Our journey began over 18 months ago. We sat with our architects, EJE, and when they asked what it is we wanted for our students, we said we wanted school to be part of a family. We wanted a place that recognised everyone individually and celebrated this. We wanted this new build to become a place where students and teachers found the joy in learning. Exciting Times! The orientation and transition to school program for the 2017 Kindergarten class started last Friday. The children read stories, sang songs and played games. The highlight for many students was the Southern Cross School Treasure Hunt. On the treasure hunt students worked with their Year 3 and 4 buddies to go on an adventure and find special places in our school, such as the library, canteen and playground. While the children were busy completing those tasks, parents were also undertaking learning about ways to support children in the transition to school, as well as being taken on a grand tour. Student visits continue to run from 9:30-11:00am Fridays in Weeks 3-5. A special assembly is being held in Week 5 at 10:30am to congratulate students for completing orientation.

Congratulations Georgia Farley,

Camp KoinoniaLast Monday fourteen students from our senior support classes attended their annual camp at Camp Koinonia, Evans Head. We were lucky enough to share these two days with students from Mullumbimby High School and Casino High School support classes. Students participated in a Taste of Circus workshop, canoeing, Swinging in the Chapel, and the firm favourite, laser tag.

On Monday night we had a Wacky Wig disco complete with fog machine and disco ball. This was followed by a high paced game of spotlight.

The students had a great time as did the staff who attended. The students were awesome representatives of our school and we would all happily take them back anytime. We can’t wait until next year!

Year 7 2017 Transition DayOn October 20, Southern Cross School K-12 and Ballina High School peer leaders assisted in the second transition day for the upcoming Year 7 students. First we competed in the Amazing Race which was a fun way to show Year 6 students around our school. At recess and lunch we enjoyed a barbeque held by our SRC and Ballina High School staff and students.

In the afternoon the peer leaders coordinated mini activities in a program called Team Work Counts. The Year 6 students participated in these fun activities and appeared to really enjoy themselves.

The peer leaders are looking forward to the next transition day in week 7 on November 24.
