Hooptime Basketball Congratulations to our basketball teams who represented our school so well and had a fabulous time at Hooptime. All teams played
exceptionally well.
A special thank you to Mr Devisser for his great organisation of the day and to the coaches who did a great job. Thanks also to our parents who took the time to support and
encourage the teams.
Hats are Back from Tuesday 1st September
For many years most state schools followed a simple but effective rule; that the wearing of school hats in terms 1 and 4 was compulsory and in terms 2 and 3 it was not. The Cancer Council of Victoria changed their policy a little while back and now remind schools that to be considered a SunSmart school,
as we are at Launching Place, hats must be worn at all times whilst outdoors
at school between September and April.
This means for the final three weeks of this term, hats will need to be worn at school by all children. The good news is our uniform shop always has a
large number of hats available in all sizes.

A reminder that next Wednesday 2nd September, is Book Character Dress Up Day. This is a great way to celebrate National Literacy
and Numeracy week so please join us in dressing up and bringing along your favourite book to share with the grade.
Book Character Dress Up Day
Often we are asked “what books should our kids be reading?” Reading is a very personal thing – some of us enjoy being taken into a fantasy world while others thrive on ‘facts’, so recommending a book to a child is not as clear cut as one might think.
We need to take into account: The child’s interests. Current understanding and knowledge of different topics. Preferences for ‘type’ of book e.g. humorous, fiction, non-fiction. Reading ability.
We can however direct you to some websites which can guide you as you support your child’s reading:
1. http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/events/prc/Pages/booklist.aspx
This is the official web site of the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Scroll down the page and you will find six reading lists categorised by grade levels. Most libraries have these labelled on their shelves with clear spinal tags. You can easily find these in your public library simply by scanning the spines of the books.
2. http://www.goodreads.com
This site often appears when you request a ‘list’ of books.
Scroll down and you can search for lists by ‘category’. Begin by clicking on ‘children’s books’. Once you have the results of this, then scroll down and browse the different categories they have.
3. http://www.australed.iinet.net.au/Book_news.html
‘Australed’ is a great site to locate great Australian literature by topic and ‘age’. If you scroll down the “Children’s” list you can see a variety of categories.

Books which have received a Newbery Honour are universally recognised as top reads. This web site gives you links to not only their winning books but books which were recommended and came close to winning.
Daffodil Day Friday 28th August
Daffodil Day is one of the Cancer Council’s most advertised fundraising events and this year, every donation grows hope – hope for better treat-ments and hope for greater support. As the largest merchandise based event in the Southern Hemi-sphere, it is a day to show our support for all Australians affected by cancer. So please buy a wristband, daffodil or badge from one of the many supporters in our local area.

Rhyme
The Preps have been
listening to lots of stories
and poems that use rhyme.
We have also been
experimenting with making
some of our own
interesting rhymes. Here
are some of them.
