MEMTRON INPUT COMPONENTS

OVERVIEW

A membrane switch generally

consists of two polyester films that

are screen printed with conductive

ink to form the circuit layers of the

membrane. A spacer layer that is

die-cut at contact points is then

laminated between two circuits.

The die-cut holes in the spacer layer

permit a touch of the finger to close

the contact, which in turn completes

the circuit. Upon release, the circuit is

broken. Memtron leverages 30 years

of experience in the design and

manufacture of membrane switches.

AND INTRODUCING… EXCITING TECHNOLOGIES IN CONJUNCTION WITH OUR PARTNER COMPANIES

http://www.screenkeys.com/ Programmable LCD & TFT key switches with an integrated graphical LCD display and multi-coloured LED backlighting mounted on a push button mechanism.

ScreenKeys are designed to ensure easy integration in OEM designs. Programmable ScreenKeys bring benefit by reducing the number of key switches required in a console to implement the user interface, thus minimizing panel real estate.

32 x 16 pixels (RGB16) for fast changing graphics and text where immediate operator recognition is a primary requirement.

36 x 24 pixels (RGB24) higher resolution where finer graphics detail & more text options are preferred (4 lines of text may be displayed).

ScreenKey technology is a must for any product requiring a user interface. ScreenKey technology is suited to a wide variety of industries and applications, such as:

Media and Broadcasting Production Military & Defense Telecommunications POS and Hospitality Process Control Financial Services / Stock Traders

TouchSense® Technology for Touch ScreensThe process of authentication or the fundamental skills of communicatingand learning can be enhanced with a touch screen that provides tactilefeedback. Devices that provide synchronized sound and graphics upontouch are more intuitive, personal and satisfying. Now the predictivesensation of touch and response can be applied to touch screens toheighten interaction and usability.

Key Advantages• Creates the perception of touching physical buttons and switches• Works with a wide range of touch screen sizes and technologies• Provides fast, tactile response synchronized with sound and graphics• Enhances usability, particularly for noisy or distracting environments• Helps improve user performance, productivity, and safety• Programmability can be used to further enhance usability• Diminishes the effects of device complexity• Generates performance and differentiation advantages

Adding Touch Feedback to Touch ScreensUser interaction is about creating an effective human-machine interface (HMI) that leadsto rapid and accurate task completion or a more satisfying experience. Research has foundthat, when compared to single-mode voice and visual applications, multimodal applicationsare easier and more intuitive to use. Yet, in the world of computers and digital devices andcontrols, haptic feedback is often lost.

As a licensed OEM integrator of TouchSense technology by Immersion, Advanced InputSystems can add touch sensations to interactions that have been devoid of tactile confirmation—like touch screens—to provide a rich, multisensory experience.

A variety of actuators and controllers are available to impart tactile sensations to touchscreen users. The correct choice of actuator depends on the touch screen size, touch technology, sealing requirements, and other mechanical and environmental factors.

Contact us to learn more about how tactile feedback can be added to enhance and distinguishyour touch screen application. We produce custom-designed human-machine interfaces forspecific customer applications, utilizing any user-input technology and any display technology.

TouchSense proprietary technology causes the touch screento vibrate, creating the perception of pressing physicalswitches, emulating crisp qualities and particular force andpush-away characteristics. Based on software or firmwareprogramming, touching different virtual objects on thescreen produces the desired, context-sensitive feel for users.

Programmability Enhances ProductivityThe programmability of TouchSense technology can beused to further enhance usability, particularly for noisy ordistracting environments. For example, pressing the Enterbutton, no matter where it appears on the screen, couldalways produce a consistent, strong, and crisp tactilesensation, while buttons for other actions could have adifferent feel, helping the user to know instinctively whetherthey’ve made the correct selection.

Create and Combine Touch SensationsRich touch sensations can be created by combining individualeffects of varying frequency, waveform, magnitude, andduration. This flexibility means that touch screens can beused for many types of applications by providing a widerange of response:

• Graphical buttons can simulate the familiar up anddown clicks of physical buttons

• Menu items can be programmed to supply a lightpulse sensation or a confirming push-back responsewhen pressed

• Control switches can exhibit increasing or decreasingvibrations corresponding to motor or fan speed, volume level, lighting levels, or other parameters

• Enter, Next, and other major and minor functions cansupply a consistent feel throughout an application

• Scrolling displays can provide a stop sensation whenthe first or last items have been reached

• Switch controls can exhibit a pop effect

Advanced Input Systems can help Original EquipmentManufacturers heighten the level of interactivity andbuild a more engaging user experience with TouchSense®

technology. This programmable technology by Immersion®

adds tactile feedback to touch screens. And sensory-basedtouch screens that “touch back”, supply distinct benefitsand give users a new and more satisfying experience—onethat’s more interactive, engaging, intuitive, and fun.

The Perception of Pressing Physical SwitchesWith haptic technology—integrating touchsensations into thehuman-machineinterface—a user doesn’tjust feel the hard surfaceof the touch screen.Instead, graphical buttonsseem to depress andrelease. The result is amore intuitive, natural, and multisensoryexperience.

Greater Usability Across All ApplicationsBecause touch screens are already effective at integratinginput and display functionality, increasing perceived qualityand user satisfaction requires new technology. Using touchfeedback, touch screens for kiosk and point-of-sale (POS)applications can provide more definitive transactionalconfirmations, which can improve customer satisfactionand reduce staffing requirements. With touch screens thattouch back, any application can become more interactiveand personal. Connecting with users’ sense of touch attractsthem in a way that sight and sound alone cannot.

Commercial and Industrial ControlsHaptic touch screens can be used in a variety of businessapplications such as retail and service POS, hospitality, industrial control, and emergency or command centeroperation. In these types of applications, the sense of touchprovides reflex-rate response in milliseconds, allowingmore efficient performance, especially when the operatorcannot always be looking at the screen. Touch feedbackcan support improvements such as reduced errors, higherproductivity, and lower training times.

Because understanding through touch is instinctive, touch feedback can reduce the need for focused attention, allowing safer operation for many applications. For medicaland military/aerospace applications, even a smallimprovement in ease of use, error reduction, or glancetime can have a significant impact on safety.

Enriching Touch Screen User Experience

Touch screens are popular because theyare easy to use, can be dynamicallyconfigured, and are cost-effective. Yet,as good an input device as it is, a touchscreen lacks the confirming tactile feelthat physical buttons and controls provide.

Now add the confirming tactile feel thatphysical buttons and controls provide

When touch screen buttons seemto depress and release, the resultis a more intuitive and naturalmultisensory experience.

Gaming applications can be more fun andengaging with touch screens that providetactile feedback.

With the added confirmation that touchprovides, users can give more attention tocustomers. Tactile cues can prompt usersthrough selling steps without interferingwith customer rapport, encouragingincreased sales.

When the user touches the screen, ananalog signal is sent to the touch screencontroller, which supplies information onthe precise screen location where contactwas made. This location information issent to the host application, whichcommands the haptic controller toplay a specified tactile effect.

Applicable to All Types of Touch Screens

Programmable haptic technology can supply fast response synchronized withsound and graphical image changes. Clarity and accuracy are unaffected fora wide range of touch screen sizes. The technology can be applied to all typesof touch screens including capacitive, resistive (4-, 5-, and 8- wire), surfaceacoustic wave, and infrared.
