Playford Alive remains on track to keep delivering on the rejuvenation of the region.

With significant development already under way, residents and visitors alike can see the enormous changes being made in the project area.

Many benefits are already being enjoyed by the community, while work on a new Town Centre, wetlands, parks and new streetscapes will bring major change over time. Add the economic and social benefits of the project, and it’s clear that this is an urban renewal scheme on a scale not seen before in South Australia.

One of the most anticipated new community facilities, the Stebonheath/Curtis Roads wetland, continues to take shape with the recent completion of bulk earthwork excavation.

On a smaller scale, the former St Gerard Catholic Church site on Peachey Road has recently been extensively landscaped. This is an excellent example of one of the project’s goals of building community capacity while redeveloping the area. The 15 local people who carried out the work gained valuable training while contributing to the significant improvement of a new housing site.

I am pleased to see that the State Government’s housing refurbishment program remains on target for the recent quarter. This program delivers improvements for residents while contributing to the visual appeal of local streetscapes.

I also invite the community to get involved in several important events in the coming months.

The third Playford Alive Local Heroes Awards, to be announced in November, recognising the incredible work being done by community and business heroes in the area. Also coming up is the Playford Alive Community Fun Day, to be held on Saturday, 17 November at the Munno Para wetlands. Now in its ninth year, the event attracts crowds of more than 2000 and is generously supported by local businesses and volunteers. I look forward to seeing you there.

Meanwhile, the OPAL Festival in October is promoting good health across the project area. There have been plenty of free or low-cost ideas to show how people of all ages can eat well and be more active. These activities have been held at a variety of venues, including schools, libraries and parks.

Young drivers in the area also have a great opportunity to undertake driver safety and education through the City of Playford’s Skills on Wheels program, funded by the State Government’s Crime Prevention and Community Safety Program. Everything from how to buy a safe car to driver awareness training is covered in this very worthwhile initiative.

I encourage residents and others interested in the future town park to have their say at community consultation sessions to be held later in the year.

My thanks also go to the Community Reference Group, which I met with in August, who are hardworking residents and workers in the area providing valuable input in the development of Playford Alive – and thank you for the Centrals scarf too!

2 Spring Edition 2012

Playford Alive a centre of excellence

The choice is yours

With the arrival of spring, activity at Playford Alive is set to further pick up pace as this exciting community continues to develop.

Work this year has been consistently on schedule as the civil construction program creates new lots, while more and more homes are being built and others renovated.

There is plenty happening around the project area, and while much of it – such as the reconstruction of Peachey Road and ongoing work on the $4.9 million Stebonheath/Curtis Roads wetland – is highly visible, there are other community-building aspects of the project that will provide long-term benefits for residents.

This includes the addition of three areas of Playford Alive – Peachey Road, Newton Boulevard and Stages 3C and 3D which together are bound by Peachey Road, Newton Boulevard and Douglas Drive – to the National Broadband Network (NBN). Whether it’s for work requirements, improved access to education services, faster Internet speed for the family or receiving pay-TV content, the NBN will provide residents and businesses with the next generation of high-speed fibre broadband.

The Playford Alive Initiatives Fund is contributing to the development of the Stretton Centre, an employment hub that will focus on research, training and business development. The $15.3 million project will receive $11.3 million in funding from the Federal Government. Located opposite the Curtis Road Town Centre, the Stretton Centre will showcase innovative approaches to workforce development.

Landscapers are also preparing to start planting around the recently completed road to the new Munno Para Train Station, creating a more attractive environment or commuters and passersby.

Work has also progressed on Housing SA properties, with 13 homes upgraded between July and September – exceeding its quarterly target of 12. The Housing SA schedule aims to upgrade 60 properties per year and

provides existing tenants with improved amenities including upgraded kitchens or bathrooms, front landscaping, fencing and new windows.

The Uniting Church is pleased to be a part of the Playford Alive community, agreeing to develop a focal point for parishioners at the corner of Curtis and Coventry Roads, Munno Para.

Meanwhile, people who want to have a say on how the new town park will take shape can take advantage of an extensive public consultation process to begin later this year – a great way to provide input into the way Playford Alive evolves. Further details will be announced to the community separately.

Safe to say, activity is surging ahead as Playford Alive continues to create a vibrant environment for residents and businesses alike.

John Blaess Director – Major Projects

There is a home to suit every buyer at Playford Alive. Whether it’s a low-maintenance option or a bigger backyard, the project offers a wide range of housing choices to cater for any lifestyle.

Nowhere is this more evident than around the Town Centre precinct and the new Train Station.

In these areas, medium-density housing offerings will include townhouses, apartments and smaller homes. Similar options will also be available around reserves and along public transport routes.

This type of housing provides a low-maintenance, cosmopolitan lifestyle – an alternative for people who do not want or need large yards. Current options include cottage, terrace, villa and courtyard homes and a range of apartments.

One of the project’s key objectives is to provide a variety of living options to ensure it caters for a diversity of homes and lifestyles.

The majority of housing in the project will be the more traditional detached homes on individual lots, with smaller allotments representing only a small proportion – up to 15 percent of the total housing developed in Playford Alive.

Visit the Playford Alive Sales and Discovery Centre to see what type of home and land option will best suit your needs.

Putting ‘feet first’ to walk, cycle or scoot to school is the message behind a new public art project for John Hartley Primary School and OPAL.

Students have been creative, painting a series of art pieces along the Davoren Road footpath that links the school with the new Stebonheath car park.

The theme of the art project is “Think Feet First”, which is OPAL’s current health message to encourage children and their families to consider walking, cycling or riding a scooter as a way of getting to, or part of the way to school or the shops.

City of Playford OPAL Manager, Lisa Atwell says the art will extend along the 500m footpath.

“The artwork will encourage children and their parents to park the car and walk the remaining distance to school,” she said.

“Active travel to school is a great way for children to get some physical activity before and after school, and it also reduces congestion around the school gate.”

The design of the artwork was coordinated by local artist John Whitney after classes at all year levels submitted their own suggestions for the footpath project. The school’s indigenous students also worked together to create artwork that represents their school community.

The paintings are now complete and will be officially launched in Term 4.

The OPAL Program is a joint initiative of the City of Playford and the State and Federal Governments to encourage children and families to eat well and be active.

The Playford community is gearing up for its annual night of nights, the third Playford Alive Local Heroes Awards.

The awards recognise the community and business heroes who help make Playford a better place to live and work, and will be announced at a glittering presentation on Monday, 26 November at the Playford Civic Centre, Elizabeth.

An initiative of Renewal SA and the City of Playford, the Local Heroes Awards honour the contributions made by groups, businesses and individuals to create community initiatives and training and employment opportunities.

The awards include the Governor’s Youth Awards, the Playford Alive Achievement Awards and the Mayor’s Youth Recognition Awards and nominations have now closed.

Renewal SA Chief Executive, Fred Hansen said the quality of nominations for the 2012 awards was strong and the difficult process of selecting finalists and winners was well under way.

“The awards celebrate the range of job and training opportunities that the Playford Alive project creates for locals,” Mr Hansen said.

“Our thanks really go to the many contractors, local agencies and training providers who support the opportunities this renewal project offers and recognise the importance of giving something back to the community in which they work.”

The 26 November presentation will be hosted by radio broadcaster Amanda Blair and feature The Voice runnerup Rachel Leahcar, with awards to be presented by His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR – Governor of South Australia, Mayor Glenn Docherty, City of Playford, and Renewal SA Chief Executive, Fred Hansen.

Putting young people in the driver’s seat A new driver training and road safety program is helping young people in Playford reach a life milestone that will help connect them with training and jobs.

Launched in July 2012, Playford Skills on Wheels is the first 12-month driver safety and education program for local 16 to 25 year olds that provides a pathway to gain L and P plates in a safe and structured setting.

The program is made up of a range of activities, from Y-Drive, to Wheels in Motion, Motorvate Young Drivers and Don’t Drive a Lemon Car. Coordinated by the City of Playford, spaces are available in all of the activities to run under Playford Skills on Wheels. City of Playford Neighbourhood Development Officer, Silvana Cusack says young people can choose from one or all of the elements of Playford Skills on Wheels, including the one-day Motorvate driver attitude and behaviour program at the Adelaide International Raceway.

“We’ve already put 27 young people through Motorvate, which teaches things you won’t necessarily learn in a traditional driving lesson, including practical car maintenance tips,” Ms Cusack said.

“It’s a real eye-opener and will be offered again on 28 November 2012 and 3 April 2013.”

Playford Skills on Wheels has also prepared close to 10 people for their Learner’s Permit test in Y-Drive, and more participants are sought for when the activity is repeated in October, March and May.

Learner drivers can then get help to gain a Probationary Licence through Wheels In Motion, which offers a mentor driver and car so learners can complete their log book requirements. Wheels in Motion will run in February and May 2013 and beforehand participants must attend a SAPOL Road Safety and Driver Awareness Forum to learn about the ‘fatal five’ factors of road accidents.

“We also ask participants to agree not to take part in risky driving such as tailgating, speeding or drink/drug driving and will partner with VTECH Automotive Training to teach locals how to buy and maintain a roadworthy vehicle,” Ms Cusack said.

The Playford Skills on Wheels program is run by the City of Playford and funded by the Attorney-General’s 2012 Crime Prevention and Community Safety Program.

Tying the knot in Playford AlivePlucking up the courage, he called Marlene and after hundreds of phone calls and emails, Ron made the journey to meet Marlene face to face.

The two hit it off and soon Ron was packing up and selling his Melbourne home to start a new life in a new city with Marlene.

The two were recently married on the patio of the home they were building together at Playford Alive.

“The house was still being built, but we thought what better way to start our new lives together than saying our nuptials at the home we were building for our future,” Ron said.

“Our home builder, Sterling Homes arranged for the tradespeople to tidy up the area so we were able to be married in a civil ceremony in front of witnesses.”

Later, the couple celebrated with friends on a caravanning trip to Wallaroo with the Carefree Caravan Club where they were thrown a mock wedding complete with a top hat and veil!

Ron has recently joined the Playford Alive Community Reference Group.

What better way to start a new life than being married in the house you are building together – and that’s exactly what Ron and Marlene Jones of Munno Para did.

Having both been widowed, it was a mutual friend who decided that Ron, who was then living in Victoria, and Marlene would make great companions.

“I had expressed to a friend that I wasn’t pleased with the thought of spending the rest of my life alone, and before I knew it I had Marlene’s phone number in hand,” Ron said.

Local Profile

SANFL honour a sweet end for Brad Getting back to basics was the key to ending the football season on a high for Central Districts star and Gawler local, Brad Symes.

The 27 year old half-back was jointly awarded the SANFL’s highest individual honour, the Magarey Medal, alongside South Adelaide mid-fielder Joel Cross, after a difficult final season with the Adelaide Crows.

“It can be tough sometimes at AFL level when you’re not really given the amount of game time or opportunities that you desire,” said Symes, who has played with Centrals for almost a decade.

“It’s so easy to get caught up in team selections and winning that you forget to pay attention to the building blocks that will help you get there.

“So I just took the time this season to get the details of my game right and be the best I could possibly be every time I stepped out onto the oval.”

Growing up in Gawler, Symes often juggled his passion for football and cricket with his education.

“Dad would bring me down to Adelaide Oval for cricket three times a week as well as playing footy at Gawler Centrals and for school – so I had a pretty busy schedule,” he said.

“There is a great standard of footy at school level, but as I progressed into the development squad for Central Districts my school was great in accommodating my commitments.”

It was studying at Trinity College that Brad learnt the importance of a strong academic foundation.

“I did okay at school and went on to study part-time at university to get my degree in financial planning,” said Symes.

“There are never any guarantees with a career in sport and it has a finite lifespan, so it was reassuring to have something to fall back on.

“I would always encourage kids with a talent for sport to dive in and give it 100 percent. If it is your passion you will always do a good job, but it is important to have options for the future if for some reason it doesn’t work out.”

Symes is looking forward to the next stage of his professional life as he prepares to open a new men’s and women’s fashion shop with wife Danielle in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs.

Mark Oliphant College celebrates new bus arrival

Travelling to excursions for students with special needs at Munno Para’s Mark Oliphant College has just become a whole lot easier.

The college community is celebrating the recent arrival of a 22-seat coach from Variety SA, which is having a big impact on the college’s two special needs classes as well as the wider college community.

The bus is the first and only for the Reception – Year 12 college and Deputy Principal, Grahame Ferguson says it has been a tremendous benefit for students.

“Our special needs children travel in small groups which adds to the complexity of excursions,” he said.

“It’s useful to have a small coach to take them out in a comfortable environment with staff they know.”

Mr Ferguson said the Sunshine Coach had also been used to transport other students in the school to activities such as maths competitions and sporting commitments.

“We’re delighted and grateful to have it,” he said.

Variety SA raises funds to buy equipment and other tangible items for children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs.

The Sunshine Coach was presented to Mark Oliphant College by Variety SA Chief Executive Officer, Nigel Smart and Vili Milisits from Vili’s Cakes, which is a sponsor of Variety SA.

Instant success for training program

Paving the way to new careersThe transformation of a Peachey Road parcel of land for new housing allotments has helped 15 local people gain accredited training in horticulture and landscaping.

While undertaking a four month Certificate II in Horticulture-General Landscaping with local registered training organisation Para Worklinks, the local men and women spent three weeks working on-site in August at the former St Gerard Catholic Church site on the corner of Peachey Road and Wilson Street, Davoren Park.

It was the first time a Playford Alive civil construction contract had included the mandatory requirement for a contractor to run a live training site, said Playford Alive Employment and Community Initiatives Manager, Emma Sckrabei.

With the contractor and Para Worklinks working side-by-side, participants gained real industry skills in landscaping large areas, including paving, irrigation placement, planting, mulching, reading plans, plant identification and the use of machinery.

The 1.4 hectare site at Davoren Park is on the market with a mix of individual allotments and larger development sites available.

An innovative training project has delivered an unexpected bonus – ongoing work for two participants and extra training for another two.

The Playford Alive project, at the Little Glory Baptist Church at Smithfield, ran two six-week training programs to give local people new work skills while carrying out a much-needed upgrade of the site in partnership with Uniting Communities.

Fifteen local men and women took part in each course, run in April and June, completing a Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure.

Drainage problems at the site had resulted in part of the western wall of the church being flooded when it rained. The first group of participants cleared part of the site and dug trenches for new drainage pipes, commenced pipe laying and installed asphalt pathways. The second group laid pavers, completed pipe work and built a pergola.

Playford Alive Employment and Community Initiatives Manager, Emma Sckrabei said eight participants in the first group received mentor training and five volunteered to mentor participants in the second group. Training community mentors was a key focus of this program.

“Two participants have gained employment with Playford Alive contractor LR&M Constructions while another two will be working for Uniting Communities as casual mentors on future local programs,” she said.

Another two participants have been offered $3,000 civil construction training scholarships donated by Uniting Communities for plant operation training at Civil Train SA.

“This was our first program with Uniting Communities and we are looking forward to working with them again, particularly around the mentoring support,” Ms Sckrabei said.

About 80 people attended the joint graduation ceremony on 27 August.

The Playford Alive Initiatives Fund contributed $20,000 towards the project, while Civil Train SA contributed a further $160,000.

Building a new lifeFestus Mugenzi knows about transformation.

The former school teacher from Burundi in eastern Africa spent three years in a frontier refugee camp before coming to South Australia almost five years ago to make a new life for his family.

Now he is helping to transform Playford Alive, where he has worked on landscaping more than 100 properties over the past year.

“I like how we do different kinds of jobs in landscaping – concreting, paving, gardening and fencing,” he said.

After completing a building and construction training program with Playford Alive, Training Prospects and Infuse, Festus, 39, was placed into work experience with Playford Alive contractor Adelaide Property and Gardens (APG) as part of the Economic Development Commitment clauses in Playford Alive contracts. Festus was then offered a job with APG, which is landscaping new homes and Housing SA properties at Playford Alive.

He and his wife – who married in the Mtendeli refugee camp near the border of western Tanzania – and two sons live at Salisbury North, but are planning to move to Playford Alive.

“I like it here very much. I was lucky to get to Australia,” he said.

Mandeville Street works together for common reward Community spirit is alive and well in Davoren Park following the area’s first Police and Communities Together (PACT) week in September.

An initiative of Elizabeth LSA, with generous support from a number of community groups and local businesses, residents of all ages came together to give Mandeville Street a good old tidy up.

Elizabeth Operations Manager, Alby Quinn, said it was fantastic to see neighbours become friends and work together in a genuine spirit of trust, cooperation and partnership.

“PACT not only helped improve the area for local families, but it was great to see people – especially the kids – getting such a kick out of working together to achieve a common goal,” said Alby.

“The kids were so enthusiastic about being involved and it was an excellent way for them to see just how much can be achieved by working together and taking pride in the things we have as individuals and that we share as a community.”

In just four days, fences were painted, gutters cleared, lawns mown, gardens weeded and window screens and walls repaired. A beautiful mural was painted on the fence and a new playground from Renewal SA and sponsored by Playford Alive, is soon to be installed.

With the residents having now reclaimed their street, there is a newfound pride in the local area and there is a real commitment to see this continued.

“Everyone is getting along and working together and tidying up people’s gardens. I will help in the future if anyone needs my support,” said 15 year old Kiandra.

At Playford Alive’s Living Showcase, we’ll help your new home ideas grow. Being Adelaide’s biggest display village, you will discover more of everything you need, to make every room in your new home livelier.

With the inspiration of wandering through heaps of new home styles from 13 of Adelaide’s top builders, the Living Showcase has become the don’t -miss – must see destination for Adelaide home buyers.

The sales centre is easy to find, just take Curtis Road off Main North Road, Munno Para or the Northern Expressway and follow the signs.
