NHPA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE By Wally Shipley

California State did a first this year no qualifying. We sent our percentages and were seeded. I thought it worked out pretty well for the first time. Job well done Northern California Charter. California has a new State Champion — Congratulations Ronnie Simmons!

After the Tournament we took a week vacation. Went to see my youngest daughter in Nevada City, Ca. While there I went across the street to the park and played in the Gold Coun-try Horseshoe Club "Pot Luck Tournament. As I told you in the November issue in 1979 a beautiful setting for a Horseshoe Court. Shaded by hugh trees and a trout creek running along one side. Complete picnic table and benches with gas stoves and electrical outlets. Keep up the outstanding work Ruben Lee and all your other officers and workers. Again, I shall accept your invite and return with pleasure.

Congratulations to Walter Ray Williams, Jr. for again winning the Los Angeles County Fair Invitational Tournament.

I have a correction to make concerning the 1981 convention minutes published in the September Digest on page 39.

The delegates DID NOT vote to allow all By-Law proposals to appear before the conven-tion. They said that is what they have a committee and executive council for to delete By-Laws if poorly written or not good for our sport and the NHPA. So the committee and council will continue as in the past to only submit changes the majority passes. Mr. Wally Shipley 500 S. LaVeta Park, Circle Apt. 42 Orange, CA 92668 Dear Mr. Shipley:

We live in Genola, Minnesota right across the river from Preimesberger Arena and the 1981 World Horseshoe Tournament. Our home is one of the two houses that sit right on the south edge of the area set up as a temporary camp site for about 200 families taking part in the 1982 World tournament. Before the tournament started we were concerned about so many people in a small area so close to our home. These concerns turned out to be completely unfounded. The entire group was very neat, orderly and well-manored.

We visited with people from Texas to Canada and New York to California. All were just ex-cellent guests. When the tournament was over and everyone left there was not a paper sack full of garbage left in the entire campsite. Considering the extra amount of rain we had and the long period of camping for those who stayed the entire 10 days this is truely a great group.

Best of luck at your next tournament and congratulations to everyone. Sincerely, LeRoy and Marilyn Miller R.R. #2 Pierz, MN 56364

4 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/November, 1981 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - (Continued)

Jack Springer Parks and Recreation Director 432 West Bell St. Statesville, NC 28677 Dear Jack:

Congratulations on Statesville successful bid for the 1983 World Horseshoe Tournament. We'll look forward to your city's hospitality and hopefully once again meeting Governor

Jim Hunt. Best wishes for a healthy and successful year to you, your wife, the entire membership and

all City Officials. Sincerely, Wally Shipley President, NHPA

The 1982 World Tournament dates are Wednesday, July 28, thru Saturday, August 7. Coun-cil approved the suggestion to have Tournament end on Saturday. Allowing many members to have Sunday to go home.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE AND YOUR FAMILY. NOVEMBER NHPA PUBLICITY

During the month of November all NHPA Publicity volunteer workers and other members interested in promoting publicity for our sport are requested to offer personality write-ups to their local papers. With the outdoor season over in the cold-belt parts of the country, it would be a good time to give local players a write-up to local newspapers summarizing their season's achievements regardless of what class a player has done well in. Give results of the player's tournaments or league play, include as many women and children as possible. Look for players who are winning classes, who have been playing a relative short period of time.

The following is a form letter that the NHPA Publicity will send to your sports editor, TV, or radio sports reporter. The letter will be sent upon your request. Write your request to NHPA Publicity Director, Bernard Herfurth, 17 Fort Street, Northampton, Massachusetts 01060.

Dear Sports Reporter: This is a letter of appreciation from the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA).

We have received information from our local members in your area that you have been most cooperative in giving our great sport publicity. Our national and state association, as well as local clubs, are most appreciative.

The NHPA is a federation of fifty-five (55) state associations in the United States and Canada. Each has numerous affiliated clubs and individual members.

The NHPA strives to promote and organize our sport and to standardize the rules, equip-ment and playing procedures.

If at any time you would like additional information concerning our sport, please write to any of the members whose signatures appear below.

Again, thanks. We hope that you will continue to favor our sport with future publicity. It boasts of a national champion for men, women, boys and girls and is enjoyed by millions as a health-giving, competitive form of recreation.

Sincerely, Wally Shipley, President Donnie Roberts, Secretary

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/November, 1981 1981 NHPA HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

A large audience witnessed the 1981 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony during the World Tournament. It was held at the St. Joseph gym after the excellent dinner at Genola.

The ceremony was conducted by President Wally Shipley and the Chairman Bernard Her-furth. It was most fortunate that the four inductees were present to accept their plaques.

The first inductee was Mr. Arthur E. Adams of Saskatoon, Canada, who was inducted in the over 70 category. Mr. Adams at age 86 traveled the long distance with a party of six immediate relatives. His son, Colonel Jack Adams (retired, and Regional Director in Canada, inducted his dad.) Both Mr. Adams and Jack were attired in their bright green Canadian sport jackets. Jack gave a fine account of his father's activities as a player and organizer in Canada for many years. His family was presented.

• Cletus Chapelle, of Portland, Oregon was the second inductee, as an organizer. He was also inducted by a member of his family. Barry Chapelle, his son, who is a Regional Director in the Northwest and a fine player, gave an account of his dad's longtime activities in our sport. Cletus is the father of the 1981 World's Lady Champion, Vickie Winston, who won it for an unprecedented tenth time. He is also the father-in-law of Earl Winston, 3rd Vice-President and a good pitcher. Last but not least was Mrs. Chapelle who has been the guiding light to one of our foremost horseshoe pitching families.

The third inductee was Floyd Toule of Arkansas, one of the sport's top-notch players for many years until illness slowed him down. He was inducted by his long-time friend and oppo-nent, Carl Steinfeldt. Carl could not have commended Floyd any higher than he did. Mrs. Toole was also presented.

The final inductee was A1 Zadroga of Pennsylvania. He also was inducted by his friend and opponent of several years, Clyde Martz, inventer of the Imperial Horseshoe. Along with high praise, Clyde gave an account of Al's long pitching career. Mrs. Zadroga was by Al's side.

The four inductees and the four members who inducted them were fine speakers which add-ed up to one of NHPA's best Hall of Fame ceremonies.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR EDITOR Perhaps a great many of the subscribers have been wondering why their News Digests have

been late. To begin with the material for the September World Tournament was somewhat com-

plicated in order to get it produced. Each day's events were sent into me in separate envelopes. There were about twelve in all.

It took me some time to straighten out each of the various classes. The time involved in get-ting it set and printed and mailed took time.

During all this I lost both of my brothers by death which added to it. Then on the 23rd of September I had to have eye surgery, which is doing nicely now.

I hope to get back on schedule soon, but in the meantime, the next two issues will be late. As of now the October issue was mailed on the 28th.

If each of you will just be a little patient, all will be well. JOHNSON TOPS IN 1981 ALABAMA STATE MEET

3lit jMentorbtm It is with great sadness, that the Northern California Association reports the passing of

Frank Cravalho, a long-time member of Golden Gate Club of San Francisco. This friendly, out-going gentleman will be sorely missed by his many friends in the Association.

Frank thoroughly enjoyed the sport and was always a keen, tough competitor. Above all, Frank was a true sportsman.

ED DOMEY, DEBBY MICHAUD, SHELDON STEEVES, BRENDA MCNEILL WIN MASS, STATE SINGLES TITLES.

JOHN BELSITO & ANNE DOMEY CAPTURE DOUBLES Twelve championship or class titles were up for grabs in the 1981 Massachusetts State Cham-

pionships held at Heritage Recreation Center in Sutton. Nine of the 12 were won without a loss, three with but one loss. One of the biggest surprises was the fact that not a single playoff game was needed.

Ed Domey took back the Mens' title from Bernard Herfurth in their final game by a 40-37 margin. Domey caught a lead early and held it, but not without a struggle. Ed would creep ahead by 6, Bernie would pull it back to 3, and eventually back to even at 37-all. With Ed

leading 37-34, Bernie hit a double, Ed missed his first shoe, and a second miss would have cost him the game. At 37-all Bernie hit one, oh-oh'd the second. Domey Cooly popped a double for the championship. What made this war of nerves even more interesting was a spectator. Jack Aley was covering the tournament for a feature horseshoe pitching article to appear in Yankee magazine, and this was his first exposure to big-time pitching. Domey and Herfurth demonstrated everything Jack had been told the previous six hours.

Debby Michaud coasted to victory in the Womens' Division. As something of a tuneup for the New Englands, Debby was pleased that she was not struggling with the mechanics on route to her 76.5% average.

Brenda McNeill doubled her nearest opponent's average and also swept to victory in the Girl's Division.

Sheldon Steeves was given a workout but managed to repeat as Boys' champion. John Belsito and Anne Domey spotted Gerald Labrie and Earl Nash an early 18-0 lead in

their final match for the doubles championship. Then lightning struck. Anne doubled for 6, John doubled for 6, Anne 4'd, and the score was 18-16. They went on to score a convincing 37-28 for a great come from behind victory. What a pair! Belsito has improved his ringer average almost 35 percent in less than a year's time, due mainly to Anne's coaching.

The next day Rick Howe put Belsito in his place with a 64.2% average and Class B title, to Belsito's 60.5% and second place. At the same time Gerald Labrie was making a remarkable comeback from yesterdays' disappointment and took Class D with a 50.9% average, his highest ever. In between, Fran Norman was sweeping to victory in Class C. Buddy Ploof teased his opponents a bit by losing a game, but stayed on top in Class E.

The following week saw fireworks in the other classes, notably by Jean Begin and Whitey Bates. Bates broke open Class F with a 42.5% average, his best ever by far. Much of his im-provement is attributed to a weight loss of over 139 pounds. 4'My left leg no longer kills me after three games." He looks great, too. Jarvis Davis returned to the Mass. state wars after a 3-year absence and topped Class G with a 32.5% average.

Jean Begin was solidly placed in Class H with a legitimate 21% average. Little did his op-ponents suspect that he had (1) devoted over 48 hours to practice during his vacation and (2) had been under the tutelege of another Domey, Bob. The result was an opening 54% game and a final average of 37.5%, some six percent higher than his previous high game! Jean's best rep-ly to the ubiquitous raised eyebrows was, "Well, you won't be playing me again."

DIMARTINO RETURNS, WINS 1981 NEW YORK STATE TITLE RUTH HANGEN IN CLEAN SWEEP FOR WOMEN'S TITLE-BOB

PIKE JR. BOYS CHAMP—TRACI WARTERS WINS JR. GIRLS By James Castor

Michael J. DiMartino of Churchville, New York, pitching in his first state tournament since being injured seriously in an automobile accident in 1978, won 10 of 11 games and captured the 51st annual New York State horseshoe tournament over Labor Day Weekend in Floyd, N.Y.

DiMartino, a 40-year-old development technician at Kodak, averaged 72.6 percent for the tournament, including victories over former state tournament champion Joe Schultz and defending champion Art Tyson. A righthander, DiMartino won the tournament pitching a 1 lA turn with 1974 Allen horseshoes.

Schultz finished second at 9-2, losing only to DiMartino and Tyson. Tyson's victory over Schultz in the last game clinched DiMartino's title, on the last shoes thrown. Schultz covered Tyson's double with two ringers of his own, but the second ringer bounced off the stake. Tyson lost three games the first day and finished the tournament in fifth at 6-5.

Steve Fenicchia of Rochester was third at 7-4 and John Bogardus of Fort Edward, com-peting for the first time in Class A, finished fourth.

DiMartino finished sixth in the 1978 state tournament at New Rochelle, but shortly thereafter was hospitalized with severe whiplash and lower back injuries as the result of a rear-end collision involving a car in which he was a passenger. He missed 13 months of work and had two operations to fuse vertebrae in his neck and lower back. He returned to horseshoe pit-ching in April, 1981, and won tournaments in Pulaski, Camden and Hornell while averaging 75 percent.

Bob Deuster, a 17-year-old graduate of the junior division, was the only one to defeat DiMartino in the state tournament. Deuster pitched 80 percent in winning, 35-20, in the first game Sunday. Deuster finished sixth for the tournament.

In the women's division Ruth Hangen of Getzville maintained her recent mastery over longtime foe Lorraine Thomas of Lockport to win the division for the ninth time. Hangen pit-ched 73.7 percent. Both women have won the division nine times since its inception in 1963, but Thomas has not won since 1975.

Twelve-year-old Robert Pike of Canton easily defeated six others to defend his title in the junior boys division, averaging 67.6 percent. Traci Warters of Camden captured the newly-formed junior girls division with a 46.8 percentage.

In lower classifications, Richard Mudgett of Cattaraugus won Class B with a 64.8 percentage while Tony Sauro of Syracuse won Class C.

Two longtime members of the state association were inducted into the state hall of fame — Edith Werth of Lockport and Walter Shackelton of Walton — prior to the annual meeting. During the meeting, officers re-elected to the association were Jack Townsend of Canton, president; Ernie Hilpertshauser of Fort Edward as vice president and Ernie Graham of Camden as secretary-treasurer. The Camden horseshoe club will be host to the 1982 state tour-nament and Jamestown-Falconer in 1983.
