Extremely Sever Cyclone FANI devastated

11 districts of the state affecting over 40 per-

cent of total state population. The death toll

rises to 50 as per the media reports, how-

ever, the state government acknowledges 29.

A large number of cattle are lost and the

heavy wind and rain damaged the kharif

crop, vegetable cultivation and cash crops

too. The internal road blockades still is a

major challenge to fasten the relief and reha-

bilitation operations. The devastating cy-

clone has shaken the backbone of coastal

Odisha and killed the hope and dreams of

people in rural as well as urban slums.

• Death toll rises to 50, however, govern-

ment sources reported 29 life claims;

• 5244 primary, 547 upper primary, 180

high schools and 1031 public health in-

stitutions were damaged;

• One lac 56 thousand of electric poles are

damaged in the state as per the primary

assessment;

• Scarcity of water and food are still ma-

jor challenges in the rural and urban

slums after 72 hours of FANI;

• Thousand hectors of Kharip crop, Rub-

ber plantation, ground nuts, betel field,

coconut garden and vegetables are lost

affecting over lacs of farmers;

• Though the national and state high

ways are cleared for communication

but internal road blockade is still a

challenge for relief operation;

• Administration can’t able to reach all

the affected rural areas after 72 hours

due to road blockade;

• Electricity, water supply and food scar-

city are major challenges in the worst

affected villages and urban slums in

Khordha and Puri districts;

• Damage assessments are yet to be done;

• Heavy loss of cattle, crop, household

daily needs worsen the situation;

• Fear of break out of epidemics due to

heavy animal loss and waste disposal;

Official Updates • As per Special Relief Commissioner, Od-

isha 19 number of 132 KV towers, two

400 KV towers, 200 number of 33/11 KV

HT poles, 10000 numbers of 11/0.4 elec-

tric transformers and a large number of HT

line were damaged due to the cyclone. 29

lakh consumers of CESU are affected with

supply of electricity.

• The State Government announced the re-

habilitation package for the cyclone vic-

tims. The beneficiaries will get Rs 95100

for fully damaged houses under rural hous-

ing schemes. Similarly the families having

partially damaged houses will get Rs 5200

and Rs 3200 for nominal repair

• The affected families in Puri and Khorda

districts will get Rs 50 Kg rice, Rs 2000/-

and a polythene each.

• The affected families in Jagatsinghpur,

Kendrapara and Cuttack will get Rs 5000/-

per household.

• Additional one month pension to the bene-

ficiaries in the affected areas under Social

Security Scheme.

Critical Deficits • Scarcity of water for drinking and other

purposes

• Devastation of power structure af-

fected supply of electricity: darkness

all around

• Housing: affected people are taking

shelter in the open air.

• Women, children, elderly people and

People with Disabilities are the most

vulnerable groups.

• Food provided through community

shelters/ kitchen is not sufficient.

ban Slums and rural areas of Puri,

Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada

• Identification of the most vulnerable peo-

ple especially the women

• Temporary Shelter for the damaged

households

• Supply of drinking water in Bhubanes-

war Urban Slums

• Mobilization of Survival Kit for the most

affected households, Dignity Kit for the

women.

• Decontamination of polluted water bod-

ies.
