SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. —Tsubasa Tomii buckled down after allowing two firstinning home runs andJapan hit three homers in the fourth and won the Little League World Series title with a 122 victory over Lufkin, Texas, on Sunday.
Keitaro Miyahara laced a tworun triple with two outs in the second to tie it at 2, and hit a solo shot in the fourth after fouling a ball off his foot earlier in the atbat. Daisuke Hashimoto and Natsuki Yajima also homered in the fourth.
Tomii cruised through the final fourinnings and finished with nine strikeouts.
“We were thrilled after we won theJapanese region before we came here,”Miyahara said through an interpreter. “But now getting to this level and becoming the Little League World Series champions this year, it can’t get any better than this.”
After starter Chip Buchanan waspulled in the fourth inning, Lufkin had trouble getting outs and the game was stopped in the fifth inning after Japan
went ahead by 10 on Yajima’s single to right field to score Seiya Arai.
The title marks the 11th time a teamfrom Japan has won the Little League World Series, five of which have come in the last eight years. Tokyo Kitasuna, the club representing Japan this season, has won three of the last six.
Japan had allowed only one run inthe tournament heading into Sunday’s game, but that changed when ChandlerSpencer crushed the first pitch over the leftcenter field fence.
Hunter Ditsworth cracked an oppositefield homer down the rightfield line to put Lufkin up 20 with one out in the first. Those were the only runs they produced.
“Just like I told them, I’ll take fullcredit for that,” Lufkin manager Bud Maddux said of the loss. “We didn’t make some adjustments that we should have. You can’t hang your head because [Japan] beat you. They’re a great baseball team, but we are, too.”

SPORTS SHORTSMLB: Harvey may change plans for Astros-Rangers series
The Astros and Rangers didn’t travel to Houston as planned after their games Sunday in California because of the damage done by Hurricane Harvey. The teams had been scheduled to start a threegame series against each other in Houston. Instead, both clubs were set to fly to Dallas while a decision was made on when and where the series will be played.lDodgers ace Clayton Kershaw will start Friday against the Padres, the team
announced. He has been sidelined since July 24 with a lower back strain.l In Cleveland, Yan Gomes hit a grand slam to highlight the Indians’ nine
run second inning against two Kansas City rookie lefthanders as Cleveland completed a threegame shutout sweep of the Royals with a 120 win.l In Philadelphia, rookie Rhys Hoskins homered for the fifth straight
game and made a diving catch to start a gamechanging triple play in the fifth inning, leading the Phillies to a 63 victory over the Cubs.l In Toronto, Byron Buxton homered three times and set a career high
with five RBIs, helping the Twins beat the Blue Jays 72. Buxton had four hits, scored four runs and stole a base. l In Boston, Adam Jones and Trey Mancini hit backtoback RBI doubles
in the first inning, and the Orioles held on to beat the Red Sox 21.
NFL: Browns name rookie Kizer their starting QBRookie quarterback DeShone Kizer will start for the Browns in their
season opener against Pittsburgh. He is the 27th different quarterback to start for Cleveland since 1999. The former Notre Dame star won the job over Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler.l In Nashville, Tenn., Mike Glennon capped an opening 96yard drive with
a 1yard touchdown pass to Dion Sims, as the Bears beat the Titans 197. Bears receiver Cameron Meredith was carted off late in the first quarter with what the teams suspects is an ACL injury in his left knee.
ETC.: Devils agree to deal with college hockey’s best playerThe Devils landed college hockey’s top player by agreeing to sign defen
seman Will Butcher to a twoyear, $1.85 million contract, the team announced. The agreement comes after the University of Denver player became a free agent by turning down an opportunity to sign with the Avalanche before a deadline passed on Aug. 15. lTina Charles scored 22 points and the Liberty cruised to a 9262 win over
the Sky at Madison Square Garden for their eighth consecutive victory. The win clinched at least the fourseed in the playoffs and a firstround bye for the Liberty.l In Ottawa, Ontario, Michelle Wie withdrew before the final round of
the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open to have emergency surgery to remove her appendix. Sung Hyun Park shot 7under 64 for a twoshot victory.
