Advanced Occupational Safetyand Health Certification (AOSHC)

This program is designed for the development of professionals in both theconstruction industry and general industry. The AOSHC targets skills thatincrease compliance with regulatorystandards, improve productivity andenhance employee participation in thesafety and health process.

Each AOSHC graduate will receiveCUNY certification of course completionand certification from OSHA for two 30hour Outreach programs, OSHA 40 hourHazwoper program and the OSHA 7600elective course. They will also receivethe nationally recognized certification ofConstruction Health and Safety Technician(CHST) or Occupational Health and SafetyTechnologist (OHST) if they successfullypass the certification exam.

Course Descriptions

(CHST) Construction Health &Safety Technician ExaminationPreparation WorkshopThis is a review and preparation course forpersonnel preparing to take the Board ofCertified Safety Professionals ConstructionHealth and Safety Technician examination.Within the 30 hour program participants willreceive CHST education, review requirementsand discuss over two hundred questionsaddressing the nine areas to be covered bythe exam. They will also learn how to useOSHA General Industry and ConstructionStandards and become familiar withresources available to prepare for theexam. Upon completion of the workshop,participants should be able to identify theirstrengths as well as areas where furtherstudy may be required.

(OHST) Occupational Health &Safety Technologist ExaminationPreparation Workshop This is a review course for those preparingfor the Occupational Health and SafetyTechnologist Examination leading to thedesignation of Occupational Health andSafety Technologist (OHST). This is a jointcertification of the American Board ofIndustrial Hygiene (ABIH) and the Board ofCertified Safety Professionals (BCSP).The exam is designed to recognize theexpanding role of technologists in supportof occupational health and safety.

Fundamentals of Industrial HygieneThis 30 hour course is designed as an introduction to basic concepts of industrialhygiene. It is aimed at the individual whohas just begun to assume responsibility inthe area of industrial hygiene, whetherdirect working responsibility or managingresponsibility. Participants will gainfamiliarity with the basic terms and essentialconcepts of the field and an understandingof the key principles of the professionalpractice of industrial hygiene: recognition,evaluation and control of occupationalhealth hazards.

OSHA - 40 HR - HazwoperThis course satisfies the requirements ofOSHA Standard 1910.120. It is a healthand safety training course required for allpersonnel who may work at a hazardouswaste site. Topics to be covered include:hazardous materials chemistry, toxicology,air purifying respirators, self-containedbreathing apparatus, protective clothing,site decontamination and responseincidents. A safety certificate is awardedupon completion of this course.

OSHA 30 Hour Outreach for GeneralIndustryThe OSHA 30-Hour General Industry courseprovides compliance safety training toprepare all employees for the hazards foundin manufacturing, service and distributioncompanies. This course is the primarytraining program of the OSHA OutreachTraining Program. Attendees will gain anunderstanding of OSHA regulations as theyapply to manufacturing and service facilities.Learn your rights and responsibilities froman OSHA Authorized Instructor. Uponsuccessful completion the student willreceive certification from OSHA for the 30Hour General Industry

OSHA 30 Hour Outreach for theConstruction IndustryThe OSHA 30-Hour Construction courseprovides compliance safety training toprepare all employees for the hazards foundon job sites. responsibilities from an OSHA AuthorizedInstructor. Upon successful completion thestudent will receive certification from OSHAfor the 30 Hour Construction Industry

Automotive and Fleet SafetyManagementEmployees in auto body, auto serviceshops, and fleet managers are potentiallyexposed to a variety of chemical andphysical hazards. Chemical hazards mayinclude volatile organics from paints, fillersand solvents, dusts from sanding, and fumesfrom welding/cutting and vehicle exhaust.Physical hazards include: repetitive stressand other ergonomic injuries, noise, lifts,hand and power tools, and oil and greaseon walking surfaces. This course is designedto assist the individuals and managers in thedevelopment of safety and health protocolsfor personal protection as well as employer /employee protection.

Fire Safety and Fire SystemsOSHA and virtually every municipality andfire district require a comprehensive fireprevention/ protection effort in the workplace.This course will cover the common causesof fires/fire hazards, regulator and legalaspects of fire safety, periodic fire hazardsurveys, as well as the principles, use andinspection of portable fire extinguishers andfixed fire systems.

DOT and Highway SafetyAttendees will obtain basic knowledge inhow to set up traffic patterns and detours onroadways. Protection of the public andproper personal protective equipment whileperforming maintenance on public trans-portation ways will also be addressed. This

course in designed to assist the individualsand managers in the road, highway andpublic transportation construction industry inthe development of effective safe work plansthat will meet all regulatory requirements.

OSHA 8-hr Hour HazwoperRefresherEveryone who has taken the 24- or 40- hourOSHA Hazwoper course is required tomaintain certification by taking an eight-hourannual refresher course. This course is fullof interactive exercises and activities tohelp meet OSHA requirements. The information is delivered in a straightforwardmanner as it applies to the currentOSHA regulations.

OSHA 7600 Disaster Site WorkerThe goal of this course is to increase theparticipant’s awareness of the safety andhealth hazards, including CBRNE agentsthat may be encountered at a natural orhuman-made disaster site. The importanceof respiratory and other personal protectiveequipment and proper decontaminationprocedures that may be used to mitigate thehazards will be emphasized. Participantswill support the use of an Incident CommandSystem through the safe performance oftheir job responsibilities. They will be able toshow awareness of effects of traumaticincident stress that can result from workingconditions and measures to reduce thisstress. In addition, participants will be ableto perform the following specific taskscorrectly: 1) inspection of an air-purifyingrespirator; 2) donning and doffing an air-purifying respirator; and 3) respirator userseal check. The audience for this course isDisaster Site Workers who provide skilledsupport services e.g., utility, demolition,debris removal, or heavy equipmentoperation or site clean-up services inresponse to a disaster.

Trainer Course in OSHA Standardsfor the Construction Industry(OSHA 500)

This course is designed for personnel in theprivate sector interested in teaching the10- and 30-hour construction safety andhealth outreach program to their employeesand other interested groups. Special emphasisis placed on those topics that are requiredin the 10- and 30-hour programs as well ason those that are the most hazardous, usingOSHA standards as a guide. Course partici-pants are briefed on effective instructionalapproaches and the effective use of visualaids and handouts. This course allows thestudent to become a trainer in the OutreachProgram and to conduct both a 10- and30-hour construction safety and healthcourse and to issue cards to participantsverifying course completion.NOTE: Students in Course 500 who wish toparticipate as authorized trainers in theOutreach Program must successfully pass awritten exam at the end of the course.Outreach trainers are required to attendCourse 502 at least once every four yearsto maintain their trainer status.

Trainer Course in OSHA Standardsfor General Industry (OSHA 501)This course is designed for personnel inthe private sector interested in teaching the10- and 30-hour general industry safety andhealth outreach program to their employeesand other interested groups. Specialemphasis is placed on those topics that arerequired in the 10- and 30-hour programsas well as on those that are the mosthazardous, using OSHA standards as aguide. Course participants are briefed oneffective instructional approaches and theeffective use of visual aids and handouts.This course allows the student to becomea trainer in the Outreach Program and to

conduct both a 10- and 30-hour generalindustry safety and health course and toissue cards to participants verifying coursecompletion.NOTE: Students in Course 501 who wish toparticipate as authorized trainers in theOutreach Program must successfully passa written exam at the end of the course.Outreach trainers are required to attendCourse 503 at least once every four yearsto maintain their trainer status.

OSHA 10 Hour – ConstructionThe 10 Hour construction safety course wasdeveloped by the US Department of Laborto provide construction workers, supervisors,and other personnel responsible forconstruction activities with an awareness ofconstruction safety and health concerns inthe construction industry. All attendees willbecome familiar with reading and using theOSHA Standards for Construction 29 CFR1926. Other construction safety and healthstandards are also discussed. Attendeesreceive an update and review of standardconstruction safety and health principles, andinformation that prepares them to recognizeand control a variety of hazardous conditions.An OSHA card, certificate of completion willbe issued.

OSHA 10-Hour General IndustryThis course provides instruction on avariety of general industry safety and healthstandards. It's particularly useful for thosewho are just entering the safety field andwould like a better understanding of what isrequired and where to start. Course subjectmatter includes an introduction OSHA;OSHAct / General Duty Clause; inspections,citations and penalties; walking and workingsurfaces; means of egress and fire protec-tion; and electrical. Students who completethe course will receive course completioncards from the OSHA.

Health and Safety Plan (HASP)Development CourseHealth and Safety Plans are established bythe employer or a designated health andsafety officer to ensure employee protectionagainst hazards. All programs shouldinclude: (i) an organizational structure, (ii)development of site specific health andsafety plans, (iii) training for all workers (iv)periodic employee medical examinationsto test for exposure. Development of acomprehensive health and safety programis of utmost importance to worker safety.Often these programs are scrutinized veryclosely by government agencies, ownersand contractors involved in projects andwith general industry plant conditions toassure effectiveness and completeness.This course will assist individuals andcompanies in the design, development andimplementation of a successful writtenhealth and safety plan for both generalindustry and construction.

SUPPORTED SCAFFOLD TRAININGCity Tech has been approved by the NYCDepartment of Buildings to offer the 32-hourSupported Scaffold Certificate of Completiontraining course, the eight (8) hour refreshercourse and the four (4) hour training coursefor scaffold users. These courses meet theintent of compliance with Local Law No. 52and Article 10 of Subchapter 2 of Chapter 1of Title 26 of the Administrative Code of theCity of New York. Participants will receive acertificate upon course completion.

4-Hour Supported Scaffold User CertificateProgram

The 4-hour course is designed for individualsusing supported scaffolds, with elevationsgreater than 40 feet, on sites where a permithas been issued for the erection, dismantling,repair, maintenance or modification of a build-ing or structure. Completers will be issued aSupported Scaffold User Certificate.

32 Hour Supported Scaffold Certificateof Completion

The 32-hour course is for individuals who areinvolved in the erection, dismantling, repairing,maintaining, or modifying any supportedscaffold, with elevations greater than 40 feet,on sites where a permit has been issued. Thisregulation also applies to those individualswho provide assistance in the above tasks.Completers will be issued a Supported ScaffoldCertificate of Completion.
