The Queensland bush has produced
some of the finest horses to grace the
Australian turf - think Bernborough
(Emborough), Gunsynd (Sunset
Hue), Dalrello (Aloe) and Lough Neagh
(Bachelor’s Persse) among others - and while
yesterday’s two Group 1 winners at Eagle Farm
have a long way to go before joining their ranks,
Stradbroke day in 2020 will long be remembered
as a momentous day as the locals came to the fore.
Trainer Rob Heathcote has won Group 1
races all around Australia and on the world stage
but he registered a first Group 1 in his home state
when Rothfire scored one of the juvenile wins of
the season in the J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m).
Just over half an hour later, former Tolga
galloper Tyzone took out Queensland’s flagship
race, the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m),
giving father-son training partnership Toby and
Trent Edmonds their maiden Group 1 success.
Queensland-trained horses have not
completed the J J Atkins-Stradbroke Handicap
double since 1984, when Prince Frolic
(Mendham) and Daybreak Lover (Namnan) won
each race respectively - and on different days of
the long weekend, too. Continued on page 2>>

Auction house reject Rothfire, already one of the rags to riches
stories of the year after his victory in the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m), may attempt an even greater feat come October
after trainer Rob Heathcote revealed that the world’s richest
turf race, The Everest (1200m) at Randwick, may be on the gelding’s radar.
“It’s a really good story, we’re very pleased for the Heathcote stable,”
Rothfire’s co-breeder Jacob Gleeson, representing his family’s operation
Gleeson Thoroughbreds, told ANZ Bloodstock News. “There are a great
group of owners in this horse and I just hope he takes them a long way. I
hope that he’s the sort of horse that is around for many seasons, competing
in the top races.”
A number of Everest slot-holders have expressed interest in Rothfire
(2 g Rothesay - Huss On Fire by Hussonet) in an attempt to emulate last
year’s winner, three-year-old Yes Yes Yes (Rubick). Newcomers to the race
MiRunners, with their broad ownership base, appear a logical fit for the
race, with Heathcote admitting that their four-person panel had already
interviewed him about a potential deal.
“He climbed his Everest today and note that I did use the word
‘Everest’,” Heathcote told Sky Thoroughbred Central. “He will spell now, I’ll
take him to the paddock on Monday myself, and we haven't put anything
in concrete as there are a stack of races for him - a race like the Coolmore at
Flemington could be perfect. But I have had some talks about The Everest
and I am not talking out of turn. I did an interview with MiRunners, we
know that they have bought a slot and they told me the other day that he’s
certainly in the running for their spot.
“He needed to do that today against a good, strong field of two-year-
olds and I will be eagerly waiting to see where (form analyst) Daniel
O’Sullivan rates him.”
Any Everest deal may have taken a step forward after Rothfire’s victory
yesterday. Sent off as $3.50 favourite, rider Jim Byrne was happy to sit
handy behind leaders Wisdom Of Water (Headwater) and Isotope (Deep
Field) from gate 13. Notably, though, the gelding appeared relaxed and
unfazed, despite the fact he had established a profile as a strong pacesetter.
From the apex of the bend to the Eagle Farm winning post, though, it was
a one-act affair with very little doubt over its conclusion. Rothfire hit the line
three and a quarter lengths ahead of the Steve O’Dea-trained Gotta Kiss (Not
A Single Doubt); The Drinks Cart (Unencumbered) flashed home into third
for Toby and Trent Edmonds, cementing the 2020 J J Atkins as a race for the
underdogs with Queensland horses filling the trifecta.
“Wow. He is some horse, hey? I am lost for words and that is not normally
me,” Heathcote, choking back tears, said. “I have been saying for months he is
doing things even my multiple Group 1 winner Buffering couldn't at the same
stage. I have been a nervous wreck all week, but when you have a jockey like
Jim Byrne you have a big start.

"He is so experienced and calm. He
didn't panic when he couldn't lead and ended up getting the run of the
race. He is bombproof.”
Heathcote, who won the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1000m) in Dubai with
Buffering, believes that Rothfire can follow in his footsteps in the future:
"This bloke can take me around the world."
But while the world may beckon, Rothfire’s background is far more
humble. In fact, it’s almost difficult to believe that, a little more than 12
months ago, few wanted anything to do with the then “unremarkable” bay
or brown yearling.
Unwanted and unfashionable as a yearling and rejected from even the
most minor yearling sales, Rothfire was reared on the Chinchilla property
of Wally Gleeson, his wife Jill and their sons Jacob, Simon and Tom - hence
his nickname, the Thrilla from Chinchilla.
“We’ve just got a little property on the west of the Darling Downs,
it’s not what you’d call renowned horse country,” Jacob Gleeson said.
“Interestingly, though, a stone’s throw from our property, there have been
two Group 2 winners produced before: Rudy, who won a Villiers, and
Seawinne, who won a BTC Cup and a Doomben Slipper. They were bred
on properties within a few kilometres of us, but we are certainly not in a
zone that you’d call horse country. So we feel pretty privileged and pretty
lucky.
“In 10 years that we’ve been doing this, this is our first stakes winner.
It’s a huge thrill for my parents. They work so hard, it’s great to see them
get this sort of success.”
Gleeson patriarch Wally is a former amateur jockey who rode with
success around Queensland, including at Eagle Farm. He has also been a
polocrosse player, as well as a breaker, owner and trainer. However, it is as
a breeder that he has now had his most prominent success, in partnership
with his family.
“We were breeding a few horses for the country circuit and about 10
or 15 years ago, we decided that we should do it a bit more commercially,”
Jacob Gleeson said. “We only breed about 10 to 15 foals every year. We’ve
been pretty lucky to have been mentored by some very knowledgeable
industry people like Steve Morley, Scott McAlpine and Henry Field. That’s
certainly been very helpful in terms of getting us where we are.
“We range between 15 to 20 mares at the moment. We can’t afford
to buy stakes-winning mares or blueblood pedigrees, so we’ve developed
this strategy of buying mares with good damsires down the pedigree page.
I guess Rothfire is a good example of this. He’s out of a mare called Huss On
Fire, she was bought for about $9,500 at the Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale
approximately 10 years ago. The damsires down the page are Hussonet,
Zabeel, Marscay and Northfields.
“So that’s been our way of creating some success. We figure that,
somewhere along the line, hopefully the genetics will kick in and these
mares that may not have a lot of black type up close, the genetic ability
of these stallions might be able to make a horse for us. And fortunately, it
looks like it has worked out with Rothfire.”
Born in September, 2017, the Rothesay colt was the last of six foals
produced by Huss On Fire (Hussonet). Even to his breeders, though, he
hardly set the world on fire.
“It’s funny, he was one of those horses that didn’t stand out at all,”
Gleeson said. “He was just a very plain horse, but there was nothing wrong
with him. You’ll often pick a foal and can see a fault with it, or you’ll pick
a foal and say, this is a standout. But he was the sort of the horse that flew
under the radar, he didn’t raise any eyebrows.
“I tweeted out the video I found today (video link) which was the
video we sent to Rob Heathcote, he actually bought him on the back of
that video without seeing him. If you look at that video, you can see that
he’s just a nice, plain horse, pretty much unremarkable.
“My father, who is a very good horseman, that’s one thing he’d say
about the horse. He just had a very good temperament right from the word
go. Possibly, that’s the difference; obviously, there is more to it than that
but that’s obviously a very big factor in his ability.
“He’s such a bombproof horse; he can jump and then settle, he can
handle pressure and then kick off a good tempo. He takes luck out of the
equation because he puts himself in a position where he doesn’t need
luck. That’s such a helpful asset for his racing career.”
Inspected by sales representatives and bloodstock agents, Rothfire
was overlooked as a yearling prospect. Heathcote snapped him up for
$10,000, although he famously had to pay the bill twice after falling victim
to a phishing scam.
Gleeson explained: “Rob’s a very good payer and we sent him the bill
and just presumed that he’d sort it out, so we were a bit surprised a few
weeks later that we hadn’t heard anything. We were a bit unsure about
chasing it up, but we thought that we’ve got to say something. And then
it all came to a head and we realised that he had paid and it had all gone
haywire. I think he’s paid for himself now.”
It was the fact that Rothfire was prevented from even stepping foot
into the sales ring which prompted the Gleesons to retire Huss On Fire,
although tragedy struck not long afterwards.

“We retired her just after she’d
produced Rothfire because he was proof that the pedigree wasn’t
commercial enough for us to breed horses to sell,” he said. “We had
planned to use her as a nanny for some of the younger horses, but she got
a leg infection and she succumbed to it within 24 hours. We barely had
any time to do anything about it and she was very unwell.”
However, a hint from Heathcote about Rothfire’s potential ability saw
the family acquire two of his siblings, fillies that Gleeson Thoroughbreds
had put through the sales ring as yearlings.
“We were very sad that we lost the mare but Rob had given us an
indication very early this season that Rothfire was going to be pretty
special. We’d sold two of the older fillies out of Huss On Fire,” he recalled.
“One was to Rex Lipp, she was a full sister named Smokin’ Hussay and
we bought her back off the track after she won. She was a bit unfortunate,
Rex thought she had ability but she broke a pedal bone before she was
broken in so she raced injured for her whole career.
“We also bought back a Sizzling half-sister from Angela Davies that got
sold through the Inglis Classic sale. She injured herself before she even
galloped, she bowed a tendon just trotting around the track.
“We bought them both back very cheaply and fortunately, we’ve still
got some upside in terms of the pedigree because we’ve been able to track
those two fillies down. It was a punt at the time, buying them back, but we
didn’t pay much and they are worth something now so we’re very lucky.”
Rothfire also represented the first Group 1 winner for Lyndhurst Stud’s
Rothesay (Fastnet Rock). Having served small books of 28 mares apiece in 2017
and 2018, he found renewed popularity at a reduced fee of $4,950 (inc GST) last
season, serving 98 mares; he will stand again for the same fee in 2020.
“The stallion Rothesay, we just love him,” Gleeson said. “He hasn’t been the
greatest horse for us in the sales ring but we’ve bred a couple of proper racehorses
by him. Rothfire is clearly the standout but there’s another horse going around
in Macau called Golden Conqueror. We also bred him and he’s got a similar
record of six wins and one second, he’s been labelled the ‘boom three-year-old’
there. He’s doing very similar things on the track to Rothfire, although not in a
jurisdiction that is the same as Australia. But he’s a very good horse in Macau.”
While Heathcote is eyeing off the rich spring sprints with Rothfire,
Gleeson believes that he would be a horse capable of getting a mile and
potentially even further should the trainer ever wish to go that way.
“There was a lot of concern and conjecture about whether Rothfire
would get the trip today but we had really no concerns and no doubts,”
he said. “On his pedigree, he’s by Rothesay who was a 1400 to 1600-metre
horse. He’s out of a Hussonet mare who is out of a Zabeel mare so we just
thought that this was going to be almost his pet distance today.
“We thought he’d be a three-year-old miler, that’s the style of horse that we
thought he was and given the way he was bred. So to see him doing these sorts of
things over the shorter distances this early in his career, it’s pretty exciting.
“It’s great that he’s a gelding too because he’ll have some longevity.
People are mentioning him in the same breath as Alligator Blood. It’s
been a long time since Queensland could stake claim to two horses of the
ability of Rothfire and Alligator Blood who have the potential to go into the
southern states and prove highly competitive.”
Rothfire has now earned $708,400, having won six of his seven starts.
The town of Tolga - population 2,718 at the last census - is
known for its peanuts and very little else.
As a nursery for top-class thoroughbreds, it may not be
the Simpson Desert, but it’s not far from the bottom.
Take Tyzone (6 g Written Tycoon - Rezonet by Hussonet) who, on
Doomben 10,000 day in 2017, couldn’t have been much further away
from the Group 1 action in Brisbane. Instead, he was winning an open
handicap at a picnic meeting at Gordonvale, south of Cairns.
However, the deeds of Tyzone - nicknamed the Tolga Tornado - in
winning the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) may throw more of a light
on the north Queensland racing circuit given what he has achieved since
transferring to Toby Edmonds and his son Trent in early 2018.
Yesterday, Tyzone became the talk of Tolga when he took out
Queensland’s most famous race, a year after finishing second. Ridden by
Robbie Fradd, he came with a late flourish to deny game mare Madam
Rouge (Zoustar) by a head with a further head back to Niccanova
(Nicconi) in third.
“I never expected him to do what he has done,” Trent Edmonds told
ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday. “You get a horse from up there, from
the Tablelands, and you think, oh well, he might measure up to Saturday
grade or hopefully a little bit better. He’s won a Group race and now he’s
won a Group 1 - it’s bloody unreal.”
Like Rothfire, Tyzone was also a product of the Darling Downs,
having been reared and broken in by Cameron and Kellie Bond from
their Kenmore Lodge property in Wyreema, just outside Toowoomba.
“He was a handful,” Kellie Bond recalled to Magic Millions. “Tim
Bell breezed him up at the Gold Coast and the horse was flicking his
tail around before the breeze-up and was a bit full of himself. But he
knuckled down in the breeze and the more he knuckled down the better
he went.

"Tim came back and said he had
the most economical action in the draft. He said he was a 100 per cent
professional and, boy, hasn't that turned out to be true.”
Sent through the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs In Training Sale,
the Written Tycoon colt fetched $60,000 to the bid of top North Queensland
trainer Roy Chillemi on behalf of an ownership group headed by Tom Hedley.
“I really liked when he breezed how much he stuck his head out and
tried to go faster," Chillemi said. "Every time he was asked to go faster he
kept finding - he just wanted to run.
"The only thing that worried me at the sale was his size. He's a bit
small, but what he lacks in size he makes up for in heart.
"He showed it with me from day dot. You could take a sit on him and
he would switch off and then he could sprint so well. He's the fastest horse
I've ever trained. He could break 32 seconds over 600 metres at home.”
Winning 11 of his first 19 starts, predominantly at Townsville, Tyzone
was a consistent open handicap performer. However, with a rating in the
mid-80s, options were quickly running out up north and Hedley decided
to send the chestnut down south.
“He was just a prolific winner up north, he was a winning machine,”
Trent Edmonds said. “He was just getting outweighed up there. They
decided to give him a crack with us and the rest is history; he’s been a star.”
The now-retired Jeff Lloyd rode Tyzone in a Gold Coast barrier trial mere
weeks after joining the Edmonds yard. His wraps on the gelding surprised the
stable, particularly the younger Edmonds, then assistant to his father.
“He came back and said that he gave me a Group 1 feel,” said Trent
Edmonds. “To be honest, I thought he was joking - this was a horse from
north Queensland. But he said, no, he gave me an incredible feel. You
could tell he wasn’t joking so it made me pay attention.”
Working his way through the grades, he scored a first stakes win in the
Goldmarket Handicap (Listed, 1200m) in March last year, adding the BRC
Sprint (Gr 3, 1350m) in May before he finished second to Trekking (Street
Cry) in last year’s Stradbroke. As soon as he crossed the line, the Edmonds
pair set their sights on the 2020 Stradbroke.
“It was a 12-month plan,” Trent Edmonds said. “We took him to
Melbourne in the spring, just to keep him ticking over, and we were even
thinking of giving him a big spell and having a long build-up into the
winter carnival. But we didn’t end up doing that and it’s worked out.”
Both father and son were confident of victory on Monday, but 24
hours later, their hopes were seemingly dashed when he drew barrier 21,
coming into gate 16 with scratchings.
"He isn't very big and when he got in with only 52kg we were really
buoyant. But then he drew very wide and we were a bit deflated,” the
younger Edmonds said. "People kept telling us not to worry about barriers
at Eagle Farm and they were right.
“It was pretty amazing. When I saw Vega One looming up outside us, I
thought oh no, I was groaning. But our fella is just so tough.
“I never expected him to get to do this, to do what he has done. You
can always hope but to actually have done it and to have the Group 1 next
to our name, words can’t describe it.”
Not only was it a first Group 1 for Trent Edmonds, who joined his
father in partnership less than a year ago, but it was also a first Group 1
win for Toby Edmonds after more than three decades as a trainer.
"I am just a johnny-come-lately but people like Dad slog along for
years trying to win big races," Trent Edmonds said. "I am so thrilled for him.
Hopefully, we can continue to build on our stable in the years to come.”
Toby Edmonds added: "It's a big thrill - finally. I had to wait for Trent
to come on board to get it.
"Tom Hedley - in the north I don't think racing would survive without
him. He often gets a horse up there that's very good and he sends that to us
- it's great. We are so glad that we can deliver him his first Group 1 as well."
Tyzone is the ninth Group 1 winner for Written Tycoon (Iglesia), who
will stand for $77,000 this season having relocated to Arrowfield Stud.
It was a big day for the late Hussonet (Mr Prospector) too, as he was
the damsire of both Group 1 winners. Tyzone’s dam Rezonet, who died in
July last year, has produced four named foals, including 10-time winner
Five Stars (Hotel Grand), and also has a Winning Rupert yearling filly, who
was purchased for $38,000 by Mishani Enterprises at this year’s Magic
Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.
Tyzone’s victory provided redemption too for the family, with his third
dam Society Bay (Zephyr Bay) second in 1987.
For now, Trent Edmonds is hoping that Tyzone will be able to return
to defend his title in 2021.
“Who knows? Maybe we’ll be back for the Stradbroke next year,” he
said.Tyzone and Robbie Fradd MICHAEL MCINALLY

While the Everest was at the forefront of discussions after
Rothfire’s J J Atkins win, a past Everest runner made
his return to the races in classy style yesterday when
Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt) took out the
Bob Charley AO Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Randwick.
The Les Bridge-trained Classique Legend, who was unlucky when
midfield in last year’s Everest, returned for his first start since finishing
10th in the Golden Eagle (1500m) in November.
Originally set to head to Hong Kong, where owner Boniface Ho has
a string of horses, the four-year-old was instead kept to Sydney once the
Covid-19 pandemic struck. Ho instead decided to target the Everest yet
again with Classique Legend, purchasing the Australian Turf Club slot for
the $15 million feature.
The Group 2 winner was asked to shoulder 60 kilograms yesterday
but proved far too classy, edging away from Southern Lad (Ocean Park)
to win by a half-length with Snitz (Snitzel) a head away in third. Bridge
acknowledged too that, under the circumstances, it was a better win that
it appeared on paper.
"This was the tightest schedule I have ever had for a horse – he's
only been in about seven weeks,” Bridge said. "The horse had to be just
outstanding to win."
"It takes a lot to get me off the bit but I was off the bit today because I
have been worried about the track since Tuesday. It looked closer to heavy
to me but the wide barrier worked in our favour.”
Rider Kerrin McEvoy was also concerned about the potential wet
track.
"I was a bit worried when I got here, they were getting their toe right
into it," McEvoy said. "I rode him every Tuesday for two months and every
time I got off his back he just improved and improved. He is a horse that
comes to hand quickly and he showed that there, he has gone out there
and won that race.
"To be fair he is only 85 per cent. He is not fully screwed down so that's
what class horses can do."
While Classique Legend hasn’t officially been confirmed for Ho’s
Everest slot, he looks all but certain to line up as his representative. Bridge
plans to follow a similar path through The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) and the
Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) to the Everest.
"I will give him almost an identical program to last year," Bridge said.
"I told everyone last year he wasn't ready. He will be a better horse this
spring."
Classique Legend is the second foal out of burgeoning blue hen mare
Pinocchio (Encosta De Lago), a sister to five-time Group 1 winner Racing
To Win. She has also produced Hong Kong’s Group 2-winning three-year-
old Aethero (Sebring), while her So You Think (High Chaparral) yearling
colt was purchased by Ho for $1.1 million at this year’s Inglis Australian
Easter Yearling Sale.

Nine for Pride Of Dubai
Coolmore former shuttler Pride Of Dubai
(Street Cry) sired his ninth first crop winner
yesterday when Achiever (2 c ex Lady Circles
by Ascot Knight) took out the Castelvecchio at
Arrowfield Handicap (1400m) at Randwick. The
Chris Waller-trained colt defeated Street Dancer
(Pride Of Dubai) by three and a quarter lengths
with Pyrmont (Ad Valorem) a further half-length
away in third. Purchased by Star Thoroughbreds
and Randwick Bloodstock for $80,000 at the
Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Achiever is out of
Lady Circles (Ascot Knight), making him a half-
brother to Group 3 scorer Decircles (Encosta De
Lago). Lady Circles herself is out Australian Oaks
(Gr 1, 2400m) winner Circles Of Gold (Marscay)
who is also produced multiple Group 1 scorers
Elvstroem (Danehill) and Haradasun (Fusaichi
Pegasus) as well as Hveger (Danehill), the dam of
Highland Reel (Galileo) and Cape Of Good Hope
(Galileo). Pride Of Dubai stands at Jerrys Plains
for a fee of $38,500 (inc GST) in 2020.
Achiever ends leanrun for Avdulla Achiever’s victory ended a frustrating run of
winless metropolitan meetings for Brenton
Avdulla which stems back to April 25. Avdulla
also won on Princess Cordelia (Bel Esprit) in
the Highway Handicap (1100m) before putting
the icing on the cake with a sweeping victory
on Dealmaker (Dundeel) in the Drinkwise Mile
(1600m). "I haven't ridden a city winner for
about six weeks and I had someone tell me the
other day that I was about none for 80," Avdulla
said "They said, 'are you disappointed?' and I
said, 'not really, disappointing is when you're
going to the pub and the Uber driver goes the
wrong way. That's disappointing. This is just
racing. We all have our runs, our ins and outs

Thunder) by a neck with Daily Spirit (Zebedee)
the same margin back in third. All Banter was
purchased for $30,000 by her trainer at Book 2
of the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale out of
the Mungrup draft. She is one of six winners out
of Group 3 scorer Bantry Bay (Tale Of The Cat)
while she is also related to Herald Sun Stakes
(Gr 3, 1400m) victor Koonoomoo (Dubleo).
I’m All The Talk’s fee for 2020 is currently set
at $7,700 (inc GST) but with Mungrup Stud
announcing their closure earlier this week, he
could be set to find a new home.
First for RothesayLyndhurst Stud’s flagship stallion Rothesay
(Fastnet Rock) sired his maiden Group 1 winner
yesterday when Rothfire (2 g ex Huss On Fire by
Hussonet) scooted away to land the J J Atkins
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm. Rothesay
now joins the likes of Foxwedge, Hinchinbrook
and Smart Missile as sons of Fastnet Rock
(Danehill) to sire a Group 1 winner. Rothesay
stands at the Queensland farm for a fee of
$4,950 (inc GST) in 2020.
Nine for Written TycoonThe recently relocated Written Tycoon (Iglesia)
landed his ninth Group 1 winner in the form of
Tyzone (6 g ex Rezonet by Hussonet) who took
out the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m)
at Eagle Farm yesterday. Second in the same
race last year, Tyzone joins the likes of Written
By, Capitalist and Booker as an elite-level
winner out of the popular stallion. Standing
at Woodside Park in Victoria up until last year,
Written Tycoon was relocated to the Hunter
Valley to stand at Arrowfield Stud for a fee of
$77,000 (inc GST) in 2020.
171 for Exceed And ExcelDarley shuttler Exceed And Excel (Danehill)
sired his 171st career stakes winner and 13th
for the season in the southern hemisphere,
as Aquitaine (3 f ex Thalia by Medaglia d’Oro)
won the Mick Dittman Plate (Listed, 1000m) at
Eagle Farm yesterday. The James Cummings-
trained filly defeated Iced (Better Than Ready)
by three-quarters of a length with Niedorp
(Not A Single Doubt) a head away in third. A
Godolphin homebred, Aquitaine is the only
foal to have raced out of Group 3 placegetter
Thalia (Medaglia d’Oro) who herself is a half-
sister to dual stakes winner Calliope (Exceed
And Excel). Further down the page is Group
2 scoring, elite-level placed mare Bound For
Earth (Northern Meteor). Exceed And Excel
will stand at Darley’s Kelvinside property for a
career high fee of $132,000 (inc GST) in 2020.

Aquitaine earns extended Queensland stayFollowing her win at Eagle Farm yesterday, it
was confirmed that Aquitaine will remain in
Queensland in the hope of adding some more
black-type to her pedigree. "She had been
placed in some black-type races and James
(Cummings) felt she should get a chance to
win a race in Brisbane," Godolphin travelling
foreman Nacim Dilmi said. "She has done well
and she isn't going back to Sydney on the float
on Sunday. I think James is looking at a race like
the Gai Waterhouse at Ipswich for her."
17 for Smart Missile
Twin Hills resident Smart Missile (Fastnet
Rock) landed his 17th stakes winner yesterday
when Ballistic Boy (3 g ex Magical Mist by High
Chaparral) took out the Rough Habit Plate (Gr
3, 2200m) at Eagle Farm. The Chris Anderson-
trained gelding defeated Supergiant (Red
Giant) by a length and a half with Navy Cross
(I Am Invincible) coming home a further neck
away in third. Ballistic Boy was purchased for
$100,000 by his trainer at the Magic Millions
Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Aquis
Farm and he is out of a half-sister to Group 1
winner Distill (Volksraad) as well as the Group
1 placed Mr Tipsy (Montjeu). Smart Missile
stands at Twin Hills for a fee of $22,000 (inc
GST) in 2020.
Ballistic Boy takes Rough Habit PlateChris Anderson's luck finally changed when
Ballistic Boy helped him achieve a boyhood
dream by winning a Group race with a horse
wearing the colours of the Think Big Stud. "Think
Big have been fantastic to me. As a boy I was a big
fan of Saintly who won a Melbourne Cup in these
colours," he said. "It was a dream to win a Group
race with a horse wearing them and now it has
come true. I have had three horses - Ballistic Boy,
Plutocrat and Boomtown Lass - beaten in black-
type races by about a nose in the past fortnight.
The horses are racing well so I was confident my
luck would turn sooner or later."
Promising Opacity wins againPromising three-year-old Opacity (Ocean Park)
made it five wins from seven starts with a narrow
but impressive victory in the TAB Handicap
(1600m) at Randwick yesterday, and a tilt at the
Golden Eagle (1500m) and Epsom Handicap (Gr
1, 1600m) could be on the cards for the spring.
“He continues to put ones next to his name and I
think Hugh (Bowman) thinks quite highly of him,”
O’Shea said. “He's won on him his last two goes.
So when he gets down in the weights, and if he got
into something like an Epsom on 50 kilograms or
51 kilograms I think he'd have plenty to offer."
Bowman steers Lando Bay to Randwick winJohn Thompson believes Lando Bay (Sebring) has
turned the corner since being gelded after going
winless from his first six starts, with yesterday’s
three-quarters of a length victory in the Quincy
Seltzer Handicap (1800m), the three-year-old's
third from five starts this preparation. "He's going
through the grades nicely," Thompson said. "He's a
different horse since being gelded this time in. He's
very honest and true. It was an 11 out of ten ride
from Hughie (Bowman). It was just like watching a
track gallop. He adds a few lengths, I think."
Chapada breaks through for second winDual Group 1 placegetter Chapada (Bullet Train)
has snapped a lengthy absence from the winner's
circle to register just the second victory of his
career in the Grinders Coffee Carriage Paddock
Plate (2520m) at Flemington. "It's just good to
see the horse put them away and win another
race," Mike Moroney's stable representative Jack
Turnbull said. "Hopefully we can build off this. He
hasn't been far away. He's just been a length or
two behind in some good quality races. We'll just
try to find these types of races for him just to get
him back in the winner's circle because he's been
so long out of it."
Three straight for PrezadoOnce described as a non-winner, Prezado
(Denman) registered a third-straight victory
on his favoured Flemington straight course
in the Jim Beam Hill Plate (1000m) yesterday.
Ridden by Craig Williams, Prezado was sent
out the $2.20 favourite before scoring a three-
quarter length win from Snitzkraft (Snitzel)
with From Within (Not A Single Doubt) a length
and a quarter away third. Co-trainers Matthew
Ellerton and Simon Zahra now face the
quandary over Prezado's immediate future. "He
picked them up quite easily and ran through
the line which was pleasing to see," Zahra said.
"But the biggest problem we've got now is there
is not a lot 1000-metre Group races up the
straight, so he's not going to be easy to place.
It's good to get three in a row with a horse that
everyone thought was a non-winner."
Vassilator returns to formThe 2018 Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) runner-
up Vassilator (Zacinto) landed his first win in more
than two years when taking out the VRC Heritage
Handicap (1400m) at Flemington yesterday. The
success was the third from 22 starts for the four-
year-old gelding, all of which have been over the
same course and distance. "He obviously likes
this big flat track and likes to be able to steam
home," trainer Colin Little said. "We have just
eased up on him a bit as he's got a little older as
we seem to think that he needs less work and he's
happier on an easier preparation. Providing Craig
Williams the second leg of a double, Vassilator
scored by short-head from Haunted (Lonhro)
with Romancer (Redwood) a head away third.
Jolly Sailor impressesThe lightly-raced Jolly Sailor (Canford Cliffs)
continued his rise through the ranks with an
impressive all-the-way victory in the Bagot's
Cowshed Handicap (1400m) at Flemington
yesterday. It was the third win from four career
starts for the Henry Dwyer-trained three-year-old
and stable representative Matt Jenkins said Jolly
Sailor was doing everything on raw ability at this
stage of his career. "I begged Henry before he had
his first start to put blinkers on him as I just thought
he'd get run off his feet and get lost," Jenkins said.
"Henry bit the bullet and held out, so whatever he
is doing now he's going to be better for it."

Standoff lands Flemington knockout blowWhile punters may have been shocked by
the victory of Standoff (Smart Missile) at
Flemington yesterday, Grant Dalziel headed to
the track enthusiastic about the filly's chances.
Dalziel, who trains Standoff in partnership
with his son Peter, said the filly had stronger
claims than her odds indicated in the Bagotville
Handicap (1100m). A $30,000 purchase at Book
2 of the Magic Million Gold Coast Yearling Sale,
Dalziel is planning to return there early next
year for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL,
1400m) in January. "She's very immature but
we'll go back to the Magic Millions as you don't
get many opportunities to run in million dollar
restricted races," Dalziel said.
Kay Cee returns with Raconteur winReturning for her first start since taking out
the Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) in
December, Kay Cee (3 f Playing God - Flirt
‘n’ Hope by Mcflirt) yesterday landed the
Raconteur Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Belmont,
ending the winning run of Laverrod (Toronado)
who finished second by a head. “Speedmaps
are tricky to work out but I predicted Paddy
(Carbery, jockey) might lead on Laverrod.
He was well rated so I had to keep an eye on
him knowing he is a handy horse and would
be tough to run down,” winning rider Steve
Parnham said. I made a move a little earlier than
I would have preferred but I always thought she
would get there. She’s a special horse and she is
only going to get better.”

Yesberg hoping for strong saleLady Zafira (Iffraaj) caught Paul Yesberg’s eye
when she won the Pegasus Stakes Handicap
(Listed, 1000m) in 2016, so much so that he
bought her and is now offering her Reliable
Man (Dalakahni) yearling through New
Zealand Bloodstock’s South Island Sale on plus.
gavelhouse.com. “The reason I bought the mare
was that she won the race that I sponsor at Cup
week – The Yesberg Insurance Pegasus Stakes,”
Yesberg said. “She’s a beautiful yearling and
was going to go to Karaka but she cut her leg in
October last year and it wasn’t going to heal in
time. She is by Reliable Man and his fillies are
on fire at the moment, with the likes of Oaks
winners Miami Bound and Sentimental Miss.”
Yesberg will also offer four other yearlings in his
draft.

Perform A Promise lands Naruo KinenHaving been off the track since April 2019, when
third in the Tenno Sho (Spring) (Gr 1, 3200m),
Perform A Promise (Stay Gold) returned in style
when taking out the Naruo Kinen (Gr 3, 2000m)
at Hanshin yesterday. The eight-year-old entire
took the honours by a nose from last year’s
Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) (Gr 1, 2400m)
heroine Loves Only You (Deep Impact), while
there was half a length back to Red Genial (King
Kamehameha) in third. Trained by Hideaki
Fujiwara for Sunday Racing, he took his record
to eight wins from 19 starts, including the
Nikkei Shinshun Hai (Gr 2, 2400m) and Copa
Republica Argentina (Gr 2, 2500m) in 2018.

Four for Make BelieveBallylinch Stud resident Make Believe (Makfi)
sired his fourth stakes winner yesterday when
Mishriff (3 c ex Contradict by Raven's Pass)
took out the Newmarket Stakes (Listed, 1m2f)
at headquarters. The John Gosden-trained
colt defeated Volkan Star (Sea The Stars) by
a comfortable margin of four lengths with
Waldkonig (Kingman) coming home a neck
away in third. Out of the Listed-performed
mare Contradict (Raven’s Pass), Mishriff is a
half-brother to stakes scorer Orbaan (Invincible
Spirit) and Group 3 placegetter Momkin (Bated
Breath) while his third dam Rafha (Kris) is
also responsible for popular sire Invincible
Spirit (Green Desert). Make Believe stands
at Ballylinch in Ireland for a fee of €12,000
(AUD$19,500).
Fillies’ Stakes for Terebellum John Gosden’s Terebellum (4 m Sea The Stars -
Marvada by Elusive City) added a third stakes
victory, and second Group 2, to her CV when
winning the Dahlia Fillies’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 2f )
at Newmarket yesterday. Owned by Godolphin
and ridden by Frankie Dettori, the mare held
off Queen Power (Shamardal) by a length and
a quarter with Magic Lily (New Approach)
coming home a length and a half back in third.
Purchased for €400,000 at the 2017 Arqana
Deauville August Yearling Sale, Terebellum is
out of Group 3 winning mare Marvada (Elusive
City), who herself is a half-sister to Paint In

Group 1 scorer Sound Of Freedom (Duke Of
Marmalade). Sea The Stars (Cape Cross), the
sire of 62 individual stakes winners, stands at
Gilltown Stud for a career high fee of €150,000
(AUD$243,000) in 2020.
Far Above lands Palace House
The James Tate-trained Far Above (4 c Farhh
- Dorraar by Shamardal) produced an all
the way win to take out the Palace House
Stakes (Gr 3, 5f ) at Newmarket yesterday. The
four-year-old defeated Judicial (Iffraaj) by
three-quarters of a length with Major Jumbo
(Zebedee) the same margin back in third.
Far Above is the only foal out of winning
Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) mare Dorraar,
while he is also related to Caulfield Stakes (Gr

runner-up Benbatl (Dubawi) and Toorak

were shelved to campaign him locally instead.

The winning run of sensational colt
Pinatubo (Shamardal) has ended
after last year’s Vertem Futurity
Trophy (Gr 1, 1m) winner Kameko
(Kitten’s Joy) took out the 2,000 Guineas
(Gr 1, 1m) in front of an empty Rowley Mile
grandstand at Newmarket yesterday.
Trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by
Oisin Murphy, Kameko settled behind Arizona
(No Nay Never) throughout the run, before
breaking through runners and holding off the
Aidan O’Brien-trained Wichita (No Nay Never)
to score by a neck.
The Charlie Appleby-trained Pinatubo was
undefeated from six starts before yesterday
and ran to the front with two furlongs to go,
but weakened under pressure and finished a
length back in third. His rider, William Buick,
said there were no issues with the colt and was
pleased with his performance.
It was the first Classic win for last year’s
Champion Jockey Murphy, who is the retained
rider for Qatar Racing and landed his maiden
Group 1 aboard fellow Sheikh Fahad-owned
colt Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy).
"I don't want to cry,” Murphy said. “My
boss, Sheikh Fahad is at home in Newmarket
and obviously with the current pandemic he
couldn't be here.
"I started my career with Andrew Balding as
trainer. To ride a Classic winner, my first one, in
these colours - this horse's father is Kitten's Joy,
the same as Roaring Lion – is incredible. It's the
stuff of dreams.
"It was a gutsy performance. He hardly
blew a candle out afterwards – he must have a
tremendous amount of ability."
Purchased by David Redvers for US$90,000
from Paramount Sales at Keeneland in
September, 2018, Kameko (3 c Kitten’s Joy -
Sweeter Still by Rock of Gibraltar) has had five
starts for three wins and two seconds, earning
£299,612 in prize-money.
He is out of the Grade 3-winning miler Sweeter
Still (Rock of Gibraltar), who herself is a half-sister
to 2012 Racing Post Trophy (Gr 1, 1m) winner
Kingsbarns (Galileo) and Irish 1,000 Guineas Trial
(Gr 3, 7f) scorer Belle Artiste (Namid).
Further back, the family features Group /
Grade 1 winners such as Danish (Danehill),
African Story (Pivotal) and Rip Van Winkle
(Galileo).
Qatar Racing, Redvers and Tweenhills Stud
lost a fellow son of Kitten’s Joy (El Prado) in
Roaring Lion, who died of colic while shuttling
to Cambridge Stud in New Zealand last year, but
they might have found themselves a suitable
replacement in Kameko.
Kameko has shortened into a 3-1 chance
on Bet365 for next month’s Epsom Derby (Gr 1,
1m 4f) and Murphy added: “Before the race, we
always viewed him as a ten-furlong horse and it
will be up to Andrew, Sheikh Fahad and David
Redvers, everyone will think about it.
"This guy has the mental attitude and I
think going there would be absolutely fine. But
12 furlongs is another half a mile further than
the Classic he just won today."

NZ RACING DESK
The Ministry for Primary Industries
(MPI) in New Zealand has
completed testing all adult horses
considered at risk of contracting
Theileria equi infection through association
with an infected imported thoroughbred mare
at Cambridge Stud.
All 263 tests have returned negative results.
The horse concerned was imported
to New Zealand for breeding purposes in
February 2019 and was found to be infected
with Theileria equi as part of standard export
certification prior to onward shipment to
Australia. The horse has not displayed any
signs of illness in its time in New Zealand.
Ministry scientists worked with Cambridge
Stud, whose professionalism and record
keeping has been praised, to quarantine the
horse and immediately test all adult horses
that were either paddock mates of the infected
horse or had grazed the same pasture as the
animal. These 22 animals all tested negative
for Theileria equi.
Subsequent testing was carried out on 241
other horses at the stud to provide confidence
that the operation is free of the organism,
and that there has been no transmission of it
within the farm.
Theileria equi is an organism that can
cause the blood condition piroplasmosis
which causes anaemia and poor condition.
It is primarily spread from horse to horse
by ticks. It is not infectious directly between
horses, and the ticks that are known to
transmit the disease are not a species present
in New Zealand.
The situation temporarily halted the export
of some horses from New Zealand to Australia
as Australian importing requirements include
certification from the New Zealand government
that the entire country is free of Theileria equi.
Exports have already resumed under an
interim arrangement and MPI continues to
work with Australian authorities. Negotiations
are also underway with other importing
countries and are also making good progress.
At the time of its import to New Zealand,
the horse met all the necessary requirements
including testing negative for Theileria equi
within the required 21 days before its shipment.
It had also undergone full quarantine in the UK
before export and in New Zealand on arrival.

A Shetland pony named Cornflakes
more than a half-century ago was
the beginning of an equine love
affair for Blue Gum Farm’s Wendy
Smith, one that continues to this day.
Smith is nominated for the Horsemanship
Award, one of seven categories that will be the
focus of the 2020 Stud and Stable Staff Awards,
supported by Godolphin, and her story is one
of complete dedication to and passion for the
horse.
“Wendy has a vast history of working with
horses and today stands just as motivated,
committed and passionate as she always
has,” her nominator Patti Campbell said. “She
possesses unlimited determination, thorough
reliability and unsurpassed knowledge and
skills.”
For Smith, it has been a lifelong endeavour.
“I believe that I was born with a passion
for horses,” Smith told ANZ Bloodstock News
yesterday. “From as early as I can remember,
I was obsessed by them. I grew up on a sheep
and cattle farm, Dad was a stock and station
agent and bought me a little saddle to put on
a branch of a tree until he bought me my first
pony at five - it was a Shetland pony named
Cornflakes!”

and perform at their very best at the sales. I also am in charge of postnatal
care of foals on the farm. It is very rewarding to see them through from
foals to yearlings or beyond, you become like a proud mum!”
One memorable day occurred on Cox Plate day last year, when Blue
Gum graduates won three stakes races on the undercard: Ideas Man
(Brazen Beau) took the Inglis Banner (RL, 1000m), La Falaise (Canford
Cliffs) dead-heated in the Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) and Sartorial
Splendor (Brazen Beau) made all in the Red Anchor Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).
“I was so proud,” she said. “It was my weekend off so I was watching
from home. It was so exciting to watch - in fact, it was probably best I was at
home as it was very emotional! My phone was going off with Phil and Patti
so excited, we had a celebration on the farm that week. It was fantastic.”
Patti Campbell credits Smith’s work for helping Blue Gum Farm
to record strong results at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale each year,
finishing among the top three vendors the last six years and finishing top
of the table three times.
“These results don’t occur without great effort, commitment and
personal sacrifice, and Wendy delivers all of that,” Campbell said.
Smith believes that she has learnt most of what she knows from horses.
“Some of the key attributes horses have taught me are patience and
understanding, and recognising that understanding what you are asking
of them is the key,” Smith said. “They are all individuals with different
personalities that need different approaches.”
Her love for the horse has also seen her dedicate her time in years
gone by to assisting local Riding for the Disabled groups.
“I worked with Riding for the Disabled in my young adult years, but
not currently,” she said. “I found it very rewarding, helping with the horses
and seeing how being able to ride made such a difference in the members’
lives. And seeing how different and gentle these horses were with people
they knew were challenged, it was quite something.”
The winner of the Horsemanship Award, for which Smith is nominated,
receives a trophy and $10,000 to the winner, with $3,000 to their employer
to share amongst staff.
“I was totally shocked but over the moon at being nominated for the
award,” she said. “I appreciate all the support and all the congratulations
I’ve received.”
The Stud and Stable Staff Awards will be presented during a virtual
ceremony on June 17.
Smith began working with dressage and show horses as a 16-year-old
in 1979 and has worked across all facets of the equine industry.
“I was offered the job with dressage and show horses at Cranbourne
through my pony club instructor,” she recalled. “I was earning $60 a
week plus board, and they also introduced me to stud work as they had a
thoroughbred show stallion and an Arab stallion. I then came back home
to Benalla and worked for Burt Inglis, who was a vet but also had a small
thoroughbred stud farm standing a horse called Hartbalm, he produced a
Group 1 winner in Princely Heart.
“From there, I got a job with standardbreds near Bendigo, where I
obtained a harness driver’s licence and an owner and trainer licence too.
I stayed with standardbreds for quite a while and I did a lot of different
things; I was breaking in, handling stallions, artificial insemination and
so forth.”
She made a pivotal move back to working with thoroughbreds in 1993,
when she moved to Western Australia.
“I managed a small thoroughbred farm over there, but I came back to
Victoria in 1997 with my two-year-old son where I was employed by my
previous standardbred employer,” she said. “In 1999, I wanted to go back
to thoroughbreds so I applied for a job at Collingrove Stud and was put
on as a vet nurse. After a few years in that position, I was then promoted
to assistant manager and was there to see Collingrove transform into
Swettenham Stud. I left Swettenham in 2008.
“From there, I managed a broodmare farm before being employed by
Blue Gum Farm in January, 2012. I’ve been there more than eight years
now, I can’t believe it.”
As yearling manager for Blue Gum, Smith has many responsibilities
and oversees the development of the farm’s youngsters.
“I am involved in raising, handling and weaning our yearlings,” she said.
“As weanlings, they come in every five weeks for farrier work; each week, there
is a different group to see the farrier. They come into the barn on a Monday,
where they are weighed and measured to keep track of their growth rates.
They are rugged, hosed and handwalked and assessed by Philip Campbell,
Blue Gum Farm’s owner. Videos or photos are taken for the owners, they are
farriered on the Friday and then they are turned out in their paddock.”
“In yearling preparations, my role is to lead a great team of people,
organising the feed and exercise regimes for the horses to ensure they look

Analysis: Talented two-year-old Rothfire took his imposing record to six wins and a second from seven starts in taking out this Group 1 feature in impressive style. After a smart beginning from his difficult barrier (13), he raced outside the leader (Wisdom Of Water) early on before settling in third place, tracking a quick tempo. He dashed to the
front at 200m and then raced away to score by just over three lengths and in fast time (1:21.06). Gotta Kiss settled back near the tail of the large 18-runner field, switched deep at the 300m and she impressed in finishing on really well for second. The Drinks Cart settled back in ninth place, one off the rails, improved (wide) rounding the turn and did well in running on nicely for third. Overlord settled near last, improved between runners at the 300m and caught the eye in making late ground for (3.9 lengths) fourth, finishing just in front of Wisdom Of Water who ran a bold race in the lead before tiring late for (4.1 lengths) fifth. Analysis: In a keenly contested finish where the first four horses finished just over a half-length apart, the Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained Tyzone scored a very good win and in track record time (1:20.43). After beginning from a wide barrier (16), he settled back in third last place in the 18-runner field before improving (deep) nearing the turn. He then sprinted well, in the centre of the track, coming with a strong finish to score a narrow but very good win. Madam Rouge settled in tenth place, between runners, improved nicely rounding the turn, hit the front at the 200m, only to be caught on the post for (head) second after running a bold race. Niccanova settled in 15th place, improved (between runners) at the turn and kept making good ground for a close-up third with Vega One coming from last at the home turn for (0.6 lengths) fourth. Ranier battled on strongly on the rails for (length) fifth while the favourite Dawn Passage worked from his outside barrier (18) and after racing outside the leader at a cracking tempo, he tired late for (2.3 lengths) seventh in a sound performance. Analysis: A shade unlucky here two weeks ago, Ballistic Boy found a lovely run through from the 800m and was too strong after grabbing the lead inside the 100m to record his maiden stakes success and fourth victory at start 15. He settled wide, back of midfield from the far turn getting closer to the rail down the back. At the 800m he gained quickly and found a lovely run, one off the fence at the 600m and just before straightening was poised to challenge. At the top of the straight he barged his way out then went after the leader. Inside the 300m he accelerated, levelled up at the 200m but at the 100m was travelling best and came away to score by a length and a half. Supergiant sat just back of the leader from the 1000m, shared the lead at the top of the straight and took a narrow lead at the 300m. Headed at the 200m he fought hard to the line yet was no match for the winner. Navy Cross led them to the home straight, was headed, fought back to share the lead then held on bravely for third. Man Of Sinn was back and widest at the top of the straight and finished well for fourth. [LJ]

Then followed: Platinum Bullet (AUS), Power Of St George (AUS) & Baby Blues (AUS), last.
Analysis: Fresh up, six months after taking out the Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m), Kay Cee won a good battle inside the last 100m to score her fifth win at start nine. She settled second last of the six runners but moved out widest approaching the last corner. In the straight she took forever to wind up, still a length in arrears at the 200m, a half length closer at the 100m, she wore the pacemaker down from the 50m to win by a head. Laverrod led soon after the start, carted them along to the top of the straight then kicked clear. He looked a solid chance at the 100m but was worn down while fighting hard. Karijini Aurora sat fourth turning in, ran up to second at the 200m and kept going well to hold third, a length from the winner. [LJ]

Then followed: Viridine (AUS), Jungle Edge (AUS), Handle The Truth (AUS), Jonker (AUS), Coruscate (AUS), Care To Think (AUS), Tactical Advantage (AUS) & Passage Of Time (AUS), last.
Analysis: Fresh up after a seven month break but with a winning trial under his belt, Classique Legend was never on the track and won very well for his fourth win and second stakes at start nine. From the outside barrier he began quickly but soon drifted to settle midfield, three deep. From the 600m he gained on the leaders and rounding into the straight widest, was travelling well. With a length to make up at the 300m he levelled up at the 200m, took over at the 100m and had them covered to the line by a half length. Southern Lad was fourth last at the 600m, tracked the winner into the straight, moved out from the 300m and kept on strongly doing his best work late for second. Snitz was second turning in, shared the lead at the 200m, gave the winner a brief fight then kept going gamely for third from Viridine who, from second last at the 400m, finished well for fourth. Then followed: Howwonderfullifeis (AUS), Sugar Boom (AUS), Kalik (AUS), Better Reflection (AUS), Bold Style (AUS), Say Haya (AUS), Seatonic (AUS) & Sukwhinder (AUS), last.
Analysis: Consistent Godolphin-raced filly Aquitaine took her record to four wins and four placings from nine starts in winning her first stakes race in good style here. She showed good pace before settling in third spot, tracking a fast pace before moving up (three deep) nearing the turn. She took the lead at the 200m and then went on to score quite impressively in the quick time of 56.16. Iced settled in second last place in the 11-runner field, improved (wide) on turning for home and kept making up good ground for second, staging a nice effort in this class. Niedorp had a good trip in fifth place, went to fourth at the 200m and then kept fighting on well for third. Howwonderfullifeis raced outside the leader and did well in holding on for (1.4 lengths) fourth, while Sugar Boom wilted late for (2.1 lengths) fifth after leading the field at a quick tempo. [KB]

VERDICT The Sir Michael Stoute-trained VIVIONN bumped intonext-time-out Irish St Leger winner Search For A Song when a
Listed runner-up at York last time out in August and she’s the type to scale greaterheights this season. Last October’s Group 3 winner Fanny Logan is very muchrespected for John Gosden, however. Manuela De Vega’s best form also bringsher into calculations.[Ben Hutton]

VERDICT Aidan O’Brien has won three of the past four runnings and couldwell be on the mark again courtesy of LOVE (nap), who is a
leading form contender on two Group 1 efforts at the end of last season whenwinning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and a good third to Quadrilateral in theFillies’ Mile here. The latter is unbeaten and clearly a major player but there is asuspicion that she will be better served by further than 1m this year, so Love can turnthe form around and win this. Quadrilateral is still next best ahead of Millisle, whoseCheveley Park win gives her a good form chance if she lasts out the 1m. If there is anoutsider involved it could be Under The Stars, a smart 2yo who should stay 1m.[Mel Cullinan]

VERDICT Curling Luxury has finished second over today’s trip on his lasttwo starts and, with very useful 10lb claimer Jerry Chau now
enlisted, is not opposed lightly. However, BRING IT ON has slipped to a verytempting mark and might be the answer. Little General drops in grade afterreaching the frame over 1m here last month and is also likely to be on the premises.

VERDICT It’s reasonable to assume that consistent 7yo Jade Fortune willbe on the premises again but one with fewer miles on the clock is
LEAP OF FAITH, who went close over C&D in January and moves back up to 1mafter a very respectable fourth over 7f here last month. Telecom Rocket andRoyal Racer are others to consider.

VERDICT Well-drawn 3yo Heza Beauty has shown more than enoughability to suggest he can win a race of this nature soon but he has
become rather frustrating and is not without risk. He is opposed with EPTIWINS,who was a very close second over 1m at Happy Valley last month and will arguablybe better suited by today’s shorter trip. All For St Paul’s is next on the list.

have a say in this if settling better but LOBO’S LEGEND is taken to claim a longoverdue first Hong Kong win. He races off the same mark as he did when keeping onwell over C&D last time, Joao Moreira takes over in the saddle and connections try asheepskin noseband for the first time.

interesting that Joao Moreira has ridden him in all five of his most recent starts butgets off to ride lightly weighted DECISIVE ACTION.
