Super Sewer: Greg Hands discovers 29,000lorries to use King's Roadand New Kings Road

Greg Hands M.P. has discovered plans by Thames Water to route upto 29,000 lorries along New Kings Road and Wandsworth Bridge

Road during construction of the Super Sewer.Should construction go ahead at Carnwath Road in Fulham, a vastnumber of lorry movements will be required, producing six years oftraffic misery. Lorry trips would average 31 per day for two yearsduring main tunnelling and peak at 33 per day when the tunnel isbeing lined.Thames Water plan to move all plant and construction materials byroad to reduce costs. Only excavated spoil will be taken by barge, despite the existence of the wharf being given as one of their keyreasons for using Carnwath Road. Although its transport strategy

paper suggests it would be possible for nearly half of the remainingmaterial to go by barge, it will give the contractor the flexibility todetermine the most practical and cost-effective means of transportingother materials and equipment. The route itself is revealed in supplementary document about theCarnwath Road site, which marks the preferred lorry access to TfLroad networkon a map. It would see large trucks thundering throughChelsea and down into Fulham, directly past the windows of residentshouses. The lorries will be used to take machinery (such as cranes andexcavators), precast concrete segments for the tunnel wall, ready-

mixed concrete, and aggregates like gravel. No assessment has beenmade by Thames Water of the impact on congestion.Commenting, Greg Hands M.P. said: This route would bring trafficmisery. We already knew that parts of Fulham would be affected, butnot on this scale. Both Fulham and Chelsea could see gridlock, aswell as noise and other disruption. It is completely unacceptable for Thames Water to put thousands oflorries through residential areas particularly when barges are anoption. It was Thames Waters choice to put the main tunnelling shaft in theheart of a residential area, when more remote sites were available. The impact of Thames Waters Super Sewer will be felt by those wellbeyond the immediate Carnwath Road area and tens of thousandsof people in Fulham and Chelsea will see their lives blighted by lorrymovements.

Hands welcomes funding tocreate new school places

The Department for Education has announced an additional 500million of funding for school places. This includes over 15 million ofnew capital funding to expand schools in Hammersmith & Fulham, meeting the demographic need for more primary school places.Already in 2011/12, Hammersmith & Fulham has received more than4 million, and Kensington & Chelsea more than 2 million, from whatis known as Basic Need allocation.Responding to the announcement, Greg Hands M.P. said: This isgreat news for local schools particularly in Hammersmith andFulham, which has seen a huge increase in demand for places.

The last Labour government repeatedly ignored warnings about the

pressure on school places caused by a rising population. Just as withthe economic mess, it left the Coalition Government to take action, ensuring that every local area has the school places it needs. We had already protected schools spending and targeted the poorest

pupils through the 2.5bn pupil premium. Now, this new money willhelp local schools to deliver a better education for all.Cllr Helen Binmore, H&F Council Cabinet Member for ChildrensServices, said: One of the major priorities of this council has been

the creation of Schools of Choice. More local children are being taughtin H&F than ever before as standards are improving and three newschools have opened, Ark Conway Primary and two secondaries - theWest London Free School and Hammersmith Academy."This is an exciting time for education in Hammersmith & Fulham andthis grant is very welcome. Under our schools of choice programmethis extra 15 million will ensure that we can continue to meet theincreasing demand for local primary school places from parents.
