FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Zach Sudfeld always figured he'd be the guy avoiding tackles, not making them.

But the New York Jets backup tight end has been consistently taking down kick returners this season, leading the team with 15 total special teams tackles. Not bad for a guy who, as far as he can remember, last regularly tackled someone in his high school days.

"Oh, man, it feels great," Sudfeld said Friday. "When you make a good tackle, it's like, 'Man, this is awesome.' I can see why people love playing defense so much. It's a lot of fun."

At 6-foot-7 and 260 pounds, Sudfeld — nicknamed "Sasquatch" by coach Rex Ryan — isn't exactly the prototypical special teams player.

"You just don't see it from that body type too much," said linebacker and special teams standout Nick Bellore. "Not from a guy that tall, that big."

Sudfeld has a nose for the ball carrier, though, and he has become one of the biggest surprises this season for special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey.

"When I got here last spring and I saw him on tape," McGaughey said, "if you would have told me that that guy would be our lead tackler this year, and if he was sitting right there, I would say the same thing — and I've said this in the meetings — it's unbelievable."

Sudfeld is third on the depth chart at tight end behind Jeff Cumberland and rookie Jace Amaro and has just two catches for 35 yards this season. While he works for more snaps on offense, Sudfeld has made himself a valuable part of the special teams unit.

"He's starting to become more of a leader," McGaughey said. "He's more vocal. He has more confidence because he has been making plays. The one guy that I would say that really shocked me is Zach."

And, it came about almost by chance.

Sudfeld didn't play special teams in high school and rarely did so in college at Nevada. He had some spot duty as a blocker on punts last season, his first with the Jets, but didn't see much time on special teams in the preseason this year. But in the season opener against Oakland, McGaughey needed someone to cover a kickoff and Sudfeld was sent in.

He assisted on the tackle — his first since he played some linebacker at Modesto Christian High School in California.

"I kind of just jumped out there and no one blocked me," Sudfeld said. "No one accounted for me, so I was in on the tackle. From then on, it was like, 'Hey, I could do this.' I don't have much technique, though. I just try to grab them and wrap 'em up somehow."

It's not pretty all the time, with some awkward-looking arm tackles and near-body slams, so it makes for some laughs among the other special teamers who tackle for a living. But, it gets the job done.

"We don't really mess with it because some of the ways he gets guys down is pretty creative," Bellore said. "I mean, he had one last week where he kind of got his arm in between a guy's feet and tripped him up. It's been working for him."

Sudfeld has spent extra time with assistant defensive backs coach Brian Smith working on tackling techniques, and he also asks questions of teammates Bellore and rookie linebacker Trevor Reilly.

"I think they all know that it's not just second nature for me," Sudfeld said. "It's a credit to a lot of the other guys making plays in there, so the returners kind of bounce out to me and I'm just kind of there to clean up."

So, if the tight end stuff doesn't work out, perhaps Sudfeld could think about a position switch.

"I don't know, man," he said, laughing. "You see guys like Calvin Pace and David Harris and Quinton Coples, and those guys are pretty spectacular at what they do. I don't think I'd be a very good defensive end or something like that in this league."

But, making 15 tackles — including eight solo — isn't too shabby.

"Really, 15? Wow," Sudfeld said, smiling. "I didn't know that. That's a lot, man. To really be contributing, you go into meetings and you feel like you can really provide a service to the team. It's just great."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Percy Harvin is ready to go, and there's no question in his mind he'll be playing Sunday.

No matter what the injury report says.

The New York Jets wide receiver is listed as questionable to play against the Titans in Tennessee on Sunday as he recovers from a sprained left ankle. Harvin sat out team drills Wednesday and Thursday, but was a limited participant Friday.

"Felt pretty good," Harvin said. "I should be ready to roll. I practiced. I felt fine, and I expect to be on the field."

Harvin, injured late in the fourth quarter at Minnesota last Sunday, had six catches for 124 yards and a TD against his former team. He was in a boot after the game, and coach Rex Ryan was stunned Harvin was even able to practice this week.

"The fact that he's out there is pretty amazing," Ryan said. "He had a significant ankle injury, albeit a low-ankle, but for him, this is a quick heal. It's unbelievable how fast he's healing from it.

"Will he be able to go or not? I'm still not sure."

Harvin will likely be a game-time decision, while defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson is doubtful after missing two games with turf toe. While Wilkerson has made progress, it appears unlikely that he'll play. Ryan said Wilkerson might not even make the trip to Tennessee.

Safety Antonio Allen (hand) is questionable, while tight end Jace Amaro and linebacker Trevor Reilly are probable after recovering from concussions.

In his six games since being acquired from Seattle, Harvin has provided the offense with a bit of a boost with 25 catches for 306 yards. He has also rushed for 99 yards on 19 carries, and served as the primary kick returner.

Harvin tested his ankle during practice Friday, making cuts on the field as if he were playing in a game.

"I told all the coaches it felt good," he said. "They said I looked good. I fully expect to play without any limitations."

While Ryan has tempered expectations for Harvin's availability, the wide receiver has maintained his optimism.

"That's what he's been telling me the whole week," Ryan said. "I'm like, 'He's crazy.' And then he goes back out there today, and there he is. And he goes, 'Nah, I'm feeling good.'"

Harvin is also enjoying his time in New York despite the team's 2-11 record, and would "definitely" like to continue playing for the Jets beyond this season. He has four years left on his contract, with a base salary of $10.5 million for next season, so it's possible New York might want to renegotiate that deal which he signed with Seattle.

"I feel at home here," he said. "I'm comfortable with all the players. I like the vibe around here, absolutely. I just overall love the whole organization."

Harvin came to the Jets with the reputation of being a bit of a malcontent, a player who could disrupt the harmony in the locker room. Instead, he has been an ideal citizen since joining the Jets, and has become a favorite of his teammates during his short time with them.

"This is the guy that we see since he's been here," Ryan said. "The respect he's already built with his current teammates is really impressive, and here's another reason. We're voting for the Ed Block Courage award and he got a ton of votes, and he's only been with us for six weeks. I think that just shows you what his current team thinks of him."

Geno Smith can hear the chatter. And he knows it will only continue.

While he and his teammates talk about playing for pride each week, fans have shifted their focus to the future. This season is a lost cause for the Jets, an organization that not too long ago seemed like a franchise on the rise. But after failed promises of "sustainable success" -- and a lack of improvement through the draft -- many fans have turned their attention to offseason changes, namely at quarterback.

The Jets are within striking distance of the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft. But so are the Tennessee Titans -- and more than just a win will be on the line for these two 2-11 teams Sunday in Nashville.

Both organizations are in the quarterback market, and Oregon's Marcus Mariota and Florida State's Jameis Winston are the assumed top targets. But to have the best chance of snagging the top pick ahead of the Titans, Bucs, Jaguars and Raiders -- all of whom are 2-11 -- the Jets might have to lose out the rest of the way.

And that's exactly what Smith is trying to avoid.

"I hate to talk about the fans or say anything negative about the fans, but I don't think that should be their attitude," he said. "The fans should want to see the team win no matter what."

If recent history is any indication, Jets fans thinking about the future might get what they want Sunday. The Jets are 0-2 in their past two games in Tennessee, thanks to poor quarterback play. Smith committed four turnovers in their 38-13 loss to the Titans last year, including three in the first half that resulted in 21 points. And in 2012, Mark Sanchez turned the ball over five times in a 14-10 loss at LP Field.

"We got our butt kicked real bad the last two times," said Muhammad Wilkerson, who is doubtful for the game because of turf toe. "So hopefully we'll get a win on Sunday."

But if they don't, the Jets presumably will be one step closer to a higher draft pick. And that's a good thing, right?

Not if you ask the players.

"One draft pick isn't going to change things," linebacker Calvin Pace said. "If you end up with a high draft pick, that guy still has to get seasoned and become a pro. Very few times you see guys come in and change a franchise . . . So if that's your thinking, that's your thinking on the outside. But it's a little bit more to it than that."

The draft, of course, is an inexact science. Besides the Indianapolis Colts, who hit a home run with Peyton Manning in 1998 and with Andrew Luck in 2012, few teams have hit paydirt in recent years with their first-round quarterback selections. And according to ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr., there isn't a franchise quarterback in the 2015 crop of quarterbacks either.

Even if Mariota goes No. 1 overall, as expected, "he's not Andrew Luck," Kiper said. "He's not in that elite of elite category. Could he be really good? If you're patient with him, if you wait and let him evolve, and we don't write him off as a bust early on, then you're fine."

The Jets, however, need an immediate solution to their quarterback woes. And Smith knows many fans -- and even members of the organization -- aren't convinced he's the answer.

"I don't have any feelings toward it, really," Smith said of fans who want to see him replaced. "You have guys that support you, you have guys that don't. That's just the way it is . . . The only thing that I can try and do is, those that don't believe in me, try to win them over by playing well."

But in the meantime, fans and the Jets' front office will be keeping an eye on 2015.

Chris Johnson looks to have a big game against his former team in Tennessee (Kimberley Martin) Newsday December 13, 2014

Football is a business. But for Chris Johnson, this is personal.

After six seasons, nearly 8,000 rushing yards and 58 total touchdowns, the Tennessee Titans deemed him disposable last offseason. And he'd love nothing more than to show his former team that he's still got it.

"Of course I want to go out there and tear it up and show them what they missed out on, make them regret it," Johnson said as he and the Jets prepared for Sunday's game in Nashville. "But I'm not going to go into the game and try to make it me versus them."

The competitor in Johnson, however, already is gearing up for a return to his old stamping grounds. His tenure in Tennessee was littered with highlight-reel clips and breakout performances. A three-time Pro

Bowler, Johnson rushed for 2,006 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2009, earning the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award and his first and only All-Pro selection.

"I had some of the best seasons of my career down in Tennessee," he said on a conference call this past week. "I'm glad they gave me the opportunity to make my dream come true. But it kind of ended a little ugly."

After the Titans cut him in April, he signed a two-year deal with the Jets. He's scheduled to earn a base salary of $3.5 million next season, but it's unclear if the Jets plan to bring him back in 2015.

"I wasn't given a reason,'' Johnson said of his release from Tennessee. "I feel like I did all the right things. I've never really been a vocal leader, but I always led by example. I played every game no matter how hurt I was. I had a torn meniscus my last year, and I think I only sat out two practices and played the whole season. So I'm not really sure."

The Jets still believed he could be a game-changer. Rex Ryan had watched helplessly from the sideline as Johnson torched his defense for 122 yards on 22 carries in the Titans' 14-10 win on Monday Night Football in 2012. The running back -- who paid tribute to the 26 victims in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting by writing their names on his cleats that night, only three days after the tragedy -- also broke off a 94-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that night.

Ryan jokingly said, "I thought about tackling him myself, but I couldn't get there."

"Somebody messed up," Calvin Pace said with a smile. "Seriously. Somebody messed up and he went 94. But he's always been a home run threat, a guy who will take a run and make it a touchdown, where a lot of guys will make it a 20-, 30-yard run."

Johnson has had a relatively quiet year for the Jets, aside from his lone 100-yard game of the year -- 105 yards on 17 carries against the Dolphins on Dec. 1. But though Johnson primarily has been used as Chris Ivory's backup, Pace still believes he has big-play ability.

"Yeah, he's still got it in him," he said, adding that the coaching staff likely has devised some specific plays to get Johnson going Sunday. "Hopefully he can have a good day."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The labels following Percy Harvin around these days are a lot different from the ones that plagued him when he joined the Jets six weeks ago. He's gone from divisive force to a player coach Rex Ryan calls "amazing" and "impressive" -- and maybe just a little bit crazy, but in a good way.

That's because though Harvin suffered a sprained ankle in Sunday's loss and missed practice as late as Wednesday, he was out there Friday morning, going through all his walk-throughs and a few team plays. Afterward, he insisted he can and will play against the Titans on Sunday.

No matter that anything he does likely will be window dressing on a 2-11 season, "I expect to be on the field," he said.

And now here's the crazy part: It just might work out.

"That's what he's been telling me the whole week," Ryan said about his wide receiver's consistent resistance to the notion that he might sit. "I think he's crazy and then he goes back out there and hey, there he is. He's doing good.''

Though Harvin is listed as questionable for Sunday, he said he felt no discomfort during practice and expects to handle a full load, noting, "I did pretty much all my cuts that I think I would have to do in a game. I should be ready to roll."

Understandably, Ryan was much more cautious.

"You're not going to put a player out there that can harm himself," he said. "The fact that this guy has been adamant about it and he was actually running some, cutting a little, it's been impressive, to say the least."

In a nightmarish season for the Jets, Harvin has been something of a dream. On Thursday, special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey called him a game-changer, and he's shown himself to be consistent and adaptable. He has 16 kickoff returns for 443 yards, 25 receptions for 306 yards and 848 all-purpose yards since joining the Jets.

Harvin's attitude has gone a long way toward turning around his reputation. He said he's enjoying his teammates, "[loves] the whole organization" and wants to be there next year.

"I feel at home here," he said, and that bad baggage (there are at least two known instances in which Harvin got into physical altercations with teammates on the Seahawks) could become a thing of the past. Especially if he keeps impressing the people around him.

"I knew he was doing everything possible so he could try to play," Ryan said, "but this is over the top."

FLORHAM PARK — The locker room was all but deserted.

Most of the Jets' players had scattered after Friday's practice. Reporters were being herded out.

But Pery Harvin casually sat at his locker, running a hand over his closely shorn hair and smiling.

Friday, after all, is haircut day for the receiver, and he was relaxed.

Even though he's listed as questionable for Sunday with a badly sprained left ankle when the Jets (2-11) face the Titans (2-11) in Tennessee, he had no concerns.

"I told all the coaches it felt good," Harvin said after practicing for the first time this week, albeit in limited snaps. "They said I looked good. I fully expect to play without any limitations."

Harvin completed some running and cutting, and declared himself "ready to roll."

But coach Rex Ryan is not so optimistic.

"The fact that he's out there is pretty amazing," Ryan said. "He had a significant ankle injury, albeit it's a low ankle. It's unbelievable how fast he's healing from it.

"Will he be able to go or not? I'm still not sure. But I've been impressed."

Of course, there's more to this than just one game — or even the Jets' final three games — for the 5-foot-11, 184-pound receiver.

Harvin, 26, has four years remaining on his contract, including $10.5 million in 2015 and $9.9 million in 2016. But the deal is not guaranteed, so the Jets could release him after the season with no salary cap implications. And it is doubtful he would command a similar amount on the market.

So in essence, Harvin was handed a nine-game audition with the Jets when Seattle traded him — and his not-inconsiderable personal baggage — in October for a conditional draft pick.

In six games in New York, he has impressed Ryan with his work ethic and demeanor. He has recorded 25 receptions for 306 yards and a touchdown, and 19 carries for 99 rushing yards.

His best game came last week in Minnesota when he compiled six catches for 124 yards and that touchdown.

Whether that is enough to fulfill John Idzik's prediction that Harvin was a "potential coup" will be decided by the general manager — or his successor. The Jets could keep Harvin's contract, renegotiate or cut him.

Harvin has made it no secret he wants to remain with the Jets. Obviously his contract plays a healthy part in that.

"Definitely. I feel at home here," he said. "I'm comfortable with all the players. I like the vibe around here. Absolutely.

"I just overall love the whole organization."

Harvin is just one of many decisions the organization needs to make this off-season, beginning with the job statuses of Idzik and Ryan, and what to do at quarterback.

In his brief time here, Harvin has not been anything approaching the malcontent he was reported to be, who refused to reenter a game and had physical altercations with Seattle teammates.

"The respect that he's already built with his current teammates is really, really impressive," Ryan said.

Harvin even earned "a ton of votes" for the NFL's Ed Block Courage Award, according to Ryan, despite his short tenure.

"It just shows you what his current team thinks of him," he added

Whether Harvin's stay will extend beyond nine games remains to be seen, just like his status for Sunday.

"I don't see how" he can play a full game, Ryan said, "but I never thought he'd be able to practice right now."

INJURY REPORT: Defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson (turf toe) is doubtful despite practicing again on a limited basis. Ryan said Wilkerson may not travel with the team to Tennessee. … Safety Antonio Allen (hand) is questionable despite practicing Friday on a limited basis for the first time this week. … Tight end Jace Amaro (concussion) is probable. … Tennessee tackles Taylor Lewan (ankle) and T Michael Oher (toe) are doubtful.

FLORHAM PARK -- Breno Giacomini knows the importance of finding the right quarterback. So he sort of understands why Jets fans crave a high pick in next year's draft, to give them a shot at Oregon's Marcus Mariota and/or Jameis Winston.

The 2-11 Jets are currently slotted fourth in the draft order. They are one of five 2-11 teams. They face another of those five, the Titans, on Sunday in Nashville, Tenn.

The Titans, who probably also will be in the market for a quarterback, are currently slotted second. Another quarterback-needy team, Tampa Bay, is slotted first.

The Jets are going to draft relatively high. How high remains to be seen. With three games remaining, Giacomini doesn't quite see eye-to-eye with fans who want the Jets to lose out, in order to finish 2-14, and be in contention for Mariota and/or Winston.

"I've never looked at it that way, so I would disagree with the fans that feel like that," said Giacomini, the Jets' right tackle. "They have their opinion. They're looking down the street, to the future.

"Is there a big difference between the fifth pick and the seventh pick? Probably not."

The obvious difference for the Jets, if they wind up behind two quarterback-needy teams in the draft order, will be deciding whether to trade up for a higher draft pick, or address the quarterback position in free agency or with a trade.

Quarterback is the NFL's most valuable position, but Giacomini disagrees with the notion that one high draft pick will automatically and immediately reverse a franchise's fortunes.

"One guy?" he said. "What is he going to do? Play offense, defense and special teams? If you can name that guy, we'll take him."

Giacomini won a Super Bowl in Seattle last season with quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson, a second-year pro last year, was a third-round draft pick, and the sixth quarterback selected in 2012. (Wilson also had a lot of other really good players around him with the Seahawks, who fielded the NFL's best defense in 2013.)

"He's a classic example," Giacomini said. "Do you need a first-round quarterback to go to the Super Bowl? No, you don't. I did it last year. I don't think you need a big first-round guy to do anything, really.

"But I get it from a fan standpoint. I get what they're seeing or what they want. But I don't look at it that way. They're entitled to their opinion. I can see why. They want to build through the draft. If a fan is that interested, he's probably a pretty loyal fan, which is a good thing. But it's not in my control and I don't worry about stuff like that."

Giacomini was drafted by the Packers in 2008, the first year starting for Aaron Rodgers, the 24th overall pick in 2005, and the second quarterback drafted that year, behind Alex Smith at No. 1. Rodgers is now widely considered to be the NFL's top quarterback. (And by the way, the Packers went 6-10 in Rodgers' first year starting. He is 62-22 since.)

"I've seen it twice," Giacomini said of playing with quarterbacks who weren't high first-round picks, yet ended up winning Super Bowls.

On Thursday, the Jets' veteran strong-side linebacker, Calvin Pace, also questioned the impact one high draft pick could have on a franchise.

He and Giacomini could have a point, in regard to Mariota and Winston. ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said that neither Mariota nor Winston strikes him as a potential franchise-changing, immediate-impact quarterback, along the lines of 2012 top pick Andrew Luck. But Kiper, whose analysis is not gospel, did say he expects the Jets to pick Mariota or Winston.

If the Jets draft Mariota or Winston, Giacomini will view the new quarterback's arrival with the skepticism he uses for all rookies, who face a steep learning curve in the NFL.

"I would tell you what I call rookies, but I can't say it out loud, for a reason," Giacomini said with a smile. "They're rookies for a reason. So it takes time."

FLORHAM PARK -- Among the Jets' many offseason decisions -- regarding their quarterback, head coach and general manager, most prominently -- there is also the not-so-small matter about what to do with wide receiver Percy Harvin.

Should the Jets pick up his hefty contract for next season? Or should they try to renegotiate with him? Do they even want him back?

The answer to that last question depends on the Jets' head coach/general manager tandem in 2015, and whether their current GM, John Idzik, is still employed by the organization.

Harvin on Friday answered at least one question about next season. He said he wants to continue playing for the Jets.

"Definitely," he said. "I feel at home here. I'm comfortable with all the players. I like the vibe around here. Absolutely. I just overall love the whole organization."

Of course, this is what you'd expect Harvin to say when asked if he wants to return to the Jets. But he certainly could have dodged the question and said he was only thinking about this week, and wanted to wait until after the season to speak about the future.

Harvin simply saying he wants to play for the Jets in 2015 will not make it so. He has four years remaining on his contract, with base salaries of $10.5, $9.9, $9.95 and $11.15 million due to come his way from 2015-18. None of that money is guaranteed, so the Jets could cut him lose after this season with no future repercussions to their salary cap.

To date, he has given the Jets no glaring reason to definitively say they don't want him around next season. He has performed solidly on the field, and gotten along with his teammates in the locker room -- something that was a concern about Harvin, considering his fights with Seahawks teammates.

The Jets acquired Harvin in an October trade with Seattle, for a modest price, which is why Idzik said the trade could be "a potential coup." If Harvin is on the Jets' roster in 2015, they will give Seattle a fourth-round draft pick. If not, they will send a sixth-rounder to Seattle. It was a low-risk move for Idzik, one that allowed him to essentially have Harvin audition for a 2015 roster spot during the Jets' final nine games.

Harvin has played well, but well enough to earn $10.5 million next year? The average yearly value of Harvin's contract ($12.849 million) currently ranks third among wide receivers. For all his talent, Harvin is not one of the NFL's top three receivers.

He has just one touchdown catch in 2014. He is coming off his best game of the season, last week in Minnesota: six catches for 124 yards and a touchdown. He sprained his ankle in that game, but could still play this Sunday at the Titans.

The 2-11 Jets have three games left for Harvin to show them they ought to keep him. A potential front-office overhaul is a mitigating factor. But it should be clear to anybody making decisions about the Jets' 2015 roster that Harvin provides a much-needed downfield threat, to take coverage attention away from receiver Eric Decker.

How much are the Jets willing to pay Harvin to fill that role? Just seven NFL receivers have contracts with an average yearly value of $10 million or more. Harvin seems extremely unlikely to command $10.5 million for 2015 on the open free agent market. This could help the Jets' chances of seeing him agree to a renegotiated deal.

Though Harvin hasn't put up monster numbers in his time with the Jets (25 catches, 306 yards and one touchdown in six games), he could be an asset to this team next season. Plus, a better quarterback than Geno Smith might help boost Harvin's stats.

For his part, Harvin said he isn't concerning himself with the last three games of his Jets tryout -- his final chances to demonstrate his value to this organization.

"I don't really worry about what's to come or anything like that," he said. "I'm just out here playing hard, and everything will take care of itself."

If Jets owner Woody Johnson opts for a complete shakeup, and fires both coach Rex Ryan and Idzik, the Harvin trade could still end up being a coup, particularly if the Jets get Harvin to lower his salary for 2015. But another general manager would reap the benefits of one of Idzik's wiser moves.

FLORHAM PARK -- Jets wide receiver Percy Harvin continued to maintain Friday, as he had earlier in the week, that he would play in Sunday's game at the Titans.

And now, coach Rex Ryan, previously pessimistic about Harvin's chances of getting on the field, thinks it might happen after all.

Harvin, who sustained a low ankle sprain in last week's loss at Minnesota, is listed as questionable for the Titans game and will be a game-time decision, according to Ryan.

Meanwhile, defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (turf toe) is doubtful for this game, which would be his third consecutive missed game.

Harvin did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. He was limited Friday in practice. Yet he did enough Friday to bolster his confidence that he will not only participate in Sunday's game, but also not have his snap count limited at all by this injury.

"I went through all the walk-throughs," Harvin said of his Friday practice. "Had a little bit of team plays each period. Felt pretty good. I should be ready to roll. I practiced. I felt fine. I expect to be on the field. I did today pretty much all my cuts that I think I would have to do during the game, as far as coming out of my breaks. I felt pretty good. I told all the coaches it felt good. They said I looked good. I fully expect to play without any limitations."

Ryan isn't so sure about that "without any limitations" part, regarding how much action Harvin would be able to handle, if he does in fact play.

"I don't see how (Harvin plays most of the game), but I never thought he'd be able to practice right now," Ryan said.

Ryan said Harvin's quick healing has surprised him.

"The fact that he's out there is pretty amazing," Ryan said. "He had a significant ankle injury, albeit it's a low ankle. But for him, this is a quick heal. Unbelievable how fast he's healing from it. Will he be able to

go or not? I'm still not sure. But I've been impressed with him. I knew he was doing everything possible, so he could try to play. But this is like over the top. Even his teammates recognize that."

Harvin hasn't just told reporters that he expects to play Sunday.

"That's what he's been telling me the whole week," Ryan said. "I'm like, 'He's crazy.' And then he goes back out there today. There he is. And he goes, 'Nah, I'm feeling good.' Obviously, you're not going to put a player out there (in a game) that can harm himself, but the fact that this guy has been adamant about it, and he was actually running some (Friday), cutting a little, it's been impressive, to say the least."

Ryan said that before Sunday's game, he would lean on the advice of the Jets' medical staff, to determine if Harvin will play, because Harvin is so bullish about wanting to participate in the game. Ryan wants an unbiased opinion from the trainers.

While Harvin will be a game-time decision, it seems the Jets have already ruled out Wilkerson. Ryan didn't sound optimistic Friday about Wilkerson's chances of playing in Nashville. Last week, Ryan said this game could mark a possible return for Wilkerson. On Thursday, Ryan said there was a 50/50 chance Wilkerson played in Nashville.

He was limited at Friday's practice, but only got a couple reps in team periods -- the same amount he received Thursday, when he practiced for the first time since he got hurt Nov. 24 against the Bills. Wilkerson has worn a specialized cleat this week.

"Dang, I was hoping he'd be better than that (doubtful for this game)," Ryan said. "I know he's uncomfortable trying to get used to the shoe. There's some pain there. He's working at it."

Ryan said Wilkerson might not even make it to Nashville, to test his injury during pregame warm-ups and see how he feels.

"If he's definitely not playing, then we might not travel him," Ryan said, adding that the decision would be made Saturday after he consults with the Jets' medical staff.

Safety Antonio Allen broke his hand last week in Minnesota and is listed as questionable for the Titans game. He was limited in Friday's practice, after not practicing at all Wednesday or Thursday. But like Wilkerson's situation, Ryan didn't sound optimistic about Allen's chances of suiting up against the Titans.

"I'm not so sure here," Ryan said. "You could tell that he's really favoring that hand. He's not really running right."

BALTIMORE — Marcus Mariota has never been to New York City and doesn’t know much about the Jets other than the fact Rex Ryan — at least for now — is their head coach.

But if the likely winner of the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night declares for the NFL Draft and ends up getting picked by the Jets, Mariota told The Post he would consider that “awesome” and “a blessing.”

“If the Jets like me and it happens that they take me, I’ll be the best Jet I can be and play my heart out for them,” the star Oregon quarterback said Friday night. “I’ll do whatever it takes to win games. I would love to play for them.”

Mariota, who stopped over in Baltimore to pick up the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award on his way for the Heisman announcement in Manhattan, figures to have no shortage NFL suitors if the junior decides to turn pro next month.

Mariota told The Post he plans to decide “a couple of days” after the Ducks’ final game, which could be as soon as Jan. 1 with Oregon having to play defending national champion Florida State and Jameis Winston in the Rose Bowl in a College Football Playoff semifinal.

Mariota insisted his decision won’t depend on his opinion of the Jets or any other of the bottom five teams or so that would be in position to take him. In other words, no Eli Manning-like power plays from him.

“It won’t matter who the teams are at all or if it’s a big market or a small-market [team],” Mariota told The Post. “It’ll be based on what the family needs and what best fits us. My decision is based on my parents and my brother. I don’t listen to anyone else.”

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Mariota surprised and disappointed some scouts last year by deciding to stay in school. Mariota said Friday it isn’t out of the question he could stay for another year, even if he ends up winning the Heisman and a national championship.

“You can always get better,” Mariota said. “If I were to go back to school, it would just be another opportunity to get better.”

More likely is Mariota picking the NFL, where he could very well end up with the quarterback-needy Jets if they continue to lose. They are 2-11 heading into a visit to the 2-11 Titans on Sunday in a game some have dubbed the Mariota Bowl.

As excited as Mariota claims to be about the possibility of playing for the Jets, don’t expect him to bowl you over with encyclopedic knowledge of Gang Green.

“I know Rex Ryan’s the head coach, and I grew up a huge Michael Vick fan,” Mariota said. “Other than that, though, I don’t really watch NFL games, so I don’t know a whole lot. We’ll see how it pans out.”

Mariota admitted the only NFL team he follows is the Cowboys, who have owned his heart since they rallied furiously to beat the Redskins in the 1999 season opener in the very first football game he remembers watching as a 6-year-old in Hawaii.

“I grew up a Cowboys fan,” Mariota said. “My entire room is full of Cowboys stuff, because the first game I ever watched with my dad was a Cowboys game against the Redskins and the Cowboys came back to win. I was a Cowboys fan from then on.”

At least Friday night, Mariota appeared to be more excited about making his first visit to the Big Apple than contemplating his football future.

“I’m definitely pumped about it,” Mariota said of New York City. “Hopefully, I can take in some of the scene and the things I’ve always seen on TV. I really want to check out Times Square, and I’m told our hotel is right next to it. So that should be a fun time.”

And if he ended up playing there full-time next season?

“That would be wild,” Mariota said. “A dream come true.”

Wide receiver Percy Harvin said he “absolutely” wants to return next season and continue his career with the Jets despite their current 2-11 record and uncertain leadership.

“I feel at home here. I’m comfortable with all the players,” Harvin said Friday. “I like the vibe around here.”

The Jets acquired Harvin in October from the Seahawks for a conditional draft pick. With all of his guaranteed money expiring this season, the Jets could cut Harvin without hurting their cap. But he has proven a productive player, catching 25 passes for 306 yards and one touchdown. He also has returned 18 kickoffs for 443 yards.

Harvin suffered an ankle sprain in the overtime loss at Minnesota on Sunday and wasn’t expected to be back for Sunday’s game against the Titans in Nashville, Tenn. But Harvin participated in portions of team practice Friday and said he’s ready to play.

“I should ready to go,” he said. “I practiced. I felt fine. I expect to be on the field.”

Coach Rex Ryan was among those impressed by Harvin’s recuperative powers.

“It’s unbelievable how fast he is healing from it,” Ryan said.

Linebacker David Harris, the unassuming eighth-year veteran from Michigan, needs 13 tackles to total 1,000 for his career.

“That is like ridiculous,” Ryan said. “When they said that number, it’s almost staggering.”

Muhammad Wilkerson (toe) saw limited work at practice and is doubtful for Sunday’s game. Antonio Allen (hand) remains questionable. Jace Amaro (concussion); Willie Colon (knee); Nick Folk (hip); Trevor Reilly (concussion) are all probable.

Linebacker Calvin Pace doesn’t care for those rooting for the Jets to lose and achieve a high draft pick.

“One draft pick ain’t going to change things,” Pace said. “If you end up with a high draft pick, that guy still has to get seasoned and become a pro. Very few times does a franchise change with one guy. If that’s your thinking, that’s your thinking. But there’s a little more to it than that.”

It was easy to tell Mo Wilkerson was not in a good mood. Never the most cheerful of fellows, he wore the bah humbug look when reporters approached him Friday about the state of his turf toe and whether he’ll be able to play Sunday in Nashville against the Titans.

“I don’t know,” was about all Wilkerson offered. He is listed as doubtful and may not even travel with the team. It would be his third straight game missed after suffering his toe injury against the Bills.

“If he’s definitely not playing then we might not travel with him,” head coach Rex Ryan said of Wilkerson. “We’ll see. But he’s listed as doubtful. [Saturday] we’ll see what the trainers think.”

It seems a bit odd that a toe injury can cripple one of the top defensive linemen in the NFL. But we’ve seen before where the sprain of the ligaments around the big toe joint has turned into a lingering injury that players such as Ray Lewis and Deion Sanders had to suffer through.

That’s why Wilkerson should make sure he’s 100 percent healthy when he returns to the Jets. And he shouldn’t be blamed if he considers shutting it down for the rest of the season. At the very least, he should be in no rush to get back to a Jets team that appears in no rush to re-sign him to a contract extension.

Certainly, Wilkerson wants to get back on the field and battle alongside his brothers. That’s the kind of player he is. But he’s only human if he thinks about his future as well.

Ryan seemed disappointed in Wilkerson’s progress this week. After missing the first games of his career, against the Dolphins and the Vikings, Wilkerson has practiced in a limited capacity this week.

“Dang, I was hoping he would be better than that,” Ryan said. “But we will see how it goes. I know he is uncomfortable trying to get used to the shoe and all of that. There is some pain there. But he is working at it.”

Wilkerson’s duty is to get healthy enough to get back on the field as soon as he can, and he’s trying with a special shoe that lessens impact on his toe. But the reality is the Jets are 2-11 with Wilkerson’s performance and future serving as one of the few bright spots. He has 4.5 sacks in a year in which the Jets’ numbers defensively are down across the board. But he remains one of the league’s best every-down linemen.

The Linden, N.J., native by way of Temple is finishing the fourth year of his rookie contract, making $1.2 million this season. The Jets already have exercised a team option for 2015 scheduled to pay him $6.7 million.

It sounds like a big raise, but Wilkerson will want to avoid that for two reasons: First it would be the final year of a deal with no further guaranteed money. Secondly, it will be about $16 million less than J.J. Watt will make next year.

Both entered the league as first-round draft picks in 2011, when the new collective bargaining agreement mandated drafted players receive four-year deals with the team getting a fifth-year option on first-rounders. The Texans redid Watt’s contract in September, reportedly worth $100 million with $21 million guaranteed.

Wilkerson may not be as dominant as Watt. But the Jets need a face on their franchise, and without an established quarterback, he is the next best thing. Jets fans watched Darrelle Revis walk out the door because he and the team could not do business. Wilkerson saw it, too. You would think the Jets want to avoid a similar scenario with Wilkerson.

Some of that $20 million in cap money general manager John Idzik didn’t spend this season was supposed to be earmarked for Wilkerson. He shouldn’t limp back on the field with some specially designed shoe until he gets it.

Regardless of how this eyesore of a season ends, one of the first priorities of the new GM will be to do the right thing by re-signing Wilkerson to an extension. He’s the closest thing to a star the Jets have in this season of darkness.

Percy Harvin was unable to walk away without crutches from a matchup against his old mates in Minneapolis last Sunday, but he expects to take the field against the Titans this Sunday.

The receiver returned to the practice field Friday morning, something Rex Ryan seemed to think was a minor miracle.

The wide receiver injured his ankle late in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s overtime loss to the Vikings and hadn’t practiced all week, but he was a limited participant in Friday’s practice and officially is listed as questionable.

Ryan dubbed Harvin a game-time decision, but not only does the veteran believe he’ll play, he thinks he can take on a full complement of snaps.

“I did today pretty much all my cuts I think I’d have to do in a game, as far as coming out of my breaks and things like that,” Harvin said after practice. “It felt pretty good. I told all the coaches it felt good, and they said I looked good.

“I expect to play without any limitations.”

It came as a shock to Ryan that Harvin was able to run and cut so closely removed from what appeared to be a serious low ankle injury.

“The fact he’s out there is pretty amazing,” Ryan said.

Still, Ryan wouldn’t commit to Harvin playing in Nashville against the Titans, who own the same, horrid 2-11 record as the Jets. Ryan says he’ll lean on the doctors and training staff for their diagnosis of the progress of Harvin’s ankle. “Obviously you’re not gonna put a player out there that can harm himself, that can’t defend himself,” Ryan said.

The dynamic playmaker had his second standout performance as a Jet against the Vikings, the team he played with for four seasons after they took him in the first round of the 2009 draft. He scored his first touchdown since being acquired in a trade with Seattle in mid-October, a 35-yard reception in the first quarter.

He finished with six catches for 124 yards and racked up 109 yards on four kick returns. That came after three lackluster games, which followed a breakout 11-catch, 129-yard game against the Chiefs on Nov. 2.

Harvin didn’t appear to be running at full speed during the portion of practice open to media, but he claimed he was.

“Yes sir,” he said. “Went through all the walkthroughs. Had a little bit of team plays each period. . . . I practiced, I felt fine. I expect to be on the field.”

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jace Amaro could only sit back and watch, as a New York Jets season that was already bad got even worse.

Amaro, the rookie tight end who missed the last two Jets gameswith a concussion, could only wonder if he could have helped.

He and the Jets will find out Sunday, when Amaro is expected back in the lineup for the Jets' game against the Tennessee Titans. Amaro practiced fully this week, and the Jets list him as probable for Sunday.

"When you miss some games, especially some close ones where you feel you could have made a difference, it definitely puts a point of emphasis on getting back and playing well," Amaro said Sunday.

Amaro seemed to be progressing before the injury, with a 10-catch game against the Denver Broncos and a touchdown catch in the Jets' upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Jets have struggled at tight end with him out; Jeff Cumberland dropped a pass in the end zone last Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

It wouldn't be a surprise if the Jets cut back on Cumberland's playing time, possibly even with Zach Sudfeld seeing some time. But Amaro's return could be key.

"He has done some very good things," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. "We all have to get better at some other things, but he has done well."

Amaro, a second-round pick out of Texas Tech, feels good about his rookie season.

"I know Marty's got a good plan for me," Amaro said. "He's always had a plan to emphasize me, every week. I feel like I had a good first half of a season. I just want to finish these games strong, and make a point out of what I want to bring into next year.

Though Ryan wouldn't fully commit to having his wide receiver available, he now isn't ruling it out.

"The fact that he's out there [on the practice field] is amazing," Ryan said. "This was a significant [ankle] injury. It's unbelievable. I'm still not sure, but I've been impressed."

The news wasn't nearly as good on defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who practiced Friday but was once again severely limited by turf toe. The Jets listed Wilkerson as doubtful for Sunday's game, and Ryan said there's a chance Wilkerson won't even travel to Tennessee.

Harvin seems to have passed that hurdle. He practiced Friday, for the first time this week, and continued his campaign to play in the game.

"I should be ready to roll," Harvin said. "I practiced, I felt fine, and I expect to be on the field. I did all my cuts that I have to do in a game. I told all the coaches I felt good, and they said I looked good. I fully expect to play, without any limitations."

Harvin, who came to the Jets from Seattle with plenty of baggage and no guarantee for next season, has every reason to want to play, and every reason to be on his best behavior.

So far, he's done both, with 25 catches in six games with the Jets, and with no complaints from his coaches and teammates. Ryan said Harvin even received votes from some Jets players for the Ed Block Courage Award.

"This is the guy that we see, since he's been here," Ryan said. "The respect he's built with his teammates is incredible."

Harvin hadn't been with the Jets long when he first began talking about how he felt at home. He hasn't stopped saying it, and he repeated Friday that he would like to stay here.

"I feel at home here," Harvin said. "I like the vibe around here. I just feel at home. Everyone's on the same page. I just overall love the whole organization."

The Jets say they love Harvin, too. By Sunday, they might even agree with him that he's ready to play.

Wilkerson's recovery has been slower than Harvin's. Ryan said that Wilkerson has struggled to get used to a new shoe that was designed to alleviate the pain from the turf toe, and Wilkerson would only answer "I don't know" when asked if he thought he could play.

The Jets might also be without cornerback Antonio Allen, who is trying to return from a broken hand. Allen returned to practice Friday, but Ryan said he was very limited in what he could do.

Two of the NFL's five worst team's square off Sunday at LP Field.

Big changes are coming for the Tennessee Titans and the New York Jets, two teams that are a mess and carry 2-11 records into the game.

Young players will gain experience, and coaches will see how willing their players remain to give them their all.

But a win in this game could be unhealthy for the long-term forecast, because the high draft pick to come should have a big bearing on the potential for a turnaround in 2015 and beyond.

ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini and Titans reporter Paul Kuharsky got together to chat about the New York-Tennessee game.

Paul Kuharsky: Chris Johnson spoke before the season as if his new offensive coordinator was going to have all the answers and he was going to prove the Titans wrong for moving on. I saw some good runs when they were on national TV, but how’s the body of work been?

Rich Cimini: Suffice it to say that offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg hasn't had all the answers. This has been a frustrating year for Johnson, who has expressed his feelings on a few occasions. This will be the first time he doesn't reach 1,000 yards. He got off to a slow start, probably because of the surgically

repaired knee. He has been more elusive in recent weeks, looking more like the Johnson of old. Your Titans' followers might find this hard to believe, but he's third in the league in yards-after-contact per rush with 2.29. I thought he'd be a bigger factor in the passing game -- so did the coaches -- but he had a couple of early drops and they forgot about him. Johnson will be highly motivated for this game. He's been talking about it since he signed nine months ago.

What happened to Shonn Greene? He was a tough, workmanlike back with the Jets, but he seems to be off the radar now.

Paul Kuharsky: He is. Last week he was a healthy scratch as the Titans tried to get a look at rookie Antonio Andrews, who’s a similar back. But Andrews, like Greene so many times before him, didn’t get much action as the game steered the Titans in a different direction. Greene hurt a knee in the 2013 opener, missed five games and was never the same. He still got 19 carries in a game with Mike Munchak as the coach. This year he’s maxed out at 15 in the opener and hasn’t had more than 11 since. Since Week 5, he has 16 carries total. He’s not a bad situational back, but the worst third-down offense in the NFL isn’t in third-and-short a lot. They gave him a three-year, $10 million deal. I don’t think he’s going to see Year 3.

The Titans are beat up on the offensive line and got torched for eight sacks by the Giants. The Jets look to have a more formidable front than the team they share their stadium with. How’s the pass rush?

Rich Cimini: The pass rush looked good early in the season, but like most everything else on the Jets, it faded -- only nine sacks in the past five games. That said, the defensive line is the strongest unit on the Jets. The Titans should pay attention to Sheldon Richardson, who is coming off the Jets' first three-sack game since 2009. The 2013 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year is making a Pro Bowl push. There's a chance that Muhammad Wilkerson, sidelined the past two games with turf toe, could return this week. He has a specially designed shoe and is planning to test it in practice. Their pass-rushers are hungry, and there could be plenty of eats against the Titans' woeful line.

Some in New York are calling this the Mariota Bowl. Clearly, the Jets will be in the quarterback market. What about the Titans? Would Marcus Mariota, or even Jameis Winston, be a no-brainer pick?

Paul Kuharsky: I don’t think so. Mariota is a good player, but running around is a big part of what he does, and Ken Whisenhunt is big on pocket passers. Winston would bring some potential to have Vince Young-style issues, and the Titans are not that far removed from that headache and the setbacks it caused the franchise. Anything is possible. But I think they’ll probably go forward with Zach Mettenberger as the starter. He’s shown some promise and is just the style Whisenhunt likes -- a tall guy who can stand in against the rush and has a big arm to deliver the ball. If they stick with him, perhaps they can trade back a bit and land more picks to address their giant list of needs. A pass-rushing threat at outside linebacker in the 3-4 is a must.

Is Rex Ryan down to his final three games in New York? How about general manager John Idzik? Who deserves the most blame for the state of the team?

Rich Cimini: Yes, Ryan's days are numbered. He knows it and everybody in the organization knows it. When you miss the playoffs four straight years, especially in a market like New York, it's tough to make a strong case for him to stay. Idzik's future is less certain. My sense is there's a chance that he, too, will be fired. This is only his second year, but nothing has gone right. He inherited a 6-10 team and turned it into a 2-11 team. I'd say he's probably more at fault than Ryan. Idzik did a poor job of drafting and attacking needs in free agency. He also has turned off people in the organization with his stubborn, closed-door style of management. They could use a good house cleaning.

Obviously, this isn't a stellar matchup, but I think the Jets are still playing hard for Rex Ryan. Can the same be said for the Titans and Ken Whisenhunt?

Paul Kuharsky: I’m not so sure. They are so overwhelmed so quickly these days, there is a resignation that runs through the team as the familiar pattern unfolds. Neil O’Donnell, who quarterbacked the Jets and the Titans, still lives in Nashville and said on the radio this week that he doesn’t believe guys want to play for Whisenhunt. It’s a complete mess, and while no current players are critiquing the coach and his staff, there have been some hints they have questions. And they should. The Titans don’t have much talent, but Whisenhunt has done a poor job of making the most of what he has. There will be big roster turnover in the offseason, but if a roster filled more with Whisenhunt guys doesn’t show significant improvement, his job could have just a two-year tenure.
