District now accepting online payments2012-2013academic year

Parents and students used to checking their grades and homework assignments online will be using a new program this year.Pearson PowerSchool will replace ProgressBook as the portal to student

information for parents, students and teachers. The school district educational information technology consortium,

North Coast Council (NCC), is converting to the new student information system. The online gradebook is part of that system and comes to districts at no additional cost.“Being part of the overall student information system, the gradebook

will be completely integrated,” said Bay Village Schools superintendent, Clint Keener. “It really is better than trying to have two different programs work together.”Keener also serves on the board of the North Coast Council, which is

wholly owned by 34 member school districts. NCC provides technical support for fiscal services, student information and human resources data management and reporting that state and federal laws require of districts. In addition, the consortium provides services for school libraries, technology training for school staff members and many other services that individual districts would find challenging to fund on their own.

All-day Kindergarten meets community demand

Parents can now add dollars to student accounts to pay for lunches, fees, tickets and field trips with Pay for It, an online program that will accept credit card and checking account payments.Optional features of Pay for It include an alert email when funds are

getting low, monthly statements, the ability to set up recurring payments and the ability to view lunch purchases over a 30-day period.Parents will need a valid email address, their credit card (Visa,

Mastercard or Discover) or checking account information and their child’s six-digit student identification number, which will also be used as their child’s PIN number in the cafeteria line. The fee for this convenience is 4.30% per transaction for credit card

payments, or a flat $1.75 fee when using an electronic check. Parents can find a link to Pay for It on the district website, along with additional information, at:

www.bayvillageschools.com/payforit

Four all-day Kindergarten classes will begin this fall. The extra half-day option will be funded by family-paid tuition. While it appears we may fill the 96 available spaces, no initial appli-

cants were denied entry for lack of an opening.

The Bay Village City School District is one of the few public districts around where faculty from Kindergarten through Grade 12 don the colors of their college alma maters, march in and attend the high school graduation ceremony.

Imagine the pride students must feel knowing that their teachers, including those who nurtured them back in grade school, come to watch them finish that 13-year journey to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas.

“It shows we care about their total growth and success,” said Barb Woodburn, fourth-grade teacher. “We’re not finished with you when you leave our classroom. Our district is truly a family, and this ceremony is most meaningful for all of us.”

Board approves 1.96 mill bond issue request November ballot issue asks for dollars to upgrade building infrastructure

-7-

Search for children with disabilitiesEarly detection and services help children reach potential The Bay Village City School Dis-trict seeks to identify, locate and evaluate all children from birth to age 21 who may have a disability.Disabilities include conditions like

hearing impairments, speech or lan-guage impairments, specific learn-ing disabilities, emotionally dis-turbed, multiple disabilities, mental retardation, autism, traumatic brain injury, and other health and physical impairments.Anyone who knows of a Bay

Village child who may have a disability and may need special education and related services can call 440-617-7300. District officials will talk with the parents to determine if an evaluation is necessary.

Modular classroom addition at Normandy School adds space

A comprehensive upgrade of school building infrastructure – systems like boilers, electrical, and ventilation replace-ments – is covered in a bond issue request approved by the Bay Village Board of Education for placement on the November 6 ballot. If passed, the bond issue will raise $16.8 million, with the

bonds paid back over a 25-year period. The millage rate will be about 1.96 mills, costing homeowners approxi-mately $5 per month, or $60 annually, for every $100,000 of home valuation.Various dollar amounts and borrowing timelines were

discussed by board members prior to their final decision. The goal was to keep the dollar request as low as possible while providing the upgrades that would keep the district’s buildings in good service for years to come. The district annually spends operating funds on a consis-

tent cycle for replacement of roofing, windows, pavement, and other building features that experience wear and tear on a regular basis.

However, boilers, wiring, plumbing and ventilation systems represent exceptionally large investments when replacements become necessary. These large projects cannot be so easily completed on an incremental and rotating cycle.“I believe this plan is the best for our community,” said

Keener. “We do not see huge increases in enrollment, as our city is fully developed. The plan adds some space, but it mainly upgrades the mechanical systems so that the buildings will be safe, comfortable and useful for the next couple decades and more.”Detailed information about the plans for building up-

grades can be found on the district’s website at:

An online bond issue cost calculator, where residents can enter their own indi-vidual property valuation, can also be found at this web address.

www.bayvillageschools.com/BondIssueOr scan QR code:

The brick enclosing the modular ad-dition will closely match existing building brick.

Four additional classrooms will be available at Normandy Elementary this fall thanks to a modern, modular addition that cost the district about one-third of what a similar addition using traditional construction would cost.A new full-day kindergarten option helped drive the need for more space, and

modular construction was an excellent and cost-effective alternative (cost was about $95/square foot once furnished, versus an estimated $195/square foot for traditional construction of the 4,000 square foot structure). The addition is directly attached to the west end of Normandy Elementary so that

students need not go outside the building to enter. Four second-grade classes have been assigned to the space for the coming school year. District officials are hopeful that the rooms will be ready on the first day of

school, but a back-up plan is in place in case there is a brief delay.Find answers to frequently asked questions and follow the construction progress
