Bevere book study and discussion.
Children’s Sunday School
This Fall we will offer our All-in-One Sunday
School Curriculum for kids ages 4-12. These
lessons come complete with…
Active-learning experiences… to catch kids’
interest and teach them lessons they’ll
remember.
Interactive Bible stories… to help the
youngest kids grasp the real meaning of
Scripture.
Life applications… to encourage children to
use what they’ve learned.
Take-home handouts… so children can
share what they’ve learned with their
families.
Some of the Bible concepts covered will be:
God wants us to care for His world.
We are all special to God.
God wants us to be peacemakers.
Sometimes God surprises us.
As Sunday School teachers we look forward to
sharing the Good News with children and
allowing them to know that they will find this in
a loving and safe environment.

Dear Friends,
We arrived back in the States early on
Friday morning after a 15 hour non-stop flight.
Of course, the jet lag will continue for a few
more days. It was wonderful to connect with
family and friends again. It always is. Each time
we go back to South Africa we are reminded of
how enormously blessed we are to be able to
go back with some regularity. However, when
we return home to the States we have an
equally strong sense of being blessed to be
here in our adoptive home.
We always enjoy our vacation within
our vacation - our visit to the Kruger National
Park where the animals are free and humans
are confined overnight, and restricted in their
movement during the day. That is always an
escape that offers us a thrilling experience.
Next Sunday (September 4) Erica and I will
share some photos from this segment of our
experience during our Fellowship time after
worship. This park is the size of Massachusetts
and yields the wonder of seeing animals in a
completely natural environment.
As we prepare for the new program
year, there will be a significant change in our
worship services. An earlier worship service will
be added to our Sunday morning menu. It will
start at 9:30am and last for about 45 minutes.
The specific structure and content will be
determined by those who attend. Together we
will forge a way forward. We will plan some
checkpoints along the way to enable us to
evaluate our progress.
Our plan is also to have our Sunday
School meeting during this service. Elsewhere
in this newsletter you can read about our
curriculum as we kick off a new program year
for our Sunday School.
Our regular 11:00am service will
continue its traditional format with which we
are familiar. It will meet a few minutes earlier
at 10:45am. We will still have a time of
fellowship. That too will need some evaluation
as we continue. Currently we plan to have this
fellowship time BETWEEN the two worship
services. Of course, people will need to adjust
to this. We will be sure to monitor people's
response to this as well.
So, why these changes? It is in response
to the basic mandate we have as disciples. In
Romans 1:16 we read one version of this
mandate. "For I am not ashamed of the gospel,
for it is the power of God for salvation to
everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also
to the Greek." It will provide an additional
opportunity for us to reach out beyond our
walls and connect with our community in
sharing the gospel. We believe that the gospel
really matters, and this is a way to further its
reach.
Pray for us as we embark on this new
venture. But we urge you also to join us at the
time which will better suit your schedule.
Together we can make a difference.
Shalom,

Counseling Corner by Donna Ridge
I have been going through some trials of my
own lately. Over the last few days, I have been
waking during the night or have not been able
to get to sleep. I have been taught that if you
wake up in the night that means God is calling
you to pray. So, like the good prayer warrior I
am, I prayed. I prayed for my daughter who
just moved to Alaska, and I prayed for anyone
else that came to my mind.
The other morning I awoke at 4:30 after going
to bed at one. I got up and went into my living
room. Now let me tell you about the place
where I live. I live over a car parts store. Next
door is a long blue warehouse type building. It
is all paved except for a small area on the side
of my front door. It looks like a business, but in
the back is a treasure.
My living room window looks out over several
horse pastures. At the end of the furthest one
is a grove of trees. Sometimes they look like a
mountains and the pasture looks like a lake.
This particular morning, the fog was over the
pastures.
The horses were let out about five. They
looked bigger in the fog at dawn and it gave me
a sense of peace as they quietly grazed. My
heart was really moved as I thanked God for
the blessing of this place.
As I was basking in the beauty, I began to sing
the hymn, In the Garden. This hymn has
ministered to me many times in my life even as
a child. As I closed my eyes and sang the
chorus:
And He walks with me and He talks with me
And He tells me that I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.
Suddenly, I realized, He wanted to walk and talk
we me. I knew at that moment that all was
going to be well, because I am His own. I don’t
know how long I sat there just singing and
talking to the Lord, but when I opened my eyes,
the sun had come up and the fog was
dissipating. The Lord is so faithful. He can
speak to us in nature, through song or any
other way. His relationship with each of us is
unique as the line says:
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.
Take time today and bask in the love of the
Lord and the fog in your life will dissipate.

Mission Activities
The Wednesday Morning Bible Study class has
adopted a couple of mission activities.
Labels For Education and Box Tops
They will be sent to Red Bird Missionary
Conference, which is located in Southeastern
Kentucky and is the most comprehensive
mission effort of the United Methodist Church
in the United States. It provides outreach and
services that minister to the whole person
(spiritual, physical, social, and economic). They
will be able to use these labels/box tops to
purchase needed items for the school they run
(pre-school to high school). A collection jar and
a list of products that carry these labels/box
tops are available on the table outside the
Fellowship Hall.
Recyclable Greeting Cards
for St. Jude’s Ranch For Children
Their Recycled Card Program, an
entrepreneurial teen-run job training program,
teaches teen’s critical employment skills so
they are prepared to be productive, wage-
earning citizens in the community when they
leave St. Jude. Only the front of the card is
used, so any donated cards must not have
writing on the back of the front picture. Please
note: they do not accept Hallmark, Disney or
American Greeting Cards. There is a collection
box outside of Fellowship Hall.
If you wish to learn more about these two
mission activities or want to know how you can
help, please contact Anita Chichester for more
information.

Hymn Story The King of Love My Shepherd Is
Henry W. Baker, 1868 - UMH #138
The 23rd Psalm has been an immense source of
comfort to God’s people throughout history
and many a music verse has been inspired by
its words. And to many Christians the most
beloved musical paraphrase of the 23rd Psalm is
“The King of Love My Shepherd Is”, by Henry
Baker.
Baker combines the Old Testament thoughts of
King David with lessons from the New
Testament. For example, verse 3 is based on
the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15:5. And
verse 4 includes the phase “Thy cross before to
guide me”, thus identifying Christ as the
shepherd.
The hymn is often sung to the Irish melody “St.
Columba”, as found in the United Methodist
Hymnal. Just like the comforting Psalm that
inspired it, the hymn is sung frequently at
funerals. One of the more famous occasions
was the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in
1997; although on that occasion it was sung to
the tune “Dominus Regit Me”.
But it is a beautiful hymn that can be sung
anytime one wants to be reminded of the
comforting message it has to offer. There is
also a wonderful contemporary version of this
hymn performed by the band “I Am They”.
They faithfully retain the words of verses 1-4 &
6, while adding an uplifting praise chorus. You
can view a video of that version on the church
website under News & Media/Featured Videos.
Did You Know? A Pet Blessing event is being planned for
Saturday, October 1. Details for this event
will be available on the church website in
the near future.
Past issues of the DeBows UMC monthly newsletter can be downloaded and viewed from the church website under News & Media/Newsletter Archive.
Bulletins for the Sunday service are
available on a stand in the hallway leading
to the side door of the sanctuary. Bulletins
for children can also be found there along
with busy bags for kids.
You can contact the church office at 732-
928-4475 in the event of a pastoral care
situation that might need Pastor Ernie’s
attention. Voicemail is available.
Guy Raymond will lead a Praise Worship
Service on Saturday, September 10 at 6:30
PM. Come experience an uplifting message
and music.
Jackson Day 2016 is scheduled for Saturday,
September 10 (rain or shine). It will take
place at John F. Johnson Jr. Memorial Park
(Cooks Road and Manhattan Street),
starting at 11:00 AM.
You can submit questions, feedback or
suggestions by visiting the “Contact Us”
page on the church website. Select the
desired recipient from the pull down list
and compose/send the email.

Church Humor
Opportunities to Serve
There are many ways people can participate in
the life of the church. These are two of them:
Community Food Pantry – this is DeBows
flagship outreach program. It is open the 2nd &
4th Monday each month from 6-8pm. You can
also help with inventory stocking on the 2nd
Monday each month at 11am. If you would like
to volunteer time to support this ministry,
please see the sign-up sheet outside of
Fellowship Hall. You may contact Deb Cregle
for more information.
Fellowship Time – this is our weekly time of
informal gathering to greet each other and
visitors, and to share some light refreshments.
It is conducted between the 9:30am & 10:45am
Sunday worship services. If you would like to
host Fellowship Time on any given week, please
see the sign-up sheet, with guidelines, outside
of Fellowship Hall.
MAP Process Update As Labor Day approaches and summer draws to
a close, it is time turn our attention to the new
fall programming. This year that includes
finalizing the 2016 Ministry Action Plan (MAP),
which will be presented at our annual Church
Conference on October 22 as part of the
reporting process.
The process to create the MAP has been
happening since early in the year and included
church wide Town Hall meetings and surveys.
The Church Council is now working on creating
the MAP document, which will incorporate the
ideas collected from those events to help
define short and long term action items.
Some of the short term action items have
already been implemented; for example, the
new proposed fall schedule. Other long term
action items and goals will be implemented
over time, extending into 2017.
The MAP will also address the following
functional areas of a typical healthy church life
cycle:
Monitor the church website at debowsumc.org
for more information about this life cycle and
the emerging details of the MAP process and
recommendations.
