New Taipei City with New Features of Tourist Activities

As the largest administrative division in Taiwan, New Taipei City has one-sixth of the Taiwanese population. Each of the 29 city districts contains a plethora of tourism resources, including beautiful mountains and seas. Rich in natural resources and cultural heritage, the city is full of vitality and has a great deal of potential for development. Each district in the city has its own local cultural industry, historical background and unique tourist attractionsthe internationally diverse culture in Tamsui, sky lanterns and railways in Pingxi, the centennial old street in Sanxia, ceramic traditions in Yingge, and a gold mining history in Ruifang and Jiufen. • 2It is my belief that travel means more than just exploring beautiful sceneries or seeking gustatory exhilaration. Travel is really a reflection of ones philosophy on life, manifesting a persons predilection, taste and aspired lifestyle through a chosen destination and a way of traveling. Meanwhile, the physical journey itself takes the

traveler inside a local culture, opening his eyes to a possible different way of life.

New Taipei City boasts an impressive coastline and abundance of mountain forests

with a rich and inimitable cultural heritage. This year, the New Taipei City Government

presents an all-inclusive travel book to give travelers a perspicuous and in-depth account

of what the city has to offer, including the hottest restaurants and tourist attractions

in the municipal and local townships, as well as interesting history stories and travel

pointers. Through this guide book, you will begin to feel your heartbeatfor New

    Taipei City.

In recent years, the city has devoted much attention and resources to the construction

and planning of riverside and mountain cycling lanes, hiking tracks and other related

facilities to offer visitors an whole new eco-friendly travel experience. Other efforts

by the New Taipei City Government and Tourism and Travel Department to upgrade

the citys tourism include improvement of hot spring services, historical monument

renovation, outdoor and cultural activity programs, factory tourism development and

star restaurants map illustrationall to turn New Taipei City into the best tourist city in

    Taiwan.

For backpacker travelers, a transportation network incorporating the MRT, the railway,

the bus system and ferryboats to make direct transfers available between popular

tourist attractions is underway. The Tourism and Travel Department has also set up an

official travel website, revamped the tourist information system, enhanced tour guide

services and pushed for local hotel and hostel reviews, all the while giving full support

to the production of movies and drama series in order to bring the citys unique appeal

to audience around the world. New Taipei City is indeed on the rise to becoming a top-

    notch international travel destination!

Feel the Heartbeat, for New Taipei City.

You wont believe how nice the people are here!

Ive been living and working in Taiwan for over 15 years. I specialize in childrens TV programs and travel shows that have aired in over 25 countries. Ive seen a large part of the world but like many foreigners who never planned to stay in Taiwan, Im

addicted to this island and the people who live on it.

I never thought Taiwan would be so interesting. Is often the

statement I hear from friends, family and business associates from

abroad that visit Taiwan. The funny thing is, they dont come here to

visit Taiwan, they come to visit friends, family or do business and plan to go to China,

Bali or Thailand once their visiting is done. However, once here, they do a day trip by

subway to walk the boardwalk in Tamsui and enjoy the seafood, the roadside treats,

the markets and the excitement of everything happening there, while still taking in the

beauty of a stroll by the ocean.

It was a fun day in Tamsui, theyll say in their phone call home to friends and family

in the evening; always ending with, And the people there were so warm and friendly!

Tamsui keeps a special place in my heart too, as my wife and I had one of our first dates

there and it proved to be a truly romantic and eventful place to go when falling in love.

After a slew of business meetings, its always nice to be able to escape away to Jiufen

walk through the maze of old buildings and relax with a tea while taking in the view

and watching others stroll by. Its one of those unique experiences that foreigners

dont expect to have when they set out to Asia. It too is often followed by a phone call

home that ends with, You wont believe how nice the people are here!

Places like Jiufen and Tamsui and many others in this book are the reason that New

Taipei City and Taiwan truly surprise the unsuspecting traveler. They end up coming

as a stop over, to somewhere else where they plan to spend their true vacation, but

they always go home saying how they wished theyd spent more time in Taiwan and

You wouldnt believe how nice the people are there!

  • Where the Sea Meets the Sky The Aesthetic of the North CoastThe sea is always comforting when you need some stress relief. The sapphire ocean water and soft sea breeze with a slightly salty tang of sea air are simply elevating to the spirit. On the weekend, you can peddle on the bicycle along the bicycle path, slowly away from downtown skyscrapers and towards the poetic sunset over the estuary in Bali and Tamsui, which has become a favored hang-out place for young couples. In the northern-most reaches of the island, there are fine cafs and seafood delicacies and windmill parks in Shimen, an historical street, duck delicacies, hot springs and Juming Museum in Jinshan and, not to forget, Yeliu Geopark in Wanli. Along the North Coast is a stream of beautiful scenic views, cultural heritage and unforgettable local cuisines.

The northeast coast is a great place to go for water sports, too. Every summer, at the Fulong Beach, there is an annual Fulong Sand Sculpture Festival and Gongliao Hohaiyan Rock Festival where you will have tons of beach fun!

  • A Journey through TimeSanxia Old Street and Beautiful Flower ViewingSanxia Old Street will take you on a journey through time. The dye factories still have their trademarks written on their buildings, demonstrating their once prosperous era. The Qingshui Zushi Temple (or Temple of Divine Ancestor) is often feted as the palace of oriental art of which the dragon pillars, wall paintings, and figure sculptures are all exquisite artistic rendition of traditional Chinese culture.

Banqiaos The Lin Family Mansion and Garden is another historical site worth visiting. Its pavilions, buildings and artificial gardens make visitors feel like they are in a historical theatre. Yingge is the capital of northern Taiwans ceramics industry and a great place to immerse in Taiwans cultural heritage and learn how to make pottery and buy souvenirs. In springtime, we have what the locals call the May Snow in Wulai, Sanzhi, and Tucheng, as flowers blossom wildly over the mountain hills. In Wanli and Jinshan, perennial hot springs rejuvenate the body all-year-round. In early autumn, fields of silver grass softly sway in the air with the breeze by the Caoling Historic Trail in Gongliao.

This historical culture makes New Taipei City a place filled with attractions and cultural treasures to discover.

Wonderland in the MountainsSeek Happiness with Pingxi Sky Lanterns, Relish the Mining History of Jinguashi and Jiufen After playing by the sea, how about a trip into the mountains? Tofu delicacies on the Shenkeng Old Street, unusual stilt houses that defy Natures imposed limitations in Shiding, mining trails along the small stations on the Pingxi Rail Line, sky lanterns floating in the sky at the annual Lantern Festival, and peony-like, subtly fragrant camellia in Shuangxi blossoming during Chinese New Year, etc. are all waiting for you to see and to experience.

As you go further, the intertwining mountain and coastal views in Jiufen will leave you in awe, and following the mountain steps suffused with the delicious smell of taro balls will lead to you great spots looking out to the misty mountain tops in Keelung. In winter nights, you can enjoy a pot of hot tea while musing over the fishermen on the sea. Historical sites such as Waste Gas Pipe, Gold Waterfall, and the Remains of the Thirteen Levels in Jinguashi are filled with stories of the gold rush. You can also fulfill your gold rush fantasies at the Gold Ecological Park.

The Stories of TamsuiFor people living in Taipei City, Tamsui is great for a day out. Only 30 minutes from Taipei Downtown by the MRT, the beautiful riverside view of the historical and cultural town that impresses even international visitors is easily within reach.

Tamsui is also called Hobe, or estuary, in the aboriginal language of Pingpu tribe to describe the geography of the location. Following the Spanish and Dutch occupations, the British came and set up a consulate, bringing more western culture influence and colonial legacy on top of its predecessors. The European architecture that they left behind also left us with a precious historical legacy. Tamsui Historical Site Park is one of the foremost tourist attractions, which includes The Fort San Domingo, Little White House, The Hobe Fort, Aletheia University, and Tamsui Fishermans Wharf. Taiwanese pop icon Jay Chous film, Secret, was filmed here, adding a more romantic touch to the area and making a point of interest for film and pop music fans.

    10

  • The story of The Fort San DomingoWhich spot best represents Tamsui? The Fort San Domingo is surely on the top of the list. The Fort San Domingo is over 400 years old and a first-class historical site in Taiwan. The Fort San Domingo is divided into two areas, one of which is the British Consulate situated on the east side of the fort. It was built from red bricks and has an arch structure with a slanted rooftopa very European style of structure. The interior of The Fort San Domingo exhibits antiques. Hopefully this will add to the visitors understandings of For t San Domingos his torical and cultural significance.

The Lin Family Mansion and Garden - Unsurpassed Beauty of a Bygone Age

The Lin Family Mansion and Garden is located in the Banqiao district of New Taipei City. It is the most well-preserved Qing dynasty garden in Taiwan and a rare classical building within the Greater Taipei area.

The building material of The Lin Family Mansion and Garden is some of the finest quality wood in China and Taiwan, and its elegant design and structure make it one of the rarest classical Qing dynasty architecture still present in Taiwan. In 1985, the Ministry of the Interior officially declared it a second-class historical site. Thanks to city development, the gardens periphery has become one of the hottest shopping districts in New Taipei City while tourism continues to boom with an ever-convenient public transportation system. It will indeed be a special experience to come and appreciate the unsurpassed classical beauty of The Lin Family Mansion and Garden in the busy modern time.

Museum by the mountainside of Jinshan will impress people with the artists artistic

    The Original Wulai

Wulai is also called Ulay, which means boiling water in the Atayal tribes language. It is one of the favorite spots of the residents in Greater Taipei and also the origin of hot springs in the southern Taipei basin.

The most attractive part about Wulai is the varied sceneries that alter with the seasons. You can see all sorts of cherry blossoms in the spring. The streams in the valley allow you to catch fish and shrimp in the summer. The red maple leaves are a beautiful sight in the fall. And the hot springs are available in the winter. These are all attractions in Wulai that make people keep coming back for more.

  • Pingxi Branch Rail Line - Romantic Trip from Shifen to JingtongThe Pingxi Branch Rail Line is one of only four branch rail lines left in Taiwan. The rail line is awarded with a two-star rating for its attraction-worthy features of small towns, natural sights, old streets, mining culture and sky lanterns along the rail line. All these make this place a tourist magnet. You do not need to prepare too much when you visit Pingxi, as you will invariably go home carrying a bag full of original expe r ience s and a l a s t i n g n e w memory.

Sanxia Qingshui Zushi TempleSanxias Qingshui Zushi Temple is the most beautiful temple in the Greater Taipei area. After being damaged on several occasions, renowned artist Mei-Shu Li led the renovation and finally unveiled the magnificent structure we see today. Looking at the interior of the temple, you will find marvelously carved-out sculptures with amazing details. After several times of renovation, it is now the temple that uses the most pillars in all of Taiwan.

Many believers still pray at the temple. It was built for Qingshui Zushi, the guardian of Anxi, Fujian. There are several stories about him. The most popular is that he was born in Fujian and was named Chao-Ying Chen. He became a Buddhist at a young age and was well-loved by the people who, after he passed away, built a temple to commemorate him. He was a folk hero who fought against the Mongolians in the Sung Dynasty. Ming Tai Zu proclaimed him Lord Protector, and the Anxi people called him Divine Ancestor. If you come to Sanxia, do not forget to visit the temple.

Picture the scene that various men lift a palanquin, inside seated a god statue, and run into the sea. This unique custom called the Port Purification Ritual in Yeliu. It is said that a shipwreck happened 100 years ago had killed over 300 people. So the God in Baoan Shrine instructed the villagers to row the boats off shore and guard the coast line. He further commanded through a psychic that he will tour the sea himself to protect them. So the tradition becomes an annual event to pray for the fishermens safety.

The lunar March 23rd each year is a big day in Taiwan as its the birthday of Mazu, the Chinese Goddess of the Sea. On that day, the statue of Mazu will be sitting in a palanquin and tour around each town to spread out her blessings

If you ever want to see a real tea plantation or do tea tasting at an origin town, you will see a spread of tea plantation on both sides while driving down on Provincial Highway No.9 to Shiding. In Shiding, "Diaojiaolou", or stilt house, a multi-story building hanging over the riverbed, is another must-see. Of course, once in Pinglin, world-class Baozhong tea and creative tea cuisine are not to be missed.

The centuries-old myths of the kite spirit in Sanxia and the Yingge boulder in Yingge have been broken, but the long tradition of masterful craftsmanship in these towns is still going strong. In Sanxia, there is Qingshui Zushi Temple, or the so-called "art palace of the East". As for Yingge, the town has been called "The Jingdezhan of Taiwan" for its once-vigorous ceramic

and pottery industry. What is even better is that there are DIY pottery sessions all over town.

Yeliu has the most bizarre topography, with geological wonders such as "The Queens Head", "The Princess Head", "The Fairy Shoe", "The Elephant Rock" and many others. Along the northeast coastline, beautiful beaches, blue ocean water and exciting water sports will light up your day. Surfing is without a doubt one of the coolest sports in the summer. It is adrenaline-pumping for the surfer ready to conquer the ocean waves and exciting for the observers to watch. Located in the Jingshan area by the Pacific Ocean, the Shazhu Bay (or Zhongjiao Beach in the old days) is a large bay with a beautiful golden beach, where unique coral reef topography brings in strong ocean waves and regional sea breeze and ocean current make the bay a haven for surfing. The beach also has a water facility for washing and a rescue station. For all these reasons, the Shazhu Bay has become the new surfing paradise among surfers in recent years. Meanwhile, the Summer Aquarian music festival is a summer highlight at the bay.

Nothing says more about a metropolis than its cuisine. In Taiwan, it is the night markets that speak the loudest about the city nightlife. Naturally, the Sanhe Night Market in

Sanchong, Zhonghe's Singnan Night Market and Yonghe's Yaye Night Market are all places youve got to go to experience the exuberant nightlife of New Taipei City.

    Cuisine &Night Markets

    Sanchong Sanhe Night Market

The entry way of Sanhe Night Market is at the intersection of Chongsin Road Section 1 and Zhongyang North Road and extends for half-kilometer to Sanhe Road. The market has hundreds of shops and roadside stands selling clothes, snacks, fun toys and gadgets and an encompassing variety of daily supplies. The night market street is parallel to Zhongyang North Road and located on the western end of Wunhua North Road. To the west is Wunhua North Road.

    Asha Dumplings

    Minghong Clam Consomm

Asha Dumplings dumplings are made of perfectly seasoned ground pork wrapped in chewy flour dough and served in a savory bowl of clear consomm with a splash of celery on the top, with crispy salty green onion cakes on the side. They are so good that they have made Asha Dumplings the most famous eatery of its kind on Wunhua Road. If it is not enough to enjoy the food here, you can always take some ready-made dumplings home.

Wanli Taiwanese Meatballs is not just popular in Sanhe Night Market; it is big in New Tapei City! Located in a side-alley between the very end of Zhongyang North Road and Wunhua North Road, the eatery sells only meatballs and meatball soup, a clear indication of their absolute confidence in their food. Marinated pork flank and bamboo shoots are stuffed in a moist yet chewy glutinous rice pocket soaked in a big wok of oil over low heat. The meat ball is then topped off with special sweet sauce flavored with soy sauce and garlic paste. Absolutely delicious!

Though a small shop selling only rice vermicelli and stewed pork sauce over rice, the eaterys sizable sign with a big oyster picture on it is hard to miss. Lovers of fresh oysters will certainly lose control over their exceptional oyster soup, and ginger slices are even offered to clear the palate, which normally would only be available at a seaside resor t . Theres no need to waste an entire day's journey heading to the harbor to taste freshly caught seafood.

    Laoshun Bakery

The molasses melts in your mouth and the sugary malt aroma holds on the palate for a long time, bringing back childhood memories with the candy. The boss of Weng Meiyu uses traditional method to create each and every batch. Malt is grown and processed into paste which is then added to hot glutinous rice and kept warm for 4 hours and pressed into a soupy juice to preserve the traditional flavor.

During traditional holidays in Xinzhuang, when youths at the temple are dressed as the Lord of the Hordes (Dazhongye) doing their religious ceremonial bits on the street, this salty cake is sold. The cakes sold by Laoshun are known far and wide. Even the Longshan Temple and Dalongdong order their sacrificial salty cakes from Laoshun. Tanglaoya Luwei

Lee Noodles Nanshijiao Chilled Tofu Pudding

Every culture has a way of using every part of an animal. In Euro-American places, its called processed meats. In Chinese markets, it's called luwei (or cured food snacks). Tanglaoya Traditional Luwei is at Lane 410 on Jingsin Street, whence you will see a bright yellow sign under which a small wheeled cart is loaded up with over ten kinds of cured food snacks. There is kelp, bean curd skin, pig's blood rice cakes and tempura, not to mention chicken's feet, duck's tongue, duck wings, duck neck and crispy intestines.

Take a left turn after you head out of Lane 410 and you'll see Lee Noodles about 50 m down the road. They are known for the way they cut the noodles. As they busily prepare the meals, you can see how the division of labor works. Some prepare ingredients, some cut them and some stir fry them. The trick is to get them on the plate and to the customer in a timely manner so they are hot and ready to eat. They are spongy, but not floury and portions are generous.

There is a stand that sells tofu pudding half-way into the night market. The purveyor is good with people and her shop has been open for years. All the usual toppings have been boiled and are ready to eat, and the most commonly ordered treats are peanut and green bean. In the scorching heat of summer, gulping down a bowl of sweet chilled green bean soup gives the most cooling and refreshing sensation. She also sells a cold rice noodle that is bouncy in texture and a wonderful topping choice for your tofu pudding.
