Annual New Parent Event

This week, The Dulwich

Picture Gallery held their

annual new parent

event, where a number of

parents and students from

our New Year 7 cohort

were invited to attend.

Many parents went along

and thoroughly enjoyed

this special access to the permanent collection,

the view of the Tove Jansson exhibition and the

talk from Sackler Director, Jennifer Scott and the

Chair of the Friends of DPG, Ian McInnes.

Last Wednesday, Mr Frank Funnell, an education

outreach officer from Prospects Service delivered

a presentation on “How to acquire work

experience from the City firms” to our Year 12

students. Drawing on 30 years of experience of

working in the City, Mr Funnell discussed a range

of matters, such as the value of networking and

how to put together a winning CV. The students

clearly valued Mr Funnell’s input, using the

opportunity to make valuable links with someone

who has unique access to the Square Mile.

Options after A Levels - Apprenticeships

This week, our Sixth Form students learnt more

about apprenticeships from talks by Kingsdale

alumni - Paige Thomas, who is pursuing her Level

6 apprenticeship qualification with 'Transport for

London', and Sadie Thomas, also working

towards her Level 6 apprenticeship with KPMG.

The speakers informed the students about this

higher education route offering guidance on what

this option entails and how to apply. For further

information on apprenticeships, students are

advised to contact Mrs Chaudhary.

Mr. Bahmani, Head of House

for Swift has submitted the

following French poem.

Un sourire.

Recueil : Le Livre d'amour (1920)

Raoul Follereau

(1903-1977)

Translation:

A smile costs nothing and produces a lot,

It enriches the one who receives it without

impoverishing the one who gives it,

It only lasts a moment, but its memory is

sometimes eternal,

Nobody is rich enough to do without it,

Nobody is poor enough to not deserve it,

It creates happiness at home, supports business,

It is the sensible sign of friendship,

A smile gives rest to the tired being,

Give courage to the most discouraged

It cannot be bought, nor be lent, nor be stolen,

For it is a thing that has value only from the

moment it is given.

And if, however, you meet someone who does

not know how to smile,

Be generous give him yours,

Because no one needs a smile as much

As the one who can not give it to others.

House News House Poetry Week

This week as part of our House Poetry Week, we are

asking staff and students to submit a poem of their

choice for display on our classroom doors. This is

to help raise the spiritual appreciation and

understanding of how words can provoke and inspire

positive feelings of joy and happiness.

We are asking our parents and carers to also get

involved by sending us one of their favourite poems

to publish in next week’s Parental Bulletin. Please

email: [email protected]

Caged Bird

The free bird leaps

on the back of the wind

and floats downstream

till the current ends

and dips his wings

in the orange sun rays

and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks

down his narrow cage

can seldom see through

his bars of rage

his wings are clipped and

his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with fearful trill

of the things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

for the caged bird

sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze

and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees

and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn

and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream

his wings are clipped and his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill

of things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

for the caged bird

sings of freedom.
