I have been asked about the dates of the Annual Pioneer Tractor Fall Show held on St. Annes Road in Vernon. I understand the property has change
ownership and that there will not be any show this year. I do hope it is only a temporary thing and that it is not a past event like the fabulous steam show that Pringles held each year. To Mic or Not to Mic at Meetings: - Yes the speaker can hear themselves and does not require a PA system to assist them. However some members unfortunately are experiencing hearing loss and need all the help they can get. Yes they can move up to the front as it is not always crowded up there. It was mentioned that with a number of members talking to each other at the rear of the room during the meeting it is very distracting and also makes it tougher to hear what is going on. I understand that at times there is 3 & 4 individual conversations going on at the same time. It would be nice if the socializing with each other could be left to after the meeting while having coffee. This is one of the reasons that coffee and doughnuts were introduced to the meetings so socializing could take place whereas years ago when the meeting was over that was it. The night was over. The 50/50 draw was then established later to pay for the evening refreshments. The “Name tag wine bottle draw” was started to encourage members to wear their name tags. This helps both the old [who forget who you are] and new members [who don’t know who you are]
The October Group Breakfast was once again popular as we had 26 members attend including some first timers. Please remember to let Dave know if you plan on attending one of the breakfast as Denny’s likes to know how many to expect. As the November Calendar will be late arriving at your computer please be patience with your Editor
CANADA 150 MAY TOUR Marlene Beddie
Hi Dave [Kamshaft Editor], I finally got time to write this for you. Hope you can still use it somewhere to fill a gap. Sorry it took so long to write but I did warn you it would. Thanks Marlene On Day 7 of the Canada 150 Tour (Monday, June 12, 2017), we had a special tour of Pioneer Log Homes, a family operated business established 44 years ago by Brian Reid Sr. and that has been in Williams
Lake for the past 24 years. It is featured in the TV show "The Timber Kings" that began airing in 2014 featuring the artistry, craftsmanship and team that builds the log structures. The tour was arranged by Gerald Overton of the Quesnel VCCC Chapter who is also one of the employees of Pioneer Log Homes and friend of Brian Reid Sr. The tour took place at one of the 3 sites that Pioneer uses called the Sugar Cane Division just south of Williams Lake. The other two sites are Soda
Creek Division (which suffered major fire damage during the fires that went through the area this past summer) and 153 mile division. Presently they employ 42 people in Williams Lake. In one day they have 4-6 shifts going Monday through Friday. Some of the guys will come in on a Saturday to work on a project that they are trying to get done. Pioneer likes to train all their guys from the start as that way everyone does everything the same. Brian Reid Sr helped initiate a BC Training Program for log home building, an apprenticeship which consisted of 4 years carpentry and 2 years log and joinery specific courses in 1997.
3
We were given a 2 hour tour of the building site. We started off with a 30 minute demonstration by Brian Reid Junior, master craftsman, (also known as Little Man) in "Carver's Corner" where he carved a small tree out of a block of cedar using only a small chain saw, a buffing grinder and a torch burner. On display in this shed were cedar carvings such as eagles, bears, totem poles and a King Neptune. The rest of the tour involved watching and listening about how the log homes are built as presented by Peter Arnold, owner Brian Reid Sr. and Gerald Overton. That day there were 5 houses under construction on the site. Most of the cedar is Western cedar and most of it comes from the Bella Coola area. The logs are kept in the yard approximately one year to season and air dry before they are worked on. All the logs are hand peeled with a drawknife. The preliminary constructions are performed in Williams Lake. No chinking is used. Instead, a small handmade grove between the logs is inserted with insulation. 3 stationary cranes on site are used for placing the logs and they are operated by specially trained personnel using remote controls from the ground. Most of the buildings constructed are one story. The
buildings are constructed on site and once the log structure is completed to perfection, each log is tagged and numbered. It is then taken apart and transported to the permanent building site and reassembled by number. It takes 5 guys approximately 12-14 weeks to create a 3000 sq.ft house and a team of men approximately 2 - 3 days to reassemble the same on a foundation. Some of the places that they have shipped homes to are in Canada: - BC, Alberta, Quebec, USA: - Nevada, Colorado, California, Oregon, Missouri, Alaska;; overseas such as Australia, Europe and Japan. Generally they do 40 structures in 1 year (14 million square feet of log construction). Other structures they make are playhouses, gazebos, barns, carports, garages, gateways, lodges, hotels and restaurants etc. All this produces material that they can't use. When asked what they do with all their piles of scrap wood, wood chips and sawdust, we were told they pay to haul the waste to the Co generator plant in Williams Lake. When asked if they get a cut on their power bill, we were told no. It was a way to get rid of all their waste and they had to pay for that privilege.

After the tour of the Sugar Cane Division, we went to the Tourism Discovery
Center for a BBQ put on by Pioneer Log Homes. The $10.00 each we had paid with our registration for this dinner ended up as a donation that went to the BC Kidney Foundation. On display was the Cedar Rocket handcrafted from a Western Red Cedar log. The project started in 2014 and was finished in fall of 2015. During 2016 it was on tour throughout Canada and the USA. It is powered by 8 lithium batteries and 2 turbines. Weight is approximately 2000 lbs., most of which is the weight of the batteries. In 2018, it will be put up for auction at Barrett Jackson and all the proceeds will be going to a variety of veteran's charities. made by Bob Chambers.
Del Holbrook [In red jacket] as VCCC
President also thank them and presented
them with a check for the Kidney
Foundation.
This stop was a highlight of the tour as everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It was a pleasure for the fans of "The Timber Kings" to meet some of the stars.

Adopt A Road Sunday September 24th This time John & Laverne Duerksen hosted the crew by serving coffee at their
place before the road cleanup started. They were treated to coffee, cookies and
zucchini cake provided by Laverne and Marg McNaughton.
John wasn’t sure exactly but thought 18 club members came out to help.
With the road being washed out between the school and the Heffley
Creek Store not currently providing a through road to Sun Peaks the
amount of garbage collected this time was significantly less than in the
past.
Following clean up the crew went to the Rayleigh Pub for lunch.
Keith was missing from the picture on the left
as he was acting as the photographer

John MacWhinnie November 15, 1946 – September 26 2017
John always had a smile and enjoyed
joining the the gang for the Group Breakfasts
at Dennys.
His passion in life were trains, hot wheels,
cars and fishing. Before he moved to Kamloops in 1995 from Victoria he
raced cars, was a cub leader, boated, camped and fished with his family
and belonged to different car and train clubs.
He was happy being a member of the Kamloops Chapter of the Vintage
Car. He loved his 1968 AMC AMX. It was quite a rare car and it was a winner at HNITC this year. I understand he had owned a similar car when he was younger.

I have nearly 20 mostly 1950's cars and trucks yet to move. I also have literally tons of parts and vintage
motors to move as well. The motors range from 1920's Dodge and Chevs, through to 1970's Mopars. I don't
have time to search to find people's requests, its best if they just come and have a look themselves. Fire sale
prices, but you have to be capable of doing your own thing. I have been selling nearly complete cars for as low
as $200 for example.
