President Hamilton welcomed members of the Senate to the first meeting of the academic year.

PRELIMINARY MATTERS

In Memoriam

As is customary at the first meeting of the academic year, General Counsel and Secretary of the Senate Terrance Nolan read the names of members of the University community who died during academic year 2017-18. The list of names is attached to these minutes as Exhibit A.

Review and Approval of the Minutes of the April 26, 2018 Meeting

Upon motion duly made and seconded, the minutes of the April 26, 2018 meeting were approved unanimously as presented.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

Michael McCaw reported that at its meeting on September 26th, the Executive Committee elected the 2018-2019 Senate Officers, appointed members of the Senate to serve on the Senate Standing Committees, and confirmed the issues charged to the Senate Standing Committees for this year. The items approved were included in the materials distributed to the Senate in advance of the meeting and are attached to these minutes as Exhibits B, C, and D, respectively. Mr. McCaw noted that the Senate materials also included copies of the three responses from Board Chair William Berkley and President Hamilton to the resolutions passed by the Senate in March with respect to student and faculty representation on the Board of Trustees and cooperation between Board and Senate committees.

Mr. McCaw said that the Executive Committee also discussed the long-standing Senate tradition of reading the names of students and members of the University’s faculty and administration who passed away during the preceding academic year at the first Senate meeting of the year. He reported that there was agreement amongst the members of the Executive Committee that it was important to continue this tradition of reflection at the beginning of the year by reading the names aloud.

Mr. McCaw reported that the Committee also discussed a student proposal about developing a process for members of the University community to request information from the University. In addition, President Hamilton highlighted for the Committee developments of note since the last meeting of the Senate including (i) state and city developments in the area of sexual misconduct, as well as institutional and individual cases in the news; (ii) efforts to develop University-wide expectations and understanding around the relationship between doctoral students and advisors; and (iii) NYU’s success after trial in a lawsuit alleging, among other things, failure to properly oversee employee retirement plans, which

is being appealed.

President Hamilton added that the responses from the Board to the Senate referenced by Mr. McCaw included a list of recommendations for a recurring set of engagements between Trustees and members of the NYU community. He noted that the Senate Committees would convene after the Senate meeting to organize for the year, after which meetings will begin to be set between the Senate Committees and Trustees. President Hamilton reported that the Board website has been updated and now includes a link to allow for members of the community to contact the Board.

COUNCIL REPORTS

Student Senators Council (SSC)

SSC Chair Hüsniye Çöğür acknowledged the great sense of loss the community was feeling following the death of a first-year student two days prior. She affirmed that the SSC is dedicated to prioritizing mental health and making sure students are aware of and take advantage of the wellness resources available to them at NYU.

Ms. Çöğür said that transparency is a student government priority and reported that the SSC recently passed a resolution about developing a process for members of the University community to request information from the University. She thanked the Administrative Management Council (AMC) for their feedback and collaboration on the resolution and said that the SSC is working on next steps.

The student government recently hosted a meet-and-greet event with administrators throughout the University, and Ms. Çöğür said that student government looks forward to continuing to build valuable connections with the broader University community this year.

Administrative Management Council

Mr. McCaw reported that the AMC held two assembly meetings during the summer. He also highlighted some of the committee activities that took place over the summer, including a blood drive held by the AMC Community Service Committee and the launch of the AMC Professional Development Committee’s fourth cohort in the AMC Mentoring Program.

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT

NYU by the Numbers

President Hamilton began his report with a look at NYU by the numbers. He said that although university rankings are imperfect, the metrics demonstrate elements of NYU’s progress the past few years. He shared the metrics from the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Rankings, QS World University Rankings, and Times Higher Ed World

Page 4: NEW YORK UNIVERSITY Minutes of a Stated Meeting of the ... · 10/4/2018  · Jacquelyn Taylor, Susan Waltzman, and Amanda Watson. Full-Time Continuing Contract Faculty Senators Council

University Rankings, noting that NYU has never ranked higher. NYU Langone is the #3 medical school in the country, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development is ranked #6 amongst education schools, and Wagner Graduate School of Public Service is in the top ten amongst public affairs schools. The School of Law also continues to rank in the top ten, and the Stern School of Business is ranked #13.

President Hamilton said that the strength of NYU is also apparent in the continued increase in applications to study at the University, as well as the quality and diversity of the incoming class this year. He reported that first-year student retention at NYU reached a record high of 94%, and the University’s goal is to reach 96% by 2020. For six-year retention, NYU is currently at 85% with a goal to reach 90% by 2026. President Hamilton said that NYU is proud of the success of its students this past year, including two recipients of the Rhodes Scholarship, one Truman Scholarship recipient, one Schwarzman Scholarship recipient, and 22 students and recent alumni selected as Fulbright Scholars for 2018-19. He noted that the Gallatin School of Individualized Study in particular has excelled in these global awards.

In terms of career outcomes, President Hamilton reported that 96.5% of graduates from the NYU Class of 2017 were working or in graduate school within six months of graduating. In addition, NYU topped Playbill’s “10 Most Represented Colleges on Broadway” list. President Hamilton recognized Tisch School of the Arts and Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development for their outstanding work in preparing students to succeed in the arts.

President Hamilton reported that faculty honors were also notable this past year, with two additional faculty members admitted to the National Academy of Sciences and four additional faculty members admitted to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He said research funding at NYU has increased significantly over the past few years, despite budgetary pressures from Washington, DC. He shared the Higher Education Research and Development survey data that is collected by the National Science Foundation every year to document universities’ research and development spending and other research trends. He noted NYU’s incredible progress over the past few years: NYU ranked #58 in research and development spending in 2006 and #23 in 2016, the most recent year where data is available. President Hamilton pointed out that the increase in funding is due in large part to the significant increase in the number of funding applications submitted by the University. He recognized Deputy Provost Cybele Raver for her hard work in this area.

President Hamilton reported that the NYU Momentum Campaign, which launched in 2013 to raise $1 billion exclusively dedicated to student scholarships, has now surpassed its goal. In addition, NYU raised more than $716 million this past year across the wider University, which is the second highest level of fundraising success in the history of NYU. President Hamilton thanked Interim Senior Vice President for University Development and Alumni Relations David Koehler, his team, and all the fundraising teams across the schools for the significant role they play at the University. He noted that continuing to increase alumni engagement will be crucial to NYU’s fundraising success.

President Hamilton said that NYU will continue to focus on affordability this year. The University’s efforts to keep tuition increases as low as possible is evident in the data published by The Chronicle of Higher Education, which shows that NYU is now ranked #27 in “sticker price” (tuition, fees, room and board) among four-year private schools for AY 2017-18. NYU was ranked #8 the previous year and #4 two years prior.

Although athletics are often overlooked at NYU, President Hamilton reported that the University’s table tennis team took first place in the national championships in April. Additional highlights from the past year include seven teams finishing in the Top 20 in the country, NYU's first ever individual men's swimming national championship, and men's and women's fencing ranked #1 in Division III and #12 overall in the nation. President Hamilton encouraged the University community to take advantage of this great part of student life by going to watch or getting involved in the University’s athletics programs.

Behind the Metrics: People

President Hamilton then shifted to the people behind the metrics. He highlighted four new members of Senior Leadership, including Julia Kempe, the Director of the NYU Center for Data Science; Jelena Kovačević, the Dean of the Tandon School of Engineering; Raghu Sundaram, the Dean of the Stern School of Business; and H. Austin Booth, the Dean of Libraries.

President Hamilton said that doctoral students are a critical part of academic activity at NYU and that the University will be convening a faculty committee led by Dean Phillip Harper to clearly identify faculty responsibilities to graduate students so that mentorship standards can be established across NYU.

President Hamilton said that the final report from the Being@NYU climate assessment will be disseminated and posted on the Being@NYU website very soon, and discussions will take place across the University. Senior Vice President for Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation and Chief Diversity Officer Lisa Coleman will also convene several committees to analyze the results and make recommendations for new initiatives and activities.

President Hamilton next highlighted progress of the Office of Work Life at NYU, with Grace Protos now on board in the role of Executive Director for the Office. NYU is putting in place new childcare subsidies starting in 2019. The University is also looking at flexibility around the rules for tenure clock stoppage to better fit the lives of faculty.

Behind the Metrics: Innovation

President Hamilton next presented on innovation at NYU. He said that the University has made significant progress this past year in strengthening the infrastructure for sciences and engineering, including creating a new space for physics at 726 Broadway, a new space for the Center for Neural Science, and improvements to the space for the Center for Brain Imaging. NYU is also currently renovating Roger’s Hall in Brooklyn as part of the Tandon School of Engineering, along with construction taking place at 370 Jay Street.

President Hamilton then highlighted NYU’s work in the areas of biomedical engineering and augmented reality and virtual reality. He reported that several floors are now open at 370 Jay Street, which will be NYU’s Center for Media, Technology and the Arts.

NYU has also seen growth in online learning, which allows the University to reach individuals who are unable to study in New York. President Hamilton shared a chart of online enrollment which demonstrated a steady increase over the past few years. Tandon School of Engineering and Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development have been particularly successful in launching online programs. President Hamilton noted that a section of NYU’s website now highlights the University’s online offerings for prospective students to understand their options.

President Hamilton said that the areas of humanities and social sciences also continue to be strong at NYU, and he highlighted several recent publications from NYU professors.

President Hamilton next presented on NYU’s Global Network. He said that a search is underway for the next Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi with Al Bloom’s upcoming retirement in 2019 after a decade of leadership. NYU Shanghai is in the midst of planning for a new building, which will allow for more students to study there. President Hamilton said that NYU is developing a global degree program working closely with a few key schools, giving students an opportunity to study at multiple sites. NYU is also focusing on strengthening its presence in Los Angeles. President Hamilton shared that he had the opportunity this summer to visit NYU’s Global Research Institute in Athens.

President Hamilton reported that cross-school initiatives will continue to be a focus this year to create communities of learning, research, and teaching across disciplines. He highlighted four examples of cross-school initiatives on urban, aging, inequality, and entrepreneurship.

Behind the Metrics: Impact

Finally, President Hamilton highlighted areas where NYU is having an impact. In regard to sustainability, NYU has committed to a 50% reduction of its carbon footprint between 2006 and 2025. President Hamilton noted that the 370 Jay Street building is LEED Platinum certified, which will result in significant energy savings. He next highlighted the College of Dentistry’s Oral Center for People with Disabilities, which will be a unique facility for providing dental treatment to people with physical, cognitive, acquired, and developmental disabilities, and the recently launched Veterans Future Lab, which is a start-up incubator that supports returning military veterans who wish to start businesses. President Hamilton also highlighted the NYU Prison Education Program, which provides men incarcerated at Wallkill Correctional Facility with an opportunity to earn an Associate of Arts Degree from NYU in Liberal Studies.

To conclude his presentation, President Hamilton said that the most important aspect of NYU’s impact is its students. He said that 17,000 people graduated in May in New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai, each of whom will go on to impact the world.
