New York City houses almost half of that with a population of almost8.1 million residents. New York City is by far the most populous city in the country. The next largest city is Los Angeles with 3.8 million people. Tennessee’s largest city is Memphis with 676 thousand inhabitants

The next largest city in New York State is Buffalo with 261 thousand residents. In comparison Knoxville has 185 thousand residents

Albany is the state capital because it was the location of the first Dutch settlement in New York – Fort Orange
