At our February meeting we discussed the contents of the forthcoming Spring 2012 newsletter. At our March meeting we finalized plans for the Spring Egg Hunt and approved our 2012 budget. The budget for 2012 is $14,250 including income from membership fees, other donations and newsletter revenue against expected expenses of $14,000. At our April meeting we had a presentation and discussion by Ken Kroeger, Project Manager for Parks and Community Services Department of the COB, on how to develop strategies to make the Tyler property our park. We also amended the 2012 budget to include an additional expense of $100 to cover an increase in our insurance coverage for 2012. We cancelled our May meeting due to illness and unavailability of our executive board. The President’s Message Bruce Young

This newsletter is announcing our annual 4th of July Community Picnic (held on Independence Day, Wednesday July 4th. See inside this newsletter for details.)

Greetings fellow Newport Hills neighbors. This summer newsletter announces our 11th annual 4th of July Picnic. This is by far our biggest event that this organization sponsors and we can use your help. We estimated that last year we served over 800 burgers, 600 hot dogs and 400 Quesadillas as well as providing condiments, salads, chips and water. We think that this year’s picnic will be as awesome an event as last year, so please come and help make it so.

We need a Secretary as well as volunteers for other open board positions including a Newsletter Editor and an Advertizing Coordinator to help the Newsletter Editor and Treasurer. To cover the absence of a secretary and therefore the lack of postings of meeting minutes for February, March and April I am providing a brief summary of the past meetings activities. For a status on The Tyler property – the committee is forming and will move forward on strategies and possibilities. With regard to our NB Zoning concerns – nothing is new. Hopefully, the Fall newsletter will contain more details on both activities.

This newsletter continues to provide you information on our NHCC Membership Drive for 2012 (our fiscal year began in April). Please consider contributing to your NHCC to continue our efforts in making Newport

Hills a great community. See inside this newsletter for details.

The Newport Hills Community Club, our local merchants, the Newport Hills Community Church and the City of Bellevue are hosting the 11th annual 4th of July Celebration. Festivities include a children’s parade, an old fashioned picnic, live performances, field games, prizes, arts, Dizzy’s Tumble Bus and lots of fun the traditional Newport Hills way! This exciting event begins with Mr. Ed Raftery in his 1928 all original Model A Ford Roadster pick-up and the color guard leading the children’s parade with decorated bikes, trikes, wagons and strollers around the track at Bellevue’s Ringdall Middle School (currently home to Tyee Middle School). After the parade a traditional flag ceremony is presented by our local Scout troop followed up with an old-fashioned picnic. Hamburgers, hot dogs, cheese quesadillas, potato salad, fresh fruit, and other delicious picnic dishes are prepared and served up by your Newport Hills volunteers. As part of Newport Hill’s annual celebration of the Fourth of July, we will sing old time favorites and patriotic songs led by the Newport Hills Community Church worship team followed by Cornerstone Dance Theater & cultural dancers, Lee’s Martial Arts and our local cub scouts chapter. Fun activities during the Picnic include: water balloons, face painting, kid’s games, sports, Dizzy’s Tumble Bus, and various display booths. PLUS a potential visit from the Fire Department with a real fire engine. Frisbees, tug-of-war and other fun games are also popular with the kids. A HUGE THANK YOU to all of the neighbors (past and present) who made our 4th of July Picnic and Children’s Parade an enjoyable community event in the past! The success of this event is a reflection of the shared sense of community and involvement which many of us experience here in Newport Hills. THANK YOU SO MUCH! If you have questions regarding the children’s parade please contact the children’s parade chair, Cheryl Nygaard at [email protected] or 206-465-3105. Thank you Cheryl & Dan Nygaard for organizing this fun event!

Please contact the July 4th Picnic Co-Chairs.The NHCC is looking for high school students to volunteer at the 4th of July Picnic at Ringdall Middle School. Not only is it a fun and easy way to get involved in our neighborhood, but students will also receive community service hours. Last year we made over 200 statues and are eager to set a new record for “statue making” this year. The lines may be long, but don’t be discouraged. We will do our best to make sure your thumb is “cast in stone”. We will be there from 11:00AM until 2:00PM so don’t miss out on the fun!
