Somos muy conscientes de la existencia de la cizaña en nuestro mundo. Continuamente los medios de comunicación nos ofrecen información de violencia, muertes, odios y tantos otros signos de la cizaña que crece en nuestra sociedad; por eso, cuando leemos el evangelio de hoy, enseguida podemos aplicarlo e identificar la cizaña, incluso con nombres y apellidos. Hasta en nuestra misma familia nos resulta fácil encontrar la cizaña; pero se nos olvida el lado positivo. En contra de la negatividad que nos invaden tantas veces, lo primero que la parábola, afirma es que hay mucho trigo sembrado; hay tanto, que vale la pena aguardar al momento de la cosecha para quitar la cizaña. Hay mucha buena semilla sembrada por el Hijo del Hombre, como se dice en la explicación que Jesús hace de la parábola. Esa buena semilla está creciendo en nuestro mundo. Están los que solo quieren ver la cizaña presente en el campo, pero la realidad es que predomina la buena semilla, el trigo. Si solo hubiera cizaña, el dueño del campo habría dicho que lo arrancasen todo. No habría ninguna razón para esperar a la cosecha. Algo parecido nos dice Jesús en la parábola de la levadura. Apenas un poco de levadura es capaz de hacer que fermente toda la masa, por mucho que algunos piensen que es imposible. Frente a quienes piensan que la manzana podrida estropeará a las demás, Jesús —siempre diferente— afirma que la manzana buena será capaz de transformar al resto. La primera lectura confirma lo dicho. Dios es todopoderoso y por eso gobierna con indulgencia. Su poder se manifiesta en su capacidad para perdonar y dar la vida. Como dice la segunda lectura, el Espíritu viene en ayuda de nuestra debilidad e intercede por nosotros con gemidos inefables. El poder de Dios está de nuestro lado; está del lado de la vida y del bien, y no dejará que la cizaña se salga con la suya.

Las lecturas de este domingo nos traen un mensaje lleno de vida y esperanza. En nuestra sociedad, en nuestra familia, en cada uno de nosotros, hay mucho más trigo que cizaña. Hay mucho más salvable que condenable. Es más, ninguna persona está definitivamente condenada. Nuestro Dios espera por todos hasta el momento de la cosecha. Entonces será el momento de la purificación final, que salvará todo lo que sea trigo en nosotros y nos liberará definitivamente del peso de la cizaña. El Espíritu Santo nos ayuda en ese camino.

¿Te dejas llevar por el pesimismo al mirar la realidad de nuestro mundo, de nuestra sociedad, de tu familia o de ti mismo? Sigue los consejos de Jesús. ¿Qué signos de bien y de esperanza ves en ti mismo y en todo lo que te rodea? ¿Qué podrías hacer para que se vea más el trigo —que es más abundante— y menos la de la cizaña?

Reflexión

“Los que son justos deben ser generosos,” dice la primera lectura de hoy. Si nuestras palabras y actos son generosos y desinteresados, nosotros seremos como la Buena semilla en la parábola del Evangelio y seremos recogidos como

el trigo en la cosecha del Señor.

July 19, 2020 A Time To Harvest

We are well aware of the existence of weeds in our world. The media continual-ly provide us with information about violence, death, hatred, and so many other signs of weeds that grow in our society; that’s why, when we read today’s gospel we can apply it right away, we immediately identify the weeds and give them first and last names. We can easily find the weeds even in our own family; but we for-get the positive side of this. Against the negativity that so often invades us, the first thing the parable affirms is that there is also a lot of wheat planted; there is so much that it is worth waiting for the harvest time to remove the weeds. Lots of good seed are sown by the Son of man, as stated in the explanation that Jesus gives to the parable. That good seed is growing in our world. There are those who just want to see the weeds present in the field, but the truth is that the good seed is more prevalent than the weeds. If there were only weeds, the owner of the field would have told them to pull them all up. There would be no reason to wait for the harvest. Something like that is what Jesus tells us in the parable of the yeast. Just a little yeast can make all the dough ferment, even though a few would think that is impossible. Compared with those who think that the bad apple will spoil the others, Jesus—always different—says that it is the good apple that will indeed be able to transform the rest. The first reading today confirms what was said. God is almighty and that is why he rules with indulgence. His power is manifested in his ability to forgive and to give life. As the second reading says, the Spirit comes to help us in our weakness and intercedes for us with indescribable groans. The power of God is on our side; it is on the side of life and goodness, and will not let the weeds get away with it.

The readings for this Sunday bring us a message full of hope and life. In our soci-ety, in our family, in every one of us, there is much more wheat than weeds. There are many more things to save than to condemn. Moreover, no one is definitively condemned. Our God is waiting for all of us until the time of harvest. This would be the time for final purification, which will save all that is wheat in us and we will finally be released from the weight of the weeds. The Holy Spirit helps us in this journey.

reality of our world, our society, your family or yourself? Follow the advice of Jesus. What signs of goodness and hope do you see in yourself and in everything around you? What could you do to make more visible the wheat, which is more abundant, and less that of the weed?
