hop, act in plays and sing. He was“Young Hercules” in our last school pro-duction and danced hip hop in theschool variety show with my son, Tan-ner, last year.

Lukas is Joshua’s younger brother. He is a first grader … small but mighty.Lukas is loved by all – there is a bigheart in that small body of his. He lovesart, playing baseball and being a com-plete ham.

Lukas was the first to be diagnosedwith CF at age 2 when he was unable to

gain weight. Big brothers Joshua andJakob were also tested. Jakob (who is aseventh grader at Tuffree MiddleSchool) had a negative test result. How-ever, Joshua’s test results for CF werepositive. And so began the fight forJoshua and Lukas by two very incred-ible and dedicated parents – Kristenand Chris Garberg.

This was our third year participatingin The Great Strides Walk. Our family –along with 210 members of “The Gar-berg Force” (more than half of themBrookhaven families) – walked for threemiles around East Lake Village to showour support and raise money for re-search to help fight a disease that af-fects two young boys we adore. Nearly$12,000 was raised at this year’s eventand. Thankfully, Josh and Luke arethriving … thanks to their parents, thanks to modern medicine and thanksto the support of an incredible group offamily and friends.

But the story does not end there. There is yet another young fourth-gradeboy at Brookhaven. His name is HaydenBreneman. He suffers from a rare formof leukemia that has been in remissionfor the past seven years. He did notshow any signs that the Leukemia hadreturned until testing revealed it just afew weeks ago. Hayden is currently un-dergoing chemotherapy and will need abone marrow transplant in the weeks tocome.

    Hayden was diagnosed with Leuke-

mia at 18 months of age. He is a sweet, active boy who loves to play soccer. Healso has two brothers. Wyatt is a fifthgrader at Brookhaven and Dylan is aneighth grader Bernardo Yorba MiddleSchool.

Hayden will not be at school for theremainder of the year – he will not getto hang out with his friends on the play-ground or kick the ball on the soccerfield. There is hope for Hayden, howev-er, and that is what this is all about.

Hayden’s parents, Matt and Robin, are dedicated and loving parents whoare doing all that they can to fight fortheir son – not leaving his side and al-lowing his story to be told. In fact, bothof them just took leaves of absence fromtheir jobs so that they would not miss a

minute of being with their son duringthese grueling weeks ahead.

Recently, a group of Brookhavenmoms lead by Tiffany Milby organized a“Hope for Hayden” event. They set up atable just outside the school, displayedposters with Hayden’s photo and storyand sold wristbands for a suggested do-nation of $5 to help with Hayden’s med-ical expenses. The response was over-whelming – teachers, parents and stu-dents all wanted to help Hayden, andhelp Hayden they did. With generousdonations, the bracelets were sold out inless than an hour with a waiting list forpeople wanting more.

If you would like to learn more aboutJoshua and Lukas Garberg or make adonation to The Garberg Force, visithttp://thegarbergforce.shutterfly.com.

Hope for Hayden bracelets will againbe available at 2 p.m. Friday in front ofBrookhaven School, 1851 N. BrookhavenAve. Visit www.carepages.com/carepages/HaydenLovesSoccer for more informationabout Hayden.

The East Lake Villagecommunity associationpartnered up with the

Cystic Fibrosis foundation tohost “a walk for cystic fibrosis”to help raise awareness andmoney for research on April30.

The event was held at theEast Lake Village CommunityCenter in Yorba Linda. Theevent started with a walk at 8a.m. around the lake that sur-rounds East Lake Village andwent on all day ending with asurfboard raffle, activities andgames.

Families and friends from allover the community came in 18different teams to show sup-port. More than 2,000 peopleturned out for the walk andwere encouraged by the Espe-ranza High School band andYorba Linda High School cheer-leading squad.

“This is real-life stuff. Theseare real people with real sick-nesses and when people comeout on a busy Saturday to showtheir support, it makes a differ-ence,” said Megan Poulsen, whohas been a volunteer for thisevent for six years.

    Families and friends were

brought to tears when it wasannounced later that afternoonthat the event raised over$85,000 for research.

“I truly believe we can find acure,” said Rob Montelone, avolunteer and coordinator ofthe event. Rob and his wifePaulette have five kids, three ofwhich who have cystic fibrosis.

The Montelones are an ex-ample of just one family thatwas affected, by the disease.Karina Toriz, a local resident, was there in remembrance ofher close friend who passedaway from the disease last year.

“This is my second year com-ing. I think it’s important toraise awareness. This event hasbeen very emotional for all ofus.” Bridget Blehm, a managerfor East Lake Village, was a co-chair of the event.

“Our main focus was to raisemoney and awareness and wedid just that.”

The event began at a smallpark in Placentia in 2005.

“Parents like me have twochoices, we can sit on the side-lines and just accept our sit-uation or we can get involvedand be an agent for finding acure,” Montelone said.

“What touches me most isthe love and support of thecommunity.”
