Note of the NightGnarly Varly – Goaltender Simeon Varlamov stopped 33 shots for the 10th shutout in Capitals playoff history and the second by a rookie. A few more notes on Varlamov, who leads the NHL (through Monday's games) with a 0.50 goals-against average and a .982 save percentage in the playoffs:– The fourth NHL goaltender to post a playoff shutout before he turned 21 (Harry Lumley, Patrick Roy, Carey Price)

– In road games (regular-season and playoffs) he is 4-0-0 with a 1.35 GAA and a .954 save percentage

– Has a shutout streak of 112:16 entering Game 4

– His combined regular-season and playoff numbers: 5-1-1, one shutout, .935 save percentage and a 1.88 GAA

Five More Notes No Media Person Should Be WithoutGamers – The Capitals are 14-13 all-time in playoff Game 4s, including a 7-6 record on the road and a 3-7 record when trailing in the series, 2-1.

Page 18: New York Rangers Playoff Notesrangers.nhl.com/ext/gamenotes/200809/042209_WSHNYR.pdf · New York Rangers Playoff Notes Wednesday, April 22, 2009 NHL Game #: 124 New York Rangers Team

Round of shooters – Washington has outshot the Rangers 110-78 in the series and fired at least 35 shots on goal in each game, including a series-high 40 in Game 3. The Rangers did not allow 35 shots on goal in three straight games all regular season. Washington has a 41-21 shot advantage in the first period of the three games.

Super Sasha – Alexander Semin's two-goal, one-assist effort in Game 3 gives him 12 points in 10 career playoff games, including six goals and 10 points in his last seven games. This season, stretching back to the regular-season, Semin has eight goals in the last eight games.

Nick of time – Nicklas Backstrom's three assists in Game 3 set a playoff career high for assists and points in a game. He now has 10 points in 10 playoff games. Backstrom's 66.7% faceoff percentage is the best in the NHL (entering Tuesday's games) after he won just 48.7% of his draws in the regular season (but 52.3% after the All-Star break).

Special something – Washington has killed off all 11 Ranger power plays since allowing two PPGs in Game 1. Meanwhile, the Capitals scored two PPGs in Game 3 for the second time in the series. Including the regular season, the Capitals have converted on 25.8% of their power plays against the Rangers this year (8-for-31).

More Caps NotesHoping for history – Washington, which last year became the first team in NHL history to make the playoffs after being 14th or 15th in its conference at midseason, is hoping to make some more history in this playoff series. Teams have trailed 2-0 in a best-of-seven series a total of 291 times and have come back to win the series on 37 occasions or 12.7% of the time. The Capitals have never pulled off such a comeback. Carolina and Edmonton both erased 2-0 deficits on their way to the 2006 Stanley Cup Final; 17 teams have gone up 2-0 in a playoff series since then and each has won the series.

Site of a comeback – The Capitals hope to climb back in the series at the site of one of the biggest comebacks in franchise history. Dec. 23 of this year Washington erased a 4-0 deficit to win, 5-4 in overtime, just the fourth time in franchise history that the Capitals came back from 4-0 to win and the first time since 1991. Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist, Nicklas Backstrom had three assists and Shaone Morrisonn, playing on his birthday, had the overtime winner. It was the only time the Rangers have ever lost after leading 4-0 at home.

Face it – Washington has won 58.6% of the faceoffs in the series, tops in the NHL.

8's stage – Alex Ovechkin led the Capitals in shots and hits in both Game 1 and 2. In Game 3 he assisted on the first two goals of the game and now shares the NHL lead with four assists in the playoffs. Ovechkin has had multiple-point games in six of the 10 playoff games he has played in his career. Last season against Philadelphia Ovechkin had the game-winning goal in his first playoff game, added another game-winner in Game 6 and finished tied for second in league scoring in round one with nine points (4g-5a) in 7 GP.

Fed reserve – Sergei Fedorov recorded an assist on Brooks Laich’s second period power play goal in Game 3, recording the 169th Stanley Cup playoff point of his NHL career in the process. Fedorov ranks 17th on the league’s all-time list in that department, just two points behind Peter Forsberg (171) for 16th on the all-time ledger.

First-timers – Washington's first two goals in Game 1 were the first playoff goals of Tomas Fleischmann and Viktor Kozlov's careers.

Three for one – Alex Ovechkin (13 points in 10 GP), Alexander Semin (12 points in 10 GP) and Nicklas Backstrom (10 points in 10 GP) are all averaging a point per game in their playoff careers. It's an admittedly small sample for that trio, but worth noting that Joe Sakic is the only NHL player with at least 50 playoff points who has a point per playoff game in his career.

Going Green – Mike Green, whose 31 goals in the regular season were eight more than any other NHL defenseman, had three more goals than any Rangers player in the regular season. Green has five goals against the Rangers in his career, including two overtime goals in 2007-08.

Style guys – This series pits the No. 3 scoring team in the NHL (Washington, 3.29 goals per game) against the No. 6 defensive team (New York, 2.58 goals against per game). Washington ranked tied for 19th on defense, while the Rangers finished 28th offensively.

There are similar dichotomies on special teams, where Washington's second-ranked power play (a club-record 25.2%) will face the best penalty kill in the league (87.8%). The Capitals scored on four of 15 power-play opportunities against the Rangers in the regular season (26.7%).

Back for more – The Capitals are back in the playoffs for the second year in a row, their first consecutive trips since 1999-00 and 2000-01. Whereas everyone who played for Washington in last year's playoffs was making their Capitals postseason debut, Brian Pothier, Jose Theodore and Simeon Varlamov are the only players to make their Capitals playoff debuts this year.

One-Timers– This marked the first season in franchise history in which Washington did not make a trade

– Washington faced New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella in the playoffs before, a six-game loss to Tampa Bay in the first round of 2003– Last season three Capitals scored their first playoff goals in their first playoff games: Eric Fehr, Alex Ovechkin and David Steckel– Sergei Fedorov, at 38 years old last spring, became the oldest player ever to score a playoff goal for Washington

– Donald Brashear is the only current Capital who faced the Rangers in the playoffs prior to this series (6 GP)

Washington Capitals

Series History vs. NYRPlayoff HistoryWashington and the New York Rangers have met four times in the playoffs, all while the two teams were members of the Patrick Division. Each team has won two series and, with their Game 1 win, the Rangers hold a 13-12 advantage in games.

1994 Eastern Conference Semifinals: NYR wins, 4-1. The Rangers averaged four goals per game in the series and took a 3-0 lead against a Washington team coached by Jim Schoenfeld, the current Rangers interim assistant coach. New York closed out the series with a 4-3 win in Game 5.1991 Patrick Division Semifinals: WSH wins, 4-2. The Capitals bounced back from a 2-1 deficit in the series to win three straight, including Game 5 in New York, when Dino Ciccarelli scored the overtime winner. Don Beaupre outdueled Mike Richter in goal.1990 Patrick Division Finals: WSH wins, 4-1. John Druce had nine goals in five games, a Capitals playoff series record, as Washington won four straight to advance to the Wales Conference Finals for the first time in team history. Druce, fittingly, scored the overtime goal in Game 5, as both of the last two games were decided in OT.1986 Patrick Division Finals: NYR wins, 4-2. Washington scored 14 goals in Games 2 and 3, but John Vanbiesbrouck held them to eight goals in the next three games as the Rangers won three in a row to erase a 2-1 Capitals series lead.

Regular Season HistoryWashington leads the series, 85-74-19-5, through 182 meetings. The Capitals are 49-31-9-4 at home, including a 12-1-0-2 record in the Rangers' last 15 visits.

This Year's SeriesNov. 8 at Washington: WSH 3, NYR 1. Washington got goals from Brooks Laich, Tom Poti and Alexander Semin, while Brent Johnson made 28 saves including a stop on a Chris Drury penalty shot as the Capitals posted a 3-1 win.Dec. 23 at NY Rangers: WSH 5, NYR 4 OT. The Capitals came back from a 4-0 deficit for just the fourth time in team history (and first since 1991), winning on Shaone Morrisonn's overtime goal at Madison Square Garden. Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist to spark the comeback.Jan. 3 at Washington: WSH 2, NYR 1. Washington scored on the power play (Mike Green) and shorthanded (Alex Ovechkin) to win its fifth straight against the Rangers, while Jose Theodore stopped 21 of 22 shots.Feb. 11 at NY Rangers: NYR 5, WSH 4 SO. A back-and-forth game saw eight goals scored through two periods, but none in the third or overtime. Ryan Callahan got the deciding goal in a four-round shootout.

Series Notes– Washington's comeback from 4-0 down to win 5-4 on Dec. 26 snapped a seven-game losing streak at MSG (0-6-1)– The Capitals won five in a row in the series before Feb. 11's shootout loss, matching their longest winning streak in history against the Rangers– Bruce Boudreau is 5-0-1 against the Rangers in the regular season in his head coaching career – Mike Green has five career goals against the Rangers, two in overtime– The Capitals have two former Rangers on their roster: Michael Nylander and Tom Poti

New York RangersHead Coach

John Tortorella

Notes: Is in his first season with the Rangers after being named the 34th Head Coach in the team's 83-year history on February 23, 2009. He returns to the organization after serving as Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning for seven seasons. Under his guidance, Tampa Bay compiled a 239-222-36-38 record in 535 games. He led the Lightning to four consecutive Stanley Cup Playoff appearances, including two Southeast Division Championships in 2002-03 and 2003-04. In 2003-04, Tortorella guided Tampa Bay to a franchise record 46 wins and 106 points, and went on to capture the club’s first Stanley Cup Championship. He was awarded the Jack Adams Award as the National Hockey League’s top coach following that season.

Tortorella joined Tampa Bay following a one-year stint with the Rangers in 1999-2000 where he was an Assistant Coach and served as Head Coach for the final four games of the season. Prior to joining the Rangers, he spent two seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Phoenix Coyotes. He joined Phoenix during the 1997-98 season, after spending the previous eight seasons with the Buffalo Sabres organization. Tortorella served as an Assistant Coach with the Sabres from 1989-90 to 1994-95 and as Head Coach with their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Rochester Americans, during the 1995-96 and 1996-97 campaigns. He guided the club to the Calder Cup championship in 1995-96.
