MAY 9, 2015
Building Exterior Design ConsiderationsConsiderations regarding selection of exterior building materials and systems include:• SDA Materials and Systems Standards• Performance• Durability• Ease of Operation and Maintenance• Relative costAesthetic considerations for the exterior design include:• Context – Physical, cultural, and historical• Input from Project Stakeholders
MAY 9, 2015
Building Exterior Design ConceptsThree conceptual options have been developed for consideration by project stakeholders• Options are conceptual in nature• Options are not intended to be an “ala carte” menu• At this stage, Options should not be interpreted too literally
but, rather, are intended to suggest a direction in which to take the design of the new TCHS
• Selected Option will be developed and refined over the next few months
MAY 9, 2015
Building Exterior Design ConceptsOption No. 1• Use of more traditional/
classical design elements, including some drawn from old TCHS
• Columns and Loggia• Entrance Portal• Tower element (could
include clock)• Traditional red brick, white
windows, ornamentation
MAY 9, 2015
Option No. 2• More modern vocabulary• Clean straight lines• Expression of structure• Less (or no) red brick,
introduction of other colors and materials
• “Modern” windows and other glazing elements
Building Exterior Design Concepts
MAY 9, 2015
Option No. 3• Use of non-traditional
design elements• Expressionism over
Functionalism• Metaphorical rather than
literal• Multivalence – “loaded”
design elements which are open to personal reinterpretation
