The 2004 New Student Survey was given to SOAR attendees on the first day of the 2-day orientationprogram. There were 2,180 non-transfer SOAR attendees, 2,006 of whom completed and returnedthe NSS. We were able to match 1,907 NSSs to the BANNER record of 2239 first-time, first-yearfreshman: These BANNER data were drawn two days after the student tuition payment deadline.

The resulting NSS profile for 2004 represents 87% of the SOAR participants and roughly 85% ofUNCG’s first-time/first-year freshmen for 2004.

A brief look at these data (valid percents) show:

• 55% said UNCG was their first choice. Of those for whom UNCG was not their first choice,25% said Chapel Hill was their first choice, 12% said NC State was their first choice, 23%said some other UNC system institution, 21% said an institution out of state, and 19% said anin-state private institution.

• 49% chose UNCG because of its location; 43% chose it because of its academic reputation.• 82% plan to be continuously enrolled at UNCG; about 10 % plan to transfer because of their

major; 7% plan to transfer for some other reason.• 31% said that math was their primary academic strength; 42% said math was their primary

weakness• 24% said that English was their primary academic strength; 14% said English was their

primary weakness.• 73% said that they studied 5 or fewer hours per week in high school; 92% said they studied 10

or fewer hours per week.• 55% expected to study outside of the college classroom for 10 hours or fewer per week.• 42% believed that their high school study habits would allow them to succeed at UNCG; 27%

did not.• 54% said that the knowledge they gained in high school prepared them for college; 18%

disagreed.• 19% said they never used their high school library to find information.• 71% were certain about their choice of major.• 33% do not plan to work at all during their first year.• 90% expected to be satisfied with social and out-of-class opportunities at UNCG (43%—

‘Always satisfied’, 47%—‘Usually satisfied’).• Only 9% indicated that they have NEVER participated in any community service activity.• 61% agreed that they can make a difference in the community here at UNCG.• 76% said that they plan to be involved in volunteer/community service while at UNCG.• 76% agreed that they wanted to develop their leadership skills while at UNCG; but only 47%
