Edwinstowe is a village in the heart of Sherwood Forest. Just tothe north stands the Major Oak, the largest oak in England,

estimated to be between 800 to 1000 years old. The nameEdwinstowe means ‘Edwin’s resting place’ because the body ofKing (and Saint) Edwin of Northumbria was concealed in thechurch after he was killed at the Battle of Hatfield Chase, nearDoncaster, at around 633 AD.

The Centre was created in the grounds of a former farmhouse, inthe village of Laxton on the edge of Sherwood Forest in NorthNottinghamshire. The surrounding countryside provides a peacefulsetting and the Centre itself is set in two acres of beautifullandscaped gardens. When it opened in September 1995, it wasBritain’s first dedicated Holocaust Memorial and Education Centre.It was called Beth Shalom, the place of peace.
