Combat Veterans and CombatWounded Veterans, the men andwomen who literally put their lives onthe line for the United States and itscitizens, make a huge sacrifice, andthey do not want to talk about it somuch. But ask about their golf game! This is something that CombatWounded Veteran Steve Surface andhis father Combat Veteran StephenSurface viscerally understand.Stephen, who served in Vietnam, andmore recently as a past Commanderof the VFW says, “A Vet will talk toanother Vet before anyone elsebecause we understand theyunderstand. Out here on the golfcourse, it brings us together.”

Turf Warriors, founded byCombat Wounded Veteran SteveSurface, is a unique organization thatallows Combat and CombatWounded Veterans to focus onsomething that is both challengingand fulfilling – their golf game andthe camaraderie they enjoy! TurfWarriors is what Purple Heartrecipient and Vietnam Veteran Rudy

Salis calls, “going old school,”adding, “we are Veterans helpingVeterans.” (Rudy also has been alongtime supporter of AVAST,another organization that helpsVeterans in many ways.) TurfWarriors’ mission is for CombatVeterans to help each other tobecome successful in life, educationand careers.

“Golf doesn’t heal our CombatVeterans but when someone puts agolf club in your hands and you startswinging you tend to feel better andmore relaxed. You’re thoughts are onhitting that little golf ball as straightand far as you can. What golf does isbring Combat and Combat WoundedVeterans, along with their family to aplace where they can talk to eachother, feel relaxed, get some exerciseand enjoy life,” writes Steve, whosecandid article was featured in SouthernGolf Central magazine (Volume 6,Issue 8). Exposure to multipleroadside IEDs in February 2011 leftSteve with injuries that included amild traumatic brain injury, but he wasable to work through it and return toSouthern Afghanistan to finish his 12-

month deployment as CombatVeteran. Once deployment was over, though, Steve found that a new battlewas before him – the battle to feelnormal again. When a fellow CombatWounded Veteran invited him toexperience something new and comeout and play golf, he found that itlessened his anxiety. “I can’tremember how many golf balls I wentthrough that day, I came home with

zero but in a great mood.” In 2015, Steve and his wife Stacy

decided to start their own “pay back”for other Veterans and startedgathering used golf clubs and bags sothat Combat Veterans who wouldotherwise never have the opportunitycould play golf.

Steve explains why it’s soimportant for Combat Veterans andCombat Wounded Veterans to be able

to focus on something as normal asimproving one’s golf game. Hewrote, “We come from a war zoneand then are expected to go back towho we were prior to deployment. Weare young adults who have seenhorrible things and now have to livewith it, without showing weakness ortelling our spouses and family what wehave actually seen or had to dobecause we don’t want to lose theinnocent respect, moral and honorthat our best friends, the love of ourlife, our families have for us.”

Turf Warriors – More Than a GameSteve Surface invited us to come

out to Turf Warriors’ second CombatVeterans Golf Clinic at East LakeWoodlands Golf Course on Tuesday,June 21st. Turf Warriors meet at EastLake Woodlands Country Club every3rd Tuesday of the month at 3p.m. The cost to the Veterans iszero. They get about 30- to 45-minute lesson from a PGA Pro; thenplay the course with other Veterans.

Initially, the clinics were first heldat Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Course, which still supports the organizationas well as the children of Veteransthrough its First Tee program. Stevesays that East Lake Woodlands Golf

Club manager, Dan Riker, immediately agreed to support TurfWarriors. East Lake Woodlands’ PGAGolf Pro Kent Magilligan is happy todonate his time, saying, “I relate verywell to these guys. I will hit my 23-year anniversary with the Air Force inSeptember. And, golf, as frustrating asit is – it’s peaceful and it’s a veryindividualized game.

The goal of Turf Warriors: “Wewant one clinic in every county inFlorida, where Veterans can cometogether and enjoy the game and thecamaraderie once a month at no costto them. We are looking for GolfClubs that will donate tee times andGolf Pros who will donate an hour ofinstruction,” says Steve. PinellasCounty is just the start! Upcomingclinics are being put in place at SilverDollar Golf & Trap Club in Odessa, which should start late July, and atHernando Oaks in Brooksvillesometime in August.

Not only is Turf Warriors insearch of golf clubs throughoutFlorida to get involved, they also areseeking Combat Veterans or CombatWounded Veterans who can take aleadership role in each clinic. And ifyou know of anyone who owns abuilding that could be used for indoor

golf, please contact Turf Warriors.Steve explains that there are manyCombat Wounded Veterans who can’tplay golf outside, such as those whohave suffered burns or brain injuriesthat make them sensitive to brightsunlight. There are many ways to helpand Turf Warriors gladly accepts usedgolf clubs and bags and monetarydonations are used to purchase new

golf bags.

Combat and Combat WoundedVeterans are invited to participateand can find more informationonline at www.TurfWarriors.org.Community members who wouldlike to support Turf Warriors, please contact Steve Surface [email protected].
