Zoo med terrariums are ideal for bio-active set ups. Their single door provides unobstructed viewing, while the mesh panel top without intrusive plastic cross members allows excellent ventilation and easy positioning of lamps. There are many dedicated products for bio-active set ups which are ideal for selling along side the terrariums.

Create the bio-active setup shown here by following this simple step by step guide.

Add drainage medium (5-10cm in depth), to create the water reservoir.

Add a separation mesh over the top of the drainage medium. This prevents substrate migrating into the drainage layer.

Add bio-active substrate and add décor. You can create terraces and slopes to make an interesting landscape.

Place live plants directly into the substrate. Consider how large they will grow, placing large plants at the back.

Add lighting on top of the terrarium to give the plants sufficient light to grow correctly and meet the needs of the animals housed..

Add water by pouring it over the substrate and let it filter through to the drainage medium. Water every now and again too but do not over water the plants. Aim to keep the substrate slightly damp and keep about 1cm of water at the bottom of the drainage layer.

can bask to raise their body temperature, while being exposed to essential UVB. This mimics what would happen in the wild when an animal was basking in the sun.

One disadvantage of these bulbs is that they cannot be controlled via a thermostat. The wattage of the bulb needs to be chosen so that it creates the desired temperature at the basking site when mounted. A suitable on/off thermostat can be used as an emergency cut off to prevent overheating.

Where are they used?

These types of lamps are ideal for use in open top enclosures, such as tortoise tables, and mesh topped terrariums where they can be used successfully without the need for a thermostat.

What other equipment is needed?

Bright Suns need an external ballast unit in the same way as fluorescent tubes. They have a standard ES screw fitting but always use a high quality ceramic holder, such as the Lucky Reptile Thermosocket, as the bulbs will get hot.

How much do they cost?

These bulbs need a suitable holder and starter unit and together the cost would be broadly equivalent to purchasing a mercury vapour bulb and holder. The bulbs themselves are normally cheaper than mercury vapour bulbs.

Metal halide lamps like the Lucky Reptile Bright Suns are extremely popular in Europe but are used less commonly in the UK.

We love these lamps however and have used them extensively, particularly in enclosures containing live plants, and would like to see more people taking advantage of this great product. The key to this will be education of users to appreciate their advantages and our fact file below should help you educate your customers.

What are Bright Sun lamps?

Bright suns are Metal Halide lamps which produce visible light, heat and UV. Each halide produces a specific wavelength and it is possible to “build” a spectrum by changing the mix of the gasses inside the bulb.

The visible light produced is very bright which is important to many reptiles, particularly day active basking species. The 2 versions (jungle and desert) have slightly different visible spectrums and produce very natural looking light which also contains UVA and UVB.

Apart from bright, full spectrum light and essential UVB what else do they provide?

Although these lamps convert most of their energy into light, they still produce some heat and can be used to create a suitable basking zone.

Heat mats are a common heat source used for many species of reptile, amphibian and invertebrate. These can be used on the base of a tank to provide warmth from below, or attached to the side or roof of an enclosure so that substrate and cage décor does not stop the heat reaching the animal. Mounting on the wall or roof is also recommended to reduce the risk of thermal blocking which can cause the mat to overheat.
