How Easter Eggs Were Colored •Retaif stores sre preparing to

capitalize on an old tradition— the coloring of eggs.

For the last two weeks stores have displayed thousands of kits for decorating Easter eggs. This week these items will be exten­sively promoted and moved into the hands of amateur assistants of the Easter bunny.

In most stores are kits pro­duced by the Paas Dye Company, Newark, N. J., believed to be the oldest and largest company in the world manufacturing egg dyes ex­clusively. It was founded seventy* five years ago by the late William M. Townley, proprietor of a drug

. store. It is mm headed by his son, Philip B. Townley.

Some dye spilled on a spotless white marble counter and on his good business suit led the elder Townley into the packaged Easter egg dye business in 1879. For some time before that he had obliged customers by wrapping up at the counter a few cents worth of dye for coloring. [

In 1893 a way had been^ found to concentrate dye in tablets, and the modern Easter egg kit was developed. Prices of the Paas products ran^e from .10 to 39 cents at retail. The mosT expen­sive kit contains, in addition t«. twelve food coloring tablets, elev­en items* such as nest grass, egg-drying tray, cutouts, and a box that can be converted into an Easter basket.

Although the company's output is sold at retail within a period of two or three weeks, it keeps op­erating all year round. Starting shortly after Easter, it begins its planning, merchandising, sales promotion and production for next year's sales.

Probably the greatest - impetus received by the industry was the introduction many years ago of the practice of rolling decorated eggs on Easter Monday on the White House lawn.

The spilling incident, however, prompted him to relegate the dye jars to the basement, where nickel packets of dye were made up in the papers ordinarily used for me­dicinal powders.

In the Eighteen Nineties the company brought out calico and picture papers. These were the forerunners of the present color­ful transfer designs for egg deco­ration,
