NewLifelines October 2016 October Sermon Series

Shiny gods Finding Freedom from Things that Distract us.

October 9 - Naming Our Idols When we think about idolatry, we usually think about graven images—golden calves, silver statues—that were worshiped during biblical times. Or we might think of religions other than Christianity. So why are we, twentieth-century Christians, focusing on idolatry? An idol is anything, or anyone, that receives the primary focus of our energy or resources, which should first belong to God.

October 16 - Money, Work, and Debt One of the greatest bondages in America today, in many of our lives, is the bondage of debt. It is not God’s intention for us to be buried under the burdens of financial worry. However, we must apply God’s directives for financial freedom, which means not worshipping the “shiny gods” of consumerism and giving our energy and focus to them. We also need to understand why we work.

October 23 - Faithful, Save and Give We are to be the channels through which God’s blessings and redemptive intentions ow to the world. John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, gave people three directives on the use of money. These directives are still relevant today. He said, “Earn all you can, save all you can, and give all you can.

October 30 - AFFIRMATION OF FAITH On Sunday, October 30, the following young people will celebrate their Affirmation of Faith: Lauren Bice, Vanessa Hautekeete. Sheldon Hill, Dean Kimball, Jacob Klyn, Eva Newland, Joslyn Sperry & Garrett Westvold.

Hundreds of Christian denominations and dozens of non-Christian traditions have followers in the United States. How do we view this wide variety of beliefs and practices? Honoring Our Neighbor’s Faith deals with these questions by deepening our understanding of various faith traditions - as well as our own - making it a valuable resource for group study or personal exploration. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. Adult Forum meets Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the Resource Center. During the month of September, we will explore the following beliefs: the Presbyterian Church, the Reformed Church in America, the Religious Society of Friends and the Roman Catholic Church.

Youth GroupMiddle & High School youth are invited to meet at the church on Sunday, October 9 at 4 p.m. for a trip to the North River Corn Maze in Carlisle. Bring money for your own snack

OWLs LuncheonAll Older and/or Wiser Lutherans are invited to meet for a Dutch Treat Lunch on Friday, October 21 at 11:30 a.m. Location TBD - watch for updates

Pub TheologyThe next Pub Theology meeting/discussion with our friends at the Norwalk Christian Church is scheduled for 7 p.m. on October 27 at Cal’s in Norwalk. Everyone is welcome! No experience or prior study needed.

Please contact Amanda Fletcher at [email protected] for questions or to help provide food. This is a wonderful service opportunity for our group. All women of the congregation are invited.

Celebration of Baptismal Anniversaries & Welcome New MembersOn October 23 we will celebrate Baptismal Anniversaries of those baptized in October and welcome into membership anyone who has expressed interest in joining New Life. If you've been visiting for a while and would like to become a member of New Life, please speak with Pastor Nate or contact the church office.

NewLifelines October 2016

After School ProgramThe NLLC After School Program (ASP) starts October 4! Please consider giving a few hours of your time during the upcoming school year to help with this program. It is a worthwhile use of our volunteer hours.  A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the back of the worship area or contact Lisa Smith (360.4828) [email protected] or the Church

Office (285.5965) if you could help out a few hours a month.

Freezer Meal PrepCome join us in preparing freezer meals on Wednesday, October 19 at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will each make one dish to donate to members of our congregation who are facing challenges, and several to exchange with others. Contact Kari Murray ([email protected]) to RSVP or with questions.

NLLC SCRIP ProgramNew Life offers SCRIP gift cards, which allows our church to receive a small percentage for each gift card purchased. In recent years, we have used these funds toward paying down our mortgage. There are numerous gift cards offered - stop by the table near the south entrance after service to check out the offerings! We are currently looking for a few more volunteers to assist with selling SCRIP after the 8:15 & 10:30 services. If you would be willing to assist, please contact Leslie Merriman at [email protected].

Pet Blessing - October 9Join us for a special blessing of our pets and animal friends following 10:30 worship on October 9.   Bring your furry, feathered or scaled friends to church to receive a special blessing.

Fall Harvest CelebrationAll Sunday School kids are invited to an afternoon of pumpkin painting, apple cider, snacks and fun on Saturday, October 15 from 1-3 p.m. Contact Abby Beckman at [email protected] if your child is planning on attending or for more information. Please feel free to invite a friend!

Membership DirectoriesIt’s time to update our Membership Directories. If you have any updates to your contact information, please let us know. Update forms are available in the back of the worship area. Forms may be left in the church office door or send us an email at [email protected]. Thanks for your help
