Pictured is Brandon Glass with Bob Askey April 17, 2012. Bob

and Arlene went on a trip with Brandon to learn fishing out of

Willamette Park on the lower Willamette River. We hooked

and landed this one Springer that day. Arlene and I went back

the next week and used all the tips that Brandon gave us and

hooked four Spring Chinook. Landed three one was wild.

Brandon was very helpful giving tips on how to fish each area

of the river.

Brandon Glass

Brandon Glass who is a third generation fishing guide is the son of Guide Jack Glass. He was born

and raised on the banks of the Sandy River and fished under his father as a deck hand until he

purchased his first boat at the age of ten. From the ages of 10-20 Brandon fished for Northern

Pike Minnow to support his fishing habit and purchases of his first boats. Before Brandon

became a guide in 2006 he worked as a sales specialist for G.I Joe’s in the fishing and hunting

departments to learn from the guides who would come and purchase their supplies. After

working at G.I Joe’s Brandon then worked construction for two years digging and laying utility

pipe until he realized his true passion in life was fishing. It was then that Brandon decided to

follow in his father’s foots steps and become a full time guide.

Mark Grier Report:

Family fish camp in Rockaway Beach 19 - 21 February was a big success! There were

a few glitches, being a first-time event, but overall - no complaints. Over 100 family

members attended and to a person were excited about being there. Tons (almost too

many) of classes and seminars by well-known guides and experts. The stocked trout

may have been planted a little too late and were not in the biting mood, but nearly

every adult and kid caught at least one fish. Good facilities at Camp Magruder, great

food. Looking forward to doing it again! Fish in picture caught on a past fishing trip.

-Bob Rees comments on issues and not everyone agrees. Sometimes it is more of a misunderstanding of

what the issue is. Like his comments to a person not happy about buffers along streams. Bob explains

that the buffer is necessary for fish to survive during the summer months. Without the buffer the

streams temps will be too high.

involved with one of these native fish only groups. Got a reply and no surprise STS never gave permission

for their name to be used and highly disagree with these radical native fish groups.

Hi Bob,

FAP does not support Wild Fish Conservancy or Native Fish Society or any other non-profit that is trying

to close hatcheries for their own personal fishing pleasure and gain at the expense of the masses. I saw

the post on iFish and I have absolutely no idea why we are listed. If you are a member on iFish and can

post could you please post that for me. I am going to personally get a hold of Wild Fish Conservancy

today and have our name removed. Once again I have no idea why we are listed.

Outdoor GPS covered this some years ago. How there was a very popular fishery in

the upper Clackamas River. There was even a hamburger stand, private camp

grounds and a small tackle store. All went out of business after the hatchery fish

were removed. The Native Fish Society theory was that the hatchery fish were

stopping the wild fish from multiplying. That is totally false the same number of

wild fish use the upper Clackamas with normal run size variations each year. No

explosive population of wild fish. Same run of wild with and without hatchery fish.

There are a number of rivers that have shown the same results. Yet groups like

Native Fish Society continue to spread false information claiming their efforts to

shut down hatcheries helped wild fish. NFS staff make a living at destroying our

fisheries.

Catching Your Own Herring and Process Them for Bait

I will be sending out the complete directions that Damon Struble posted on Facebook.

Jigging Herring and Anchovies for bait is a lot of fun and can give you a great supply of bait

later to use for Spring Chinook or to use while your out fishing.

Herring are in Newport Bay and likely other coastal bays. In August on the lower Columbia

River we have seen huge schools of Anchovy. So many that your line vibrates from all the

Anchovy hitting your line and the Fish Finder shows your in a few feet of water. That’s

when it is a good idea to carry along an extra rod to jig some fresh on the spot bait.

This last August while fish near Hammond, Oregon on the Columbia River we ran out of

bait. We remembered running through a big group of Anchovy so we went back to the

area and jigged an easy dozen. Put them on ice in a Ziploc bag with Kocher Salt in it.

Use a Sabiki rig which has six small hooks on it. You attach a weight on the end around 2

oz. to cut the current and get down. Cast out if not over the school of bait. Let sink and

give an even slow pull as reeling and let drop and pull again. You will feel the line get

heavier. Reel in at a medium speed so you don’t loose hooked bait fish. If jigging over the

bait fish just do the up and down motion. Don’t reel up with the first hookup continue so

you get more then a couple maybe one on each hook. I did that at Newport one year and

hooked into what I think was a Ling Cod. It came off because of the light leader the hooks
