St. Matthew’s Counseling Center Jack Doman

It started several years ago with Pastor Brad Resare and I had the idea for our congregation to be a source solace and hope for those who were experiencing difficulties in their lives, especially with relationships. It has taken a while, but in 2011, at the urging of Pastor Stan and with the blessings from the Trustees and the Administrative Board, we have a counseling center in room #1 of the education building. As the year ends, we have held 47 sessions and three Hope for the Holiday’s groups. The center has worked with those with marital concerns, individuals and families going through grief, people with health concerns, issue surrounding children and parent-ing, to name a few. Anyone in our congregation is wel-come to make an appointment to explore their concerns at no cost. Some have had only a single question and we were able to discuss that in just one session, while others have had issues that are ongoing. It is very easy to make an appointment, by calling 805-480-1167. All sessions are held in the strictest confidence.

MANNA UPDATE As we embrace our new year, let us re-member that there are still those people who need our prayers and a helping hand. Please remember to continue to support MANNA by bringing in non-perishable food, hygiene items and baby items.

POTLUCK AT THOUSAND OAKS UMC TO INTRO-DUCE REV. LYNNE AUSTIN AND HER WORK IN HAITI – JAN 28@ 5PM Thousand Oaks United Methodist Church will be hosting the Reverend Lynne Austin, who will give a presenta-tion about her experiences working with Grace Children’s Hospital in Port-au-Prince Haiti. The four Conejo Valley Methodist Churches will present her with Birthing Kits we have put together to support that mission and reduce infant and maternal mortality in Haiti. Please come join in the fel-lowship and learn about this important mission! Saturday, January 28 from 5-8pm at UMCTO, 1000 East Janss Road, Thousand Oaks. Contact Wanda Williams at UMCTO with any questions: 805-241-8845 or [email protected]. RSVP is requested for Potluck. St. Matthews point of Contact: Barbara Karplus 499-3115.

BIRTHING KITS FOR HAITI WORKSHOP AT THOUSAND OAKS UNITED METHODIST – JAN 21 Haiti has one of the highest infant and mater-nal mortality rates in the world! According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), 1 in every 17 women die each year from complications due to childbirth in Haiti. Unsafe delivery procedures caused by using unclean instruments have resulted in high rates of infection after birth for both the mother and the child. You can help! The four Conejo Valley United Methodist Churches will combine forces to supply and assemble Birthing Kits for the Interna-tional Child Care efforts to provide healthy, safe births for the women and infants of Haiti. St. Matthew’s will be sending soap, string (to tie umbili-cal cords) and prayer cards to combine with supplies donated by the other churches. We will assemble the kits to present to the Rev. Lynne Austin at her presen-tation the following Saturday. We hope to present her with 400 kits! Please come, experience fellowship with other Methodists in the Conejo, and contribute to this important mission. Saturday, January 21 at 10am at UMCTO, 1000 East Janss Road, Thousand Oaks. Refreshments provided. Contact Wanda Williams at UMCTO with any questions: 805-241-8845 or [email protected]. St. Matthews point of contact: Barbara Karplus.

WHAT IS A BIRTHING KIT? A compilation of basic tools to increase sanitation. A "Birthing Kit"

includes: 1 clean razor blade; 2 pieces of string; gauze pads; a paper birthing mat; disposable gloves; soap; and a belly band. Simple Supplies that make a world of difference! Barbara Karplus 499-3115.

Although we made our major push to collect items for FTT we would like you to continue to save newspaper comics, paperback books, magazines (they said they don’t need many cooking, home decor or women’s magazines) they have most need for Readers Digest, Time, Newsweek, Sports magazines, etc.
