Year 9 Sports Science guidance: Work to be completed at home –
WEEK 8 (week beginning 01.06.2020)
There are several of you who have not yet sent your finished
assignments for RO42 LO1 to RSN, you should have completed this
in the first 7 weeks of work that was set. It is crucial if you have not
sent this work that you complete this as soon as possible, if you are
struggling with the work you can email me at
If you did/do not have a computer, you needed to hand write the
assignment. KEEP IT SAFE.
NEW WORK! RO42 LO2 KNOW HOW DIFFERENT TRAINING
METHODS TARGET DIFFERENT FITNESS COMPONENTS.
MAKE NOTES IN YOUR NEW SPORTS SCIENCE WORK BOOKLET THAT SHOULD
HAVE ARRIVED IN THE POST (IF IT HAS NOT, USE LINED PAPER) USE THE
PAGES BELOW TO HELP YOU MAKE NOTES (You will need to scroll down) ON:
TRAINING METHODS
1) Describe, compare and contrast the differences between
aerobic and anaerobic training (Read page 42 & 43 for
understanding- the document is below) and give examples of
types of aerobic training methods and examples of types of
anaerobic training methods.
HELP! Things to describe and compare:
• What does each method involve?
• How does the body operate/work during aerobic and
anaerobic exercise? (explain how the body, heart, lungs get
energy during each type of exercise, it is slightly different!)
• Think about glucose use, how is glucose, how is energy
produced during aerobic and anaerobic exercise? Which type
of exercise relies on using oxygen to create energy and which
type does not?
• Which type of exercise is done at a short and high intensity,
which is type is done over a longer lower intensity?
• What might we do in training as a form of aerobic exercise?
Give 4 examples
• What might we do in training as a form of anaerobic exercise?
Give 4 examples
• When might we use each type of exercise in different sports?
(really think about a sport you know well, when in a game
would a footballer or rugby player work aerobically and
anaerobically?)
2) Again in your work booklets/on lined paper define/describe
each of the components of fitness and give TWO sporting
examples for each component to demonstrate how that
component would benefit an athlete in their sport.
Help!
• Make sure you have described strength, power, agility,
balance, flexibility, muscular endurance, cardiovascular
endurance.
• Underneath the description of each component, say how it
would benefit 2 different athletes. Be specific with your
examples. For instance, “strength would allow a rower to pull
an oar through the water with greater force. This would mean
the boat moves quicker through the water and they will
increase their speed, time and chances of winning.”
