Have you booked your appraisal yet?

The Trust’s Appraisal Season is now upon us, taking place between 1 April and 30 June this year. Within this period, it is our ambition to see 90% of Team DBTH receiving a good, quality appraisal.

Having your appraisal is important because it gives you feedback on how you are doing at work, how you can develop and what support is available to help you on this journey. It’s also a good time to take a minute and reflect on your achievements over the past 12 months and catch-up with your line-manager, when ordinarily you may not get the time to do so. In order that everyone feels confident and motivated to undertake their appraisal this year, we have refreshed the appraisal process in order to ensure that people value their appraisal and see it as a good use of their time. As such we are giving people a choice of two types of appraisal: Development: This appraisal is about having an in-depth conversation about your growth as a member of Team DBTH as well as the next-steps that you and your line-manager feel you need to take in order to develop further. This can also encompass discussions about further training and education. Maintenance: This appraisal is for those who feel comfortable in their role, have no current developmental needs and do not feel they need an in-depth discussion at this time. This is the shorter of the two types of appraisal. Once you’ve decided which kind of discussion that you want, head to the appraisal intranet page here, download the relevant documentation and schedule in your appraisal with your line-manager – it’s that simple. We’ve even created a short, informative video to explain the appraisal process and why it’s worthwhile to undertake. Please take a few minutes to watch this video and also share within your team meetings. Thank you in advance for your support and helping us to achieve our goals this Appraisal Season.

Our Quality Improvement Journey and the exciting next steps

We are pleased to announce that we have been selected as one of seven trusts to work together as part of NHS Improvement’s ‘Lean Programme’. Being part of this three year national programme will allow us to build on the excellent Quality Improvement (QI) work that is already taking place across the organisation, as well as our well-established ‘DBTH Qii Way’.

The focus of the NHSI programme is on delivering results patients will see and feel. This will be using QI and ‘lean’ methods to empower staff and patients to improve their own processes and ways of working, and to improve the care we provide. Previous trusts who have been involved in a similar programmes have seen significant improvements in their patient feedback, CQC ratings and in their staff engagement.

This next step on our improvement journey will:

• Give us access to additional practical support from NHSI focusing on areas for improvement that are identified as important by our staff and patients • Support us to spread improvement across even more of the organisation through the use of a rigorous and focused approach• Allow us to be part of an important network of colleague organisations across the NHS where we can share best practice and learn from others too.

Overall, the focus of our programme will firmly be on delivering results which will make a real difference to the patients we serve, empowering members of the team to improve and innovative upon the ways in which we work.

As one of a few trusts to be selected for this programme, we are therefore excited to get started and will share more about how you can get involved in the next steps in our DBTH QI journey as we progress, in the coming weeks and months.

Encouraging the next generation of #TeamDBTHWe want to thank everyone involved in the organisation and hosting of our recent Newly Qualified Nurse and Midwife recruitment events.

Taking place at both Bassetlaw Hospital and Doncaster Royal Infirmary, these open days were a huge success, attracting around 60 soon-to-be qualified nurses (both adult and paediatric) and around 40 student midwives. All attendees were invited to come along and meet the team at DBTH and explore what it’s like to work at the Trust. The visitors were invited on a tour of both hospitals and had an opportunity to have a look around the areas they were most interested in. We want to express our thanks to everyone who helped to make these events possible, in particular our Education Leads and Recruitment Team, and everyone else who took the time to showcase why DBTH should be number one when it comes to starting a career within the NHS. Thank you!

Moira Hardy Karen Barnard Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals Director of People and Organisational Development

Your highlights of 2017/18As we've reached the end of the financial year, we're looking for your thoughts on what has been the biggest highlight of your year, either as an individual or as a team. Let us know here and we'll select some of the answers to be included in the Annual Report!

They would like to invite you to take part in a survey which should only take 5-10 minutes to complete. Your answers will be invaluable in providing information to further improve access to research opportunities to both staff and patients at DBTH.

You can participate from any computer here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ResearchSur

The Research and Development team will also be dropping off some paper copies of this survey to the Wards to ensure that staff who do not have access to computers will also have the opportunity to complete this survey. Thank you for taking the time to offer your feedback.

Costa Coffee opens its doors at DRILovers of frothy coffees, luscious lattes and express espressos can rejoice as Costa Coffee officially opened its doors at Doncaster Royal Infirmary on Monday (16 April).

Richard Parker, Chief Executive, was on-hand to cut the ribbon on the new outlet, which complements the recent addition of Subway and the Hot Kitchen just a few metres away in the refurbished dining room.

The Costa coffee shop will be open 7.00am to 9.00pm Monday to Friday and 8.00am to 7.00pm on the weekends. For the first week you can grab a free bottle of water when you purchase any main meal, hot snack, salad or sandwich.

Bargain hunters will also be pleased to note that Costa Coffee cards function as normal at the new store, allowing you to collect reward points on each visit.

Over recent years, our kitchens and dining rooms had been growing long in the tooth and were in need of a spruce-up. These recent, and much needed, improvements form part of the new partnership the Trust has entered into with caterers Sodexo, with all remaining work expected to be finished in the coming days and weeks.

Trust nominated for national flu vaccination awardWe are pleased to announce that our flu vaccination campaign has been nominated for NHS England’s Flu Fighter 2018 awards in the category of Social and Digital Media.

Our Communications and Engagement team worked closely with Occupational Health and Wellbeing to design and deliver an eye-catching publicity campaign. Taking the lead from last summer’s cinematic offerings from a galaxy, far, far away, the flu jab was given a decidedly intergalactic make-over, complete with Jedi, lightsabers and a parody of Star Wars’ iconic opening crawl. Called ‘Flu Wars – The Last Flu Fighter’, the campaign had well-known members of staff strike their best poses for fake film posters, as well as get involved in the creation of a teaser trailer, detailing when the vaccination would be available for members of staff. Thanks to the heroic efforts of our vaccinators, in October 2017, we became the first acute NHS trust to vaccinate 75% of patient-facing staff, an achievement made for the second year–running. Richard Parker, Chief Executive and Registered Nurse, personally administered the 3,385th jab, the landmark injection. The NHS England Flu Fighter 2018 awards will take place Tuesday 24 April, when the winners will be announced. Good luck Team DBTH!

Sweet donation from Parklands Care Home On Monday 9 April, Parklands Care Home visited children's ward and donated two sweet hampers for the children.

Dr Balchandra attends Parliamentary lunch meeting Dr Balchandra has attended a Parliamentary lunch meeting in the House of Commons to discuss outcomes in hernia surgery (Patient Related Outcome Measures).

Dr Balchandra was invited to attend the meeting on April 26 to discuss the development of effective data capture for hernia operations and options for commissioning of hernia surgery in England.

The attendees included Member of Parliament, NHS England commissioners, a Royal college of Surgeons’ representative, Secretary of the British Hernia society and a handful of Consultant Surgeons with interest in hernia surgery.

Mr Balchandra is a Consultant Upper GI & Bariatric Surgeon at DBTH. He is the Clinical Lead for Bariatric Surgery and has a keen interest in hernia surgery with special interest in Laparoscopic Inguinal hernia and “complex” abdominal wall hernia repairs.

Mr Balchandra is actively involved in clinical research aimed at improving outcomes in patients undergoing hernia repairs. He is the Principal Investigator for a Randomised Controlled Multi-centre clinical Trail comparing the clinical outcomes of conventional mesh with “fixation” and the latest “self-gripping” mesh in patients undergoing Laparoscopic Inguinal hernia repair.

He is also the senior author in a Review of mesh fixation techniques for Cochrane UK.

He was instrumental in “setting up” the Laparoscopic Inguinal hernia repair workshop, which is run twice a year in Bassetlaw District General Hospital. He is the Course Director, leading an experienced Faculty. The forthcoming course in June would be the 14th edition of the workshop. These courses offer “Hands-on” training in performing Laparoscopic Inguinal hernia repairs under close supervision of the Faculty. The workshops are aimed at Consultants and senior surgical trainees with emphasis on safety, and cost-effective and durable techniques.

The workshops are attended by delegates from all over UK & Ireland and, over the years, have had an increasing demand for places and excellent post-course feedback.

What you need to know In short, these are organisations set-up externally to an NHS Foundation Trust, but still within the ownership of the organisation. In doing so, trusts report flexibility around working terms and conditions, greater income generation, wider prospects in areas like apprenticeships, opportunities around procurement and tendering, as well as being able to reduce tax costs.

A number of NHS trusts are currently exploring this model, while some have already adopted this way of working such as Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust and locally at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Our position as a Trust At the Trust, we are focused upon delivering the best patient care, whilst also providing value for money, and as such we would always explore options which would help us to achieve these goals.

With that said, our position as an organisation remains unchanged and no decisions have been made regarding implementing a WOS at DBTH.

When will we know more In March, a discussion was held by our directors on the theory, opportunities and risks of setting up a WOS. Union representatives were invited to attend and engage in this discussion, expressing their views on this matter. As an exploratory session, no decisions were made and no preferences expressed.

If our position changes in the future, rest-assured members of Team DBTH will be kept up-to-date and any proposals would require formal talks with our Board of Directors, Council of Governors and staff, as well as union representatives.

Over the past number of weeks and months, you may have heard about ‘Wholly Owned Subsidiaries’ (WOS) within the NHS.

Good Practice for Cyber SecurityThe Government’s Chief Security Advisor has sent a letter to the Trust, issuing advice on how to avoid a potential cyber-attack, leak, or any other attempt to undermine the organisation.

These measures are strictly precautionary and have been produced in response to the recent Salisbury incident, the majority of which are embedded best practice at the Trust:

Tips and Guidance 1. Precautionary measures should be in place so that, in the event of a disruption, business critical services can

resume. Are you conversant with your business continuity processes if IT systems become unavailable? i.e. How do we continue to work without the computers?

2. It is vital that staff only use devices that have been provisioned and assured by the Trust.3. Users must store information in places that are certain to be secure.4. Staff should report any suspicious activity to their line managers.5. To report a cyber security incident, contact the IT Service Desk and use the priority option.

As ever, our IT teams are hard at work to try and ensure our network and systems remain safe and secure, monitoring traffic and keeping an eye out for suspicious activity. If you have any questions or require advice / support, please contact Robin Smith, IT Security & Continuity Manager on Ext. 644507 ([email protected]).

Data protection is changing! The new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will start being enforced on 25 May and will replace the current data protection directive.

Although the key principles of data privacy will remain, many changes have been proposed to the regulatory policies and the Trust can face large fines for GDPR breaches. For general information on the new Regulation, visit the GDPR website here: https://www.eugdpr.org/ Keep an eye out in future editions of Buzz for more information on how this affects the Trust specifically and what might change in your area.

Thank you #TeamDBTH

I just wanted to write and say thank you for the care I received whilst a patient at Bassetlaw Hospital recently. I was admitted on Thursday 15 March after complications with a water infection.

My experience in the Emergency Department was excellent from reception through into the nursing care. The doctor who saw me listened to my concerns, kept me informed and told me as early as possible that I would be admitted because he was not happy with my results. Again, the nursing staff and service assistant who took me for x-ray, and even the gentleman who came to take bloods were friendly and efficient. I was admitted to ATC , everyone I came into contact with were professional and caring. I was then moved to A4 and again the great care continued. I would also like to say that the medical care I received was first class, and I felt included in the discussion throughout, having good and clear information about what was happening with me. I felt very confident being discharged. I even visited the Sunday Service in the Chapel, which was very enjoyable, and also had a visit from the Chaplain Simon on the ward. Thank you all for the time and care given to me. I have spent a lot of time at Bassetlaw over the years with family and we have only ever found excellence and great care. Thank you all.
