Greetings to our members from India, Pakistan, South Sudan, Congo and The United States of America on their Independence Days. Chile and Malaysia on their National Days, our Aboriginal members on NAIDOC week, celebrating their achievements and fi nally to our Buddhist organisations and members on celebrating Vesak and Buddha’s enlightenment on the 22nd July.

With the restructuring of the Community Aged Care Packages (CACP) and possibly the Home and Community Care (HACC), which involve major changes in funding arrangement, our CEO went over east and to another conference in Perth, to acquaint herself with the changes. The committee was also acquainted with the logistics of running these programmes through professionals who briefed them one evening. In essence clients will now have the choice of

choosing their provider. Funds are allocated to the client. The provider is then funded based on how many clients have chosen them. Chris Brahmananda our CACP provider is currently on annual leave and any queries can now be directed to Manil, who is currently assisting in this regard. Manil is also handling the Beyond Gambling grant very successfully. Our HACC programme continues to expand and we are seeking newer directions in the area.

As the Hall, Kitchen and Lesser hall have been refurbished and the state of the art audio equipment installed, new charges will apply which can be ascertained from the offi ce. We are currently in the process of installing new lighting and digital projection equipment. As members would be aware the Chilean Consulate operates from our offi ces. We welcome The Nepalese Consul General who will now have his offi ce in our building. This brings together in cohesive fashion all the units of cultural diversity.

Our Youth Co-ordinator KC is to be congratulated for running a very successful Ethnic Cricket World Cup, in Mount Lawley. Six nations participated. Defence Minister Stephen Smith and Mayor of Town of Vincent Alanah Mctiernan fl ipped the coins and got the show underway. Felicitations once again to the Sri Lankan team who, like last year at Lilac Park, won the championship.

It was a great delight to host the new Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Finance and Energy the Hon. Mike Nahan, Member for Riverton. He has been closely linked with the association over a lengthy period of time. Our conglomerate association Presidents and Secretaries, members of the Consulate Corps and directors of Government bodies and business entities formed part of the warm communal spirit. It was a magical night enjoyed by all.

It was great pleasure to attend the Lotterywest 80 year celebration of community funding and the function at the Indonesian consul Generals offi ce to celebrate the new look Garuda International Airways now in partnership with Etihad. At both these functions the Association was promoted.

I ask you to strongly support the Australian Asian Association Spring Dance on the 12th of October. The price of $ 30 per ticket includes Dinner and will be held at the Association Hall. It will be a great night full of song, dance and fun.

We have liaised with the Town of Vincent in organising the Eid Celebrations, which will take place in the park opposite our building in October.

I thank you, our dear members for your strong support of the association, which is expanding in geometric proportions.

It is the end of the fi nancial year and we are busy getting ready for the annual audit and the preparation of the fi nal accounts. Fortunately, as always, we will have the Annual General Meeting in October which gives us plenty of time.

We were delighted with the response we received to our invitation to meet Hon. Dr. Mike Nahan, the newly appointed Minister for Energy, Finance, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs. The hall was fi lled to capacity with a gathering of 185 attendees, consisting of the Presidents and Secretaries of our member organisations, their partners, government offi cials and the many friends of the Association. A guard of honour of children in their national costumes greeted the Hon. Minister on arrival, who was welcomed by President Mel Fialho. On the way in, the Minister stopped at every table to speak to the assembled guests. The Minister commended the Association on its energy, commitment and

continued role as a leading multicultural organisation, and thanked the executive, staff and volunteers for the time and energy put into organising the event.

The department of Health and Age Care (Federal) has announced that effective 1st July 2013, packaged care will be known as Home Care Packages Level 1,2,3,4. Level 1 and 2 equates to former Community Aged Care Packages (low and high care) Level 3 represents EACH and Level 4 is EACHD. Along with these changes, the Department has also introduced a new service delivery system Consumer Directed Care, where the consumer (client) has a greater say over the design and delivery of age care services.

As usual the majority of my time is spent applying for funding, seeking new programs and keeping up with the changes brought in from time to time by funding bodies. For instance with the HACC program the Centre Based program has been replaced by” Home from Home” which involves working with smaller groups and the organisation of several outings. Funding has been sought for this program in our application for Growth Funding.

Is there any Senior from among our members who would like to take over the Friday Seniors group and revitalise it with recruiting new members and organising activities.

Contact me if you need help. Thank you, till next time.

JUNE TO AUGUST 2.00pm TO 4.00pmEVERY THURSDAY IN THE COMMITTEE ROOM(UPSTAIRS)

The Association has been keen to foster participation in sports activities as a Continuation of our efforts to conduct sports activities for the benifit of our member groups. Our first attempt in September 2012 to organize a Soccer tournament at Edinburgh Oval, Curtin University, was extremely successful. As a result we have been inundated with requests to organize a Soccer Tournament during winter. We had discussions with the Inclusive Development Officer of Football West, Gordon Duus, who has assured us that football west will support us in numerous ways. He was very enthusiastic to be involved with the idea of working with the CALD communities and will promote the event as best as possible.

This letter is therefore to seek EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST from our member groups wishing to participate in the 2nd AAA Soccer Tournament to be held on the weekends in September. It will consist of 8 or 16 teams with 9 a side. The sports activities are focused on youth between 18 and 30 years. It is our plan to make the Cricket and Soccer

Tournament annual events, gradually expanding on the number of teams and participants.

We would be grateful if you can get back to us by 12th August 2013 if you are willing to form a team. As the tournament is restricted to 8 or 16 team, we need to accept the interested teams on a “first come, first serve” basis. More

information on venue, equipment and transport will be provided, when we hear from you.

Thanking you in anticipation for your help and cooperation in this regard. For further information, please contact Youth Coordinator - Yam K.C on (08) 9328 1160 or [email protected]

MEDIA RELEASE

ICCWA will be establishing and coordinating a road trauma support service for West Australians. Funded through the Road Trauma Trust Fund, the service will be offering statewide support and counselling to anybody impacted by road trauma; including but not limited to bereaved family members, friends and colleagues, offenders, injured people and their carers, drivers, passengers, witnesses and people fi rst on scene.

Deborah Costello CEO of ICCWA said “The ripple effect of one road incident is overwhelming. One split second of distraction, one simple mistake, one crash, can impact dozens of people and their communities. The trauma goes well beyond the tragic loss of life or the physical disabilities.”

“We are extremely proud to be coordinating and bringing this service to our state, to not only support our community, but also to educate. We believe road safety is not just the responsibility of governments, everyone needs to be responsible for their own safety and the safety of all other road users.”

“Behind the statistics huge numbers of people can be devastated by the trauma and many have taken this awful journey alone or with little help.”

“This new service will exist to support people who have been directly affected and to raise awareness in the community on the long term consequences of road trauma.”

AAA NEWS AND ACTIVITIESMEDIA RELEASE

In 2011, an estimated 209,000 people were living in Australia with chronic hepatitis B and 226,700 people were living in Australia with chronic hepatitis C. The rate of liver cancer in Australia is expected to double in the next decade and this is mainly attributable to hepatitis B and C. In Australia, most of the people with chronic hepatitis B were born overseas in countries where hepatitis B is prevalent, such as South East and Northern East Asia, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa. It is estimated that one third of people living in Australia with chronic hepatitis B do not know that they have it.

HepatitisWA (Inc) is a non-profi t, community-based organisation committed to raising community awareness in relation to viral hepatitis and assisting in obtaining the best possible care and support for people living with viral hepatitis.

Our Multicultural Services Offi cer, Rosita D’Adamo, works in collaboration with CaLD services, CaLD community groups and health services to enhance CaLD communities’ understanding of and

capacity to respond to viral hepatitis, particularly hepatitis B. In February, Rosita provided information sessions to each of Australian Asian Association’s centre-based day care groups, generating some interesting discussions.

At HepatitisWA, we provide the following services:

A confi dential information and support service for people at risk of, affected by or living with viral hepatitis. Information and support can be provided via our telephone helpline or a face to face appointment with our Support Offi cer. Interpreters will be booked by us if necessary.

Regular peer support gatherings, for people affected by hepatitis, covering a range of topics including how to prevent the transmission of hepatitis, living well and treatment.

A confi dential clinic, every second Wednesday, that does testing for viral hepatitis and provides free vaccinations for at-risk groups.

Information and education workshops for the general community and for targeted groups such as culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD), youth and prisoners.

Workshops aimed at workforces, customised to the specifi c needs of the workplace.

A comprehensive range of printed resources, in a range of languages, available from our premises and by post on order. We also produce a newsletter which is circulated to members and service providers on request.

If you would like to speak with our Multicultural Services Offi cer about enhancing hepatitis awareness and assistance to your community, please phone Rosita on 9227 9802.

To make a call to our confi dential Hepatitis Helpline, please phone 9328 8538 (metropolitan callers) or 1800 800 070 (country callers).

Appointments with our Support Offi cer can be made by phoning 9227 9806 or send an email to [email protected]. Please tell us if you will need an interpreter.

If you would like to read more about viral hepatitis, go to our website at www.hepatitiswa.com.au or phone us on 9328 8538 to order some printed resources.

COMMUNITY SAFETY MONTH PARTNERSHIPS Partnership Opportunities: Community Safety Month 2013

This resource has been developed to encourage organisations and community members to actively support and become involved in Community Safety Month (CSM), a WA community safety program held in October each year.

CSM is coordinated by ICCWA in WA with guidance from the the Community Safety Month Organising Commitee. ICCWA currently receives no core funding to coordinate CSM and relies heavily on small grants and community support to keep the program sustainable.

This guide outlines the opportunities available for you to support the month, whether this be fi nancial, or through in-kind support. ICCWA is also open to other contributions and donations and encourage you to discuss these ideas with us.

To enquire further about these opportunities or for more information about the month please contact Elecia Wheat, Community Engagement Coordinator at ICCWA on (08) 9420 7212 or email [email protected]
