Academy Development & Structure
NAF’s academy leaders along with advisory board members participate in ongoing
collaboration and professional learning to build the academy teams’ capacity to
develop high-quality NAF academies. For academy teams to meet the goal of
developing a model NAF academy, professional learning must occur on a regular
basis when teams meet as professional learning communities.
You will be working with your NAF Director --- more details and training
NAF provides many resources for academies to develop their leaders and to continue to increase
opportunities for academy students.
• Setting up the academy information in ASH data center

Curriculum & Instruction
NAF provides a rigorous, industry-validated, career-themed, student-centric
curriculum. NAF courses incorporate current industry standards and practices,
literacy strategies, work-based learning and enrichment activities, and STEM
integration to ensure that students develop fundamental college and career
readiness skills. NAF's instructional practices foster cross-curriculum
collaboration so that students can make connections across subject areas.
Might be NAF courses in the NAFTRACK system, PLTW for engineering, Florida CTE frameworks
with Programs of Study classes, Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement, Cambridge, etc.
You and your teachers will need to create classes in NAFTRACK.
Your NAF Director will direct you to the curriculum you will be using.
NAF Educational Design
Advisory Board
Businesspeople, higher education and community leaders volunteer on local advisory
boards to help students prepare for college and career. Advisory board members
collaborate with educators to inform curricula, help organize work-based learning
activities, and are academy advocates and the faces of NAF in the community.
Through advisory boards, students have the opportunity to build relationships with
mentors early and learn from successful adults. Advisory Boards will help support
Work Based Learning.
There are three NAF Miami-Dade advisory boards –
• STEM for Engineering, Health Sciences, IT
• Finance
• Hospitality & Tourism
• Note: there is a TEAM LEADER training after each board meeting.
Meet every other month, you will receive a schedule from your NAF Director
NAF Educational Design
Work-Based Learning
NAF's approach to work-based learning is structured as a continuum of experiences that
brings together the education and the workplace to prepare young people for the careers
of tomorrow.
Through high-quality partnerships with employers and community leaders, NAF students
participate in three phases of work-based learning: career awareness, career exploration,
and career preparation.
Work Based Learning for NAF Academies to be considered quality academy:
• Guest Speakers
• Job Shadow Day – Feb.
• Annual Student Industry Conference April 2019
• Various field trips, college tours
• Some activities are organized by district staff, but schools should organize guest speakers, field
trips, career days at school, mock interviews etc. (working with Advisory Board members.)

These 4 elements of the NAF Educational Design are what makes a NAF academy – a NAF academy.
There is a lot of freedom and flexibility within these 4 elements, and it’s all built with the goal of improving schools,
improving communities, and providing life-changing opportunities for our students.
