News and Notes About and From the Hall’s Companies

Hallʼs Launches New Website: Streamlined & Mobile-Ready With An Eye Toward The Future Analytics from the previous website guided the development of the crisp, clean new look and targeted content of updated hallscorp.com.

There have been some signifi cant changes to the Hall’s Corp website since it was fi rst implemented in 2007. According to Wes Jayne, Sales & Marketing Coordinator for Hall’s Ware-house Corp & Hall’s Fast Motor Freight, “The deci-sion to build a new website was driven by both continu-ing technology changes and business opportunities that have increased traffi c to the website by user groups such as customers, potential customers, employees and others who have an inter-est in what Hall’s provides. business comes from buzz in the marketplace. As many of them check out Hall’s online, it’s important that they see something that refl ects the company’s dedi-cation to maintaining clean, professional and effi cient operations.

Benefi ts Update

Inside the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)The Family Medical Leave Act entitles eligible em-

ployees to unpaid, job-protected leave for specifi ed family and medical reasons while continuing your health insurance coverage. Here’s how it works at Hall’s.

Who is eligible? Employees who have worked for Hall’s at least 12 months, and who have worked at least 1,250 hours in those 12 months.

What are you entitled to? Eligible employees get twelve weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for the fol-lowing reasons. 1) You are incapacitated due to preg-nancy, prenatal medical care or child birth. 2) You need to care for your child after birth, adoption or foster care placement. 3) You need to care for your spouse, child or parent who has a serious health condition. 4) You have a serious health condition that renders you un-able to perform your job.

What counts as a serious health condition? An illness, injury, impairment, or physical or mental condi-tion that involves either an overnight stay in a medi-cal facility, or continuing treatment by a health care

provider for a condition that either prevents you from performing you job duties, or prevents your immedi-ate family member from participating in school or other daily activities.

What else should I know about FMLA? You do not need to use this leave benefi t in one block of time. Leave can be taken intermittently or on a reduced leave schedule when medically necessary

You may choose, or Hall’s may require you, to use accrued paid leave (vacation or sick days) while taking FMLA leave.

You must provide suffi cient information to Hall’s to determine if the leave qualifi es for FMLA protection. That information should includes anticipated time pe-riod and length of your leave.

If you have ques-tions or think this may apply to you, contact Human Resource.

your life and those around you.Q: How do I achieve Financial Wellness?A: You have to be able to…

■ Manage your money, having little to no debt or a plan to reduce your debt.■ Live within your means.■ Have an emergency fund.■ Build wealth for older years. ■ Not worry about money all the time!

Your Money At Work

Q: Why is Financial Wellness important?A: It relieves stress and reduces worrying about

money and fi nances. Without the worry, you may be hap-pier and more productive. If you want to live in a com-fortable fi nancial environment throughout your life, raise your level of awareness in making fi nancial decisions.

Whatever stage of life you are in, fi nancial wellness is important. In general, people are concerned about meeting day to day needs, unexpected expenses that arise and retiring when they want. If you are just start-ing your career, meeting day to day needs and getting the right job may be your focus. If you are in the middle or nearing the end of your working career, job satisfac-tion, market performance and health care costs may be what you are focused on.

At any stage, being a good saver is important. It can be challenging to fi nd the money to save but by looking closely at your spending habits – needs vs. wants – you just may fi nd a few extra dollars that you could save for you and your family down the road.

Tips for Long-Term Weight Loss & Maintenance

■ Start with small changes to your diet. Concen-trate on what you drink and snack on before making drastic changes to your main meals. You’d be sur-prised how much your body changes after cutting out the soda and potato chips! Next, work on portion sizes.

■ Progress slowly with your exercise routine. Start off with walking for 20 minutes every-other day, and build up from there. If you try to exercise too much too soon, the chances of you injuring yourself or burning out too early will increase. Don’t be afraid to try some-thing new -fi nd an activity that you enjoy!

■ Practice healthier stress management tech-niques. Instead of suppressing your stress with junk food and alcohol, try going for a walk, talking to a fam-ily member or friend, getting a massage, or starting a new hobby or craft.

Drop 15 in 2015: Get the Scoop

For Your Health

Daniel DeFalco of Hall’s Warehouse Maintenance joined the Drop 15 program in February and has al-ready lost over 28 pounds. And he continues his healthy weight loss of 2 pounds a week. He attributes much of his success to increasing his weekly exercise from 0 to 5 days per week, cycling for up to 50 minutes each day. Daniel also eliminated all fast food from his diet and decreased his weekly alcohol consumption. By December, Daniel plans to lose more than 15 per-cent of his body weight and healthfully maintain his weight loss. Keep up the great work, Daniel!

In the past, popular fad diets and strict, high-in-tensity exercise programs provided several employ-ees fast and noticeable weight loss results. However, due to their strict and unsustainable guidelines, these practices provided only short-term gains and did not encompass the attainable lifestyle changes needed to provide long-term success.

In February of this year, the “DROP 15 in 2015” wellness program was launched to motivate our em-ployees to avoid the drastic measures previously taken to lose weight quickly. Instead, the program en-couraged making small, reasonable changes to their diets, exercise patterns as well as stress manage-ment techniques that would ultimately result in healthy weight loss and maintenance.

Participants were challenged to lose at least 15 pounds or 15 percent of their body weight between February and December of this year. That meant that over 11 months, participants would only have to lose 1.5 pounds per month in order to reach their 15-pound weight loss goal. This was intended to provide par-ticipants the time and ability to experiment with what small changes work best for their bodies and overall lifestyle.

As of May, several of the 56 people lost over 10 pounds and are valiantly continuing their efforts.

Employees are still encouraged to join the pro-gram if they are interested – it is never too late!

After Before

Daniel DeFalco is on track to lose 15% of his bodyweight this year.

Nicole Sigur Graduates Summa Cum Laude Inspite of Life-Long Battle With Cystic Fibrosis

“She is and always has been my hero.” That’s how Patty Sigur, the building manager for Hall’s Edi-son facility, describes her daughter. “Nicole does not let Cystic Fibrosis stop her. If she is hospitalized, she jumps back into life with both feet the minute she’s dis-charged.”

Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that effects the lungs and digestive system. To date there is no cure for this deceptive disease. “Most peo-ple don’t know she’s ill,” Patty says. “The patients usu-ally look healthy on the outside despite how sick they may be.”

In May, Nicole graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kean University where she received a Bachelor’s De-gree in Communications/Public Relations with a minor in Psychology. Graduating in the top 10% of a class with 3,000 students is an outstanding accomplishment for someone not fi ghting the battle against a life-threat-ening disease. But Nicole’s condition requires inten-sive medication and daily therapy. She is hospitalized often but she still fi nished in four years, while working, keeping up with friends, giving back to the community and maintaining a long-term relationship with her boy-friend Jared.

According to Patty, Nicole is always up for a chal-lenge. “Even when she was in the hospital, she was a character, keeping everyone on their toes.”

Nicole has worked with special needs children from a young age and throughout college, she was the head

Access tutor for stu-dents with disabilities as well as those in danger of not completing college. Her intimate understandings of the struggles faced by people with disabilities and what they’re families go through allowed her to be empathetic while still push-ing them to reach their potential.

While at Kean, she led a joint campaign between the school’s Public Relations Student Society of Amer-ican chapter and Kean University Disabilities Services to raise awareness about Autism.

Now that she has graduated, Nicole hopes to work for a non-profi t organization in the health care fi eld.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier, who salutes the fl ag, who serves beneath the fl ag.

And whose coffi n is draped by the fl ag, who allows the protester to burn the fl ag.

Tech Tip #5

Searching Accellos

Have you ever tried to remember the name of an Accellos program, but since you don’t use it very often, the name es-capes you? Or you wondered if a program exists to perform a specifi c function? If you’re on an Accellos Warehouse Logic menu, try the SEARCH BUTTON. It looks like a magnifying glass at the top left of the menu.

When you click on the SEARCH button, a window opens where you can enter any key word(s) that may help you fi nd what you’re looking for. For example, if you can’t remember the name of the program that resets the printer (LMPR) for printing forms like the BOL, simply type the word “PRINT-ER” in the SEARCH fi eld, and the system will return the choices shown below.

Perhaps you’re wondering if there’s a program that reports “inventory turns.” Enter the word “TURNS” in the SEARCH fi eld, and you will fi nd that two reports are available: IATC and IATR.

The menu’s Help command is useful for a detailed explanation of each program, but SEARCH is often helpful for fi nding programs or features that you need quickly.
