We are excited to report that a gift from the Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Family Foundation has enabled us to take a big step

New Strategic PlanHMC Launches

with Rabbi Eli Mayerfeld at Helm

Newly appointed CEO Rabbi Eli Mayerfeld played an integral role in developing the Plan. He brings a wealth of experience and a love of education to his new position. He worked with key stakeholders, including board members, docents, staff and community members, to help in the planning process. The group worked together to identify four major priorities:n Making the HMC the nexus for the implementation of

Michigan’s new law requiring that all public and charter school students in grades 8-12 be taught about the Holocaust and other genocides

n Integrating HMC visits into a broader Holocaust education

n Raising awareness for younger generations n Refreshing our exhibits in order to keep them current.

For this purpose, we have engaged national exhibit design firm Ralph Appelbaum Associates to create a visualized master plan

Our Strategic Plan ushers in a new era for the HMC. With Rabbi Mayerfeld in place to oversee its implementation, we look forward to a bright future. His experience with the Jewish Wisdom Foundation, a non-profit that he founded, and as Executive Director of Yeshiva Beth Yehudah for 22 years, makes him the right person to lead the HMC into the future. As Rabbi Mayerfeld recently put it, he is “eager to continue playing a role in the evolution of this historic institution, executing our new Strategic Plan with an amazing team of professionals and volunteers.”

The May 10 Awards Ceremony

Volunteers at the Holocaust Memorial Center not only provide

an invaluable service to our museum and community, but often form lasting friendships with one another.

When docent Vicki Adler sat next to Museum Shop volunteer Annie Steinmetz at the Volunteer Thank You Brunch, it was a start to a long friendship and the end of a lifelong mystery. Through conversation, they discovered that Annie lived only 15 minutes away from Saarburg, Germany, where Vicki’s mother-in-law Elise Adler lived before WWII.

Vicki told Annie how Elise had escaped four months before the war started, but left many questions behind: What happened to her family? Vicki shared her experience of traveling to Saarburg in 2004 to find answers, while knowing only the name of the city and a house number. Although able to visit the town, she learned nothing about Elise’s parents or younger sister.

When Annie heard Vicki’s story, she wanted to help. Annie asked her mother Ruth to get involved, and after a number of phone calls the information began to arrive. Vicki learned that Elise’s parents and sister were forced from their home one month after Elise got out of Germany. They were deported to the Lodz ghetto and murdered in Chelmno.

The Adlers appreciate that Annie and Ruth helped them fill in some of the blank spaces in their family history. The Adlers are now planning to travel to Saarburg in 2018 to visit the Steinmetzes and to see Elise’s home. There they also will see the “Stumbling Blocks” imbedded in front that are engraved with details of Elise’s family’s lives and deaths.

Annie and Vicki are models for people reaching out to repair the world, and who in return have found a lifelong friendship.

Dear Holocaust Memorial Center,My students were extraordinarily moved.

As a teacher, I touch the lives of many students each year. What you have taught

will be learned not only by the students who visited today, but by hundreds of others who will pass through my classroom.

I will ask the questions that I hope will lead them to nurture tolerance, love and hope in their hearts, and I will encourage

them to stand up for anyone who needs their support.

With love and gratitude,Mrs. Holly CasslerWarren Woods Tower High School, Warren

Artifacts: Oh, the Stories They Can Tell!

The Holocaust Memorial Center is the repository of numerous Holocaust artifacts. They often have fascinating backgrounds from

which we can learn important historical and ethical lessons.Holocaust survivors Nathan, of blessed memory, and Sonia Nothman recently donated their Ex-Concentration Camp ID cards, dated January 1946 and October 1945. In order for displaced persons to receive benefits, such as a place to live, food rations and transportation out of Germany, a survivor had to be registered as a bonafide displaced

person. What is truly eye-opening in these particular documents is the “Reason for Arrest”: Jew and Jewess!

Another item with a little-known story is a pair of bookends given

by Rabbi Joseph Hertz, Chief Rabbi of England, to Levi Taylor.

Taylor was a German Jewish circus owner who travelled

throughout Europe. As the situation in Europe deteriorated, Taylor would

allow Jews to hide in the hay or to disguise themselves as clowns and

use his travel visas as they travelled through Europe and across the English Channel. Rabbi Hertz gave Taylor the pair of bookends, which are of German origin, as acknowledgement of his bravery and selflessness. The bookends were handed down to his grandson Jack Taylor, who graciously donated them to us. The circus was eventually sold to Ed Bailey of Barnum and Bailey fame.A mysterious piece of jewelry was donated to the HMC by a family who received it from Walter Kabarowski, a Polish freedom fighter who was imprisoned in Dachau. In Dachau, Kabarowski befriended a Jewish jeweler who gave him a handmade gold locket to deliver to his infant daughter, whom he left behind, in case he did not survive the camp. The inscription on the locket is a quote from a Polish poet which reads, “Every place I was forced to be, I left part of my soul as a gift to you.” Kabarowski came to Detroit and passed away in 1992 without ever locating the child’s whereabouts. This locket remains a symbol of a father’s love for his child from whom he was brutally and permanently separated.

So much of the good work we do at the Holocaust Memorial Center is a direct result of the dedication of our caring volunteers. I’m proud to share the

far-reaching work of two of our Board Members, Dr. Edward Malinowski and Dr. Nelson (Nick) Hersh.Dr. Malinowski recently became a Survivor Speaker, building upon his years of service as an HMC Board Member. It is difficult for Dr. Malinowski and many of his fellow HMC Survivor Speakers to share their stories, but their selflessness allows thousands of young people each year to hear a first-hand account of survival and hope in the darkest time. Dr. Malinowski is one of the very few survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto. Almost all of his family, including his father, perished in the Warsaw Ghetto and Treblinka. He and his mother escaped from the Ghetto and survived the war by moving from place to place in Poland until the Russian liberation in 1945. Dr. Malinowski spent the remainder of his childhood in war-ravaged Poland and was able to finish medical school as well as become an accomplished violinist. In 1969, he was forced by a wave of government-sponsored antisemitism to emigrate, and he arrived in America. After additional training at Sinai Hospital of Detroit, he established a cardiology practice. His story helps the HMC to educate the next generation about the critical need to stand up to hatred, antisemitism and genocide.

Dr. Hersh and his wife Sue will be honored at our upcoming 33rd Anniversary Dinner on November 5. Dr. Hersh, an orthodontist, volunteers as an English teacher for a few weeks each year in Dobczyze, Poland. Over the past few years, he has developed a relationship with the people of Dobczyze and has been welcomed by them as family. The education Dr. Hersh gives is not limited to language; he teaches them how similar we all are, destroying preconceived notions they may have about Americans or Jews. He also funds yearly trips for his students to Auschwitz, which is an hour drive away from Dobczyze. During his most recent trip, Dr. Hersh looked deeper into the Jewish community of Dobczyze, which had been murdered in the Holocaust. Though so much of Jewish life had been wiped away, one of the townspeople showed him the mikva (ritual bath). It is dilapidated after having been burned, with only three walls standing. Dr. Hersh is currently working on making this a historic landmark in order to preserve it.

Thank you to Doctors Malinowski and Hersh and all of the HMC’s Board Members, Survivor Speakers and other wonderful volunteers for carrying forward the HMC’s mission to engage, educate and empower by remembering the Holocaust.
