A Note from Rev. Mason
20 3
“When Leaders Fall From Grace” A number of years ago I preached a sermon on the failure of leaders based on the Biblical text of 1 Timothy 1:12-17. The focus of the sermon was on leaders who become entangled in sin; and what our response should be as the faithful followers of Christ. The sermon focused on ten key points that are outlined below:
1. Don’t rush to judgment (our judging of another regardless of their sin is a sin in itself). 2. There are many temptations in life (because a leader fell to a specific sin, maybe different than our own, what then about our own?).
3. We have all sinned. 4. This family has standards (not only personal family but the family of Christ so let us live up to them).
5. Don’t spend time looking for the faults in others. 6. Don’t spread rumors (another sin).
7. Live the biblical command not only to “Love the Family of Be-lievers” and to “Fear God,” but also to “Honor the emperor” (1 Pe-ter 2:17). 8. Don’t make light of sin (to water it down makes light of our need for repentance and also makes light of the sufficiency of God’s grace; salvation).
9. We must be forgiving (forgive us as we have forgiven?). 10. Be a part of the solution (pray for your leaders rather than seeking wrath upon them, “Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord”).
Perhaps these should be the modern 10 commandments for Christians,
in a modern world, and with the United Methodist Church. We live in a
time when there is so much cynicism entering our lives through those elec-
tronic boxes (TV, Computer, Cell phones) 24 hours each and every day. A
medium that was designed to enhance our lives rather than to bring us
down! Something to think about!
Rev. Lyndon R. Mason
Family Promise............ Mary had a good job. She had been working for the same company for over 15 years. During that time Mary, along with her two children, escaped her abusive husband to start a new life. Making ends meet was tough but workable. And for a lot of years, Mary was proud to be self-sufficient. The number of hours she was working as a roadside assistance customer service rep increased....until they didn’t. With the company’s sales down, dispatch calls were down too. That meant Mary’s work shift hours began declin-ing. Eventually, Mary’s good job became one that barely paid the bills. Then it didn’t pay the bills. Within a few months, she was evicted from her apartment. She and her children slept on friends’ couches until they couldn’t any longer—until their welcome was worn out. That’s when the streets became home. All along the way, Mary did what she could to provide for her children even if they had no roof over their heads. Her kids weren’t in school. Many days they hardly had any-thing to eat. Many nights they feared for their lives. But what Mary feared most was that her children would be taken away. That is what haunted her until she got into Fam-ily Promise. “I was lucky because there is a waiting list at other social services centers. Initially, they said it would be a few weeks. I didn’t have a few weeks. Then a spot opened up at Family Promise and they gave it to us.”
From that day forward, Mary’s life changed. Within 60 days, she was back on her feet knowing how to market her skills, working at a new job and living in a new apartment. Mary had a new life! Too many families are living Mary’s sad story, and too few are getting the help they need. That’s when Family Promise launched their iPromise3 campaign in an effort to increase capacity so more people can live Mary’s story rather than a tragic story of the streets. “The referral service sent me to a number of shelters, but I was shocked at how my family would be broken up. I was frightened to leave my two young sons alone in a place like that, so I started to plan how we could all sleep in my car.” Since there are five of them, she figured two of them would sleep in the trunk. “I kept blankets in the car so I was always prepared.” “I was so happy when we found Family Promise,” Mary continued...“We could stay to-gether and there was help with making plans to get back on our feet. And my children really enjoyed the volunteers that welcomed us to the churches. It meant so much to all of us at a very scary time.” Today, Mary and her children are successfully living independently. She is working and the children are all in school and doing well.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
Carolyn Garbacz, Christian Education Superintendent—(623) 975-1615
Sunday School classes did not meet in July except for the Adult SS class.
Nursery was not available during July.
Our Nursery volunteer attendant, Jeri Raasch, retired June 16 after serving
faithfully for eight plus years. Katie Manning, our paid attendant, is still with
us. We are currently looking for a second adult attendant to help along with
Katie during the 10:30am service.
We are in dire need of a lead Sunday School teacher for the pre-K through 4th
grade class. Those who stepped up for February through the end of June
were a Godsend to New Song. Most of them felt they did not sign up to be on
the Christian Ed committee to teach classes. So now we are facing a difficult
situation.
The 5th thru 8th grade class meets with the 9th thru 12th grade class under
the direction of David Hoffman and Emily Cox. I feel they should be split up,
but, again, not enough volunteers. Some of our youth and volunteer adults
went on their mission trip near San Diago, CA, and have returned home safe-
ly.
Lastly, I will be stepping down as “Ms. Carolyn, teacher” due to health
reasons. I will continue as Christian Education Superintendent for the time
being.
Note: Our program is a safe sanctuary church, which means there must be at
least two teachers or a teacher and assistants. Call me if you can help!

Nurse’s Corner..... (continued from page 17)
When should you wash your hands? (Ask the children who attended VBS *
* Before, during, and after preparing food * Before eating food * Before and after caring for someone who is sick * Before and after treating a cut or wound * After using the toilet * After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet * After blowing your nose, coughing , or sneezing * After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste * After handling pet food or pet treats * After touching garbage How should you wash your hands? (Ask the children who attended VBS to provide you a demonstration) * Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold). Turn off the tap, and apply soap. * Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands between the fingers and under the nails. * Scrub your hands for a least 20 seconds. * Rinse your hands well under running water * Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. (When us- ing public restrooms, turn off the faucet with a dry towel and open the door with a dry towel whenever possible).
If soap and water is not available use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol (check the expiration date). Sanitiz-ers do NOT eliminate all types of germs and might not remove harmful chemicals. HAND SANITIZERS ARE NOT AS EFFECTIVE WHEN HANDS ARE VISIBILY DIRTY OR GREASY.
How do you use hand sanitizers? * Apply the product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount). One source I read stated a dime size dollop is adequate. * Rub your hands together. * Rub the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry.
KEEP HYDRATED! Have a healthy August.

NEW BIRTH MEXICAN MISSION
After my husband had major surgery, a home health nurse visited every day for wound care. Every time the nurse came, she would leave a package of swabs or unopened wound bandages and lots of items of a medical nature. Added to the nurse’s contributions, we also had numerous medical items that we had purchased. The New Birth Mexican Mission will take all medical items, medications, surgical boots, glasses, hearing aids, vitamins and supplements, etc., as well as many other items including food. For a complete list, contact their local representative identified below, Ann Haggerty or me. The website, newbirthmexicanmission.org, has a wealth of information about their many years of mission work in Mexico. Mission contact is through email at [email protected] or you can call their local representative, Phil, at 623-939-7223. Many blessings, Pat Howard
Summer, it’s a Sizzling! Not a summer goes by that folks around the USA don’t talk about the heat. In some states it’s the summer humidity; others, it’s no humidity, just heat. In Arizona, we fall into the no humidity, just heat. The record for Phoenix’s hottest day was June 26, 1990 at 122 degrees.
Many folks think our hottest weather happens in August each year but that’s usually because of the humidity caused by our yearly “Monsoon” season. This month we get the heat and the humidity, and it just feels hotter. The heat feel’s hotter with the humidity, and that’s a scientific fact, just check the heat index.
Folks talking about the weather and our planet seem to think all this hotter weather is a recent phenomenon. But these hot and cold cycles have oc-curred over the centuries. There are clues in the growth rings of old trees that reflect good and bad years of weather. We also have evidence from old ice flow studies reflecting weather patterns. With the heat comes some caution. Protect your pets! If you place your hand on a sidewalk and can’t hold it there-for at least 5-10 seconds, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Also, keep lots of water in the pet bowl with maybe an ice cube or two!
Headed to the airport? We have had the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport close on several occasions during the hot weather season because the air was too hot for the planes to get any lift!
And remember, when choosing to live in the cold or the heat, “you don’t have to shovel sunshine”! (From the American Retirement Advisor by David Edge.)

Proverbs 16:24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. During a recent meeting I was made aware of the fact that Arizona is one of
several states across the country experiencing a Hepatitis A outbreak. As of
July 11, 2019, there have been 229 cases in Maricopa County related to this
outbreak. More than 80% have been hospitalized. There has been one con-
firmed death in Maricopa County related to this outbreak. This person was
included in the populations at highest risk.
The following groups are most at-risk:
People who use injected or non-injected illicit drugs
People experiencing unstable housing or the homeless
People who are or recently were in jail or prison
People attending childcare or work in a childcare center
“Hepatitis A is a serious and contagious liver disease caused by a virus. It is
usually spread when the virus is taken in by mouth from contact with objects,
food or drinks contaminated by feces or stool of an infected person. The dis-
ease can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a severe illness
lasting several months. Hepatitis A is not a lifelong infection like other types of
hepatitis can be. Once you get it, you cannot get it again.” The incubation
period of Hepatitis A is usually 14–28 days.
Signs and symptoms may include: (Some people with Hepatitis A do not have symptoms) * Abdominal pain * Nausea
* Diarrhea
* Tiredness
* Dark urine
* Fever
* Loss of appetite
* Light or gray colored stools
* Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
An infected person is most contagious about two weeks before symp-
toms appear until about one week after jaundice appears. People with this
infection cannot work as food handlers, healthcare providers, or child-
care workers until symptoms have stopped.
Handwashing is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting
sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are
spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water.

The People of New Song UMC
Remember When ??? Picking Fruit???
“It’s our people that makes New Song such a special
church, said Rev. Marshall. We have a delightful mix of
energetic, enthusiastic, and committed Christians of all
ages. We worship together, pray together, play together,
and are working together to build God’s church here in
Surprise.
The New Song congregation is an active one, involved in the community in many
ways. Members prepare and serve hot meals to hundreds of homeless men
during the winter months at the downtown Phoenix Homeless Shelter, provide
food boxes to needy families at Thanksgiving and Christmas, have picked and
donated over a ton of fresh citrus fruit and contributed to many local charities.
New Song is an official Stephen Ministry church and has several certified Ste-
phen ministers engaged in caring ministers engaged in caring ministries.
Bible studies, fellowship groups, small Sharing/Caring groups and other church
activities bring members together to build relationships and strengthen faith.
New Song offers a variety of programs and ministries designed to meet the
needs of our community. Many more ministries are needed and will be offered
once we have a facility. Some of those programs waiting to be started include a
day-care/pre-school, Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs, Vacation Bible School,
youth programs, and community outreach.”
Editor’s note: This is how New Song began. Recognize some of these pro-
grams mentioned? We’re still doing some of them today and have added a lot
more.

FINANCE NEWS.....
“This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of
God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks
to God.” (2nd Corinthians 9:12)
We want to thank the donor (anonymous) who has given $15,000 to
cover the cost of the new air conditioner for the Sanctuary. As you enjoy the
coolness of your Sunday worship, please say a prayer of thanksgiving for this
most generous giver.

Report from Trustees –July—Church Council Meeting
Dave Hunt continues to meet with our lawyer and representatives from the City of Sur-
prise concerning the new sanctuary building. Three issues remain.
Good News: A new air conditioner was installed; the roof has been sealed and repaired.
Numbers have been installed on both inside doors and outside doors as
requested by Safety Committee.
We are looking at scheduling another work day, when it gets a little cooler, to finish up
some outside work that needs to be done at the Church.
New contract for the Valley Child Care (our tenant) has been accepted.
Presently, we are securing quotes to clean up our palm (11 in all) trees.
Rick Winnan, Co-Chair of Trustees
REMINDER!!
Getting your calendar dates approved: All building use request forms MUST be
given to Jeannie before being submitted to the Church Council. Jeannie will veri-
fy the dates are available and then pass the request on to Church Council for
final approval. If there is a conflict, Jeannie will notify you.
We are a VERY BUSY church, Praise the Lord, and space is limited. We can avoid
infringing on space reserved by other groups if we just work together. The
building use forms are in the office in the file next to the mailboxes. Thank you
for your cooperation. Thank you for your cooperation.

Animals 4 God will resume hosting the Reading Program on Tuesday,
August 13, at 6pm. Hope to see ya’ll there!
While I would love to be able to say that all our pets in Animals 4 God are always very well behaved, I cannot, as that would be an outright lie. One of the problems we have with our Greyhound, Megan, is that she digs. Our back yard is full of holes (that I am certain will someday reach to China) if we don’t figure out how to stop her. So, here are
some suggestions as to “How to Stop Your Dog from Digging,” by Amy Bender.
So, why do dogs dig? Dogs can get bored, so they look for ways to amuse themselves, if they are left to their own devices. Digging and burying things is part of a dog’s instinct,
although it can be to relieve anxiety.
In an attempt to stop a dog from digging, they may need playtime with you. Plan on spending at least an hour playing and exercising your dog every day. Some suggestions are: Take your dog for a walk, play fetch or tug-of-war with them, do several training
sessions each day, get involved in dog sports, or take your dog to a dog park.
If your dog likes to bury things, don’t let it take its toys outside. If you are outside with your dog, you can allow toys if you’re using them to play with your dog. Frisbees or balls
are great if you’re playing fetch.
If all else fails (yes, Megan, that would be for you), provide a specific spot for them to dig. A sandbox would work, or simply a spot in the yard specifically set aside for digging. To make this work, you will need to supervise it outside. If the dog digs anywhere but the designated spot, tell it “no” and redirect it to the correct spot. Give your dog lots of praise
for digging in this area to reinforce that it’s allowed. (Bender, 2019)
CAN YOU HELP?... We are passionate about bringing the healing effect of dogs’ uncondi-tional love into the lives of people in the community, especially those who are home-bound or in a medical facility. Becoming a therapy dog team involves a bit of work beforehand, but the effort is well worth it. If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a Dog/Handler team for therapy work, please contact us at: [email protected].
Interested in becoming a part of our ministry? You don’t have to own a pet or even be a member of New Song to join. You just need to have a desire to serve God by planning and participating in activities which involve enriching the lives of others by sharing our pets. We also strive to do God’s will as He challenges us to care for all the animals of the Earth by hosting educational activities with guest speakers and organizing collection events to donate to area shelters. We meet at the church on the fourth Saturday of the month at 9:00 a.m.

"Come just as you are. Hear the Spirit call.” This is from one of the song's we sing. “Come just as you are. Hear the Spirit Call.” “Come and see. Come receive.” What is it that is so powerful about these lines in the song? For me, it is the reminder of God's over-whelming abundance of grace. For all that we are broken human beings, for all that we are sinners, for all that we may make choices that bury us within our own destructive tendencies, there is nothing in the world that separates us from God. God's love is all powerful, ever flowing, and during our deepest moments of despair, the Lord our God can lift us from it all. What good news! The greatest news! What joy! There is nothing in our power we could ever do to lose relationship with God! God has given us his grace, and there is nothing we can do to turn him away. He will always be there for us no matter how many times we have intentionally or unintentionally turned away. All we need to do is say "Yes, I am sorry. Be with me, Father." And he is right by our side! Lord, thank you for this holiest of gifts that we could never have deserved, yet you gave it freely. Thank you for building a relationship with us, Father, and teach us to love because it was you who loved us first. Thank you, God, Almighty Father. Amen
Thank Offering
In April, the “Thank Offering” received donations of nearly $300. All of this mon-
ey goes into our Mission Fund. Many donations are anonymous and others use
the envelope as their opportunity to give special thanks to someone or for
something that has happened in their lives. The following were some of the
reasons for special thanks: “To help the poor”, “Family”, “Missions”, “Friends
and faith.” We have so many reasons to be thankful. Why not show your thanks
for someone who has done something special, or for something that has hap-
pened in your life.
”We are thankful for the life of Jean Hawn, beloved daughter of 60 year-long
friends, Al and Arleen Bonello.” Jerry and Joanne Goode. Did you know that all
donations, however big or small, go directly to our Mission Committee.

HELP!!! EVE’S COOKERS A LONG TIME ministry in our church to help abused persons, EVE’S COOKERS is in need of rejuvenation. We would love to keep this ministry alive and cook-ing! What does EVE’S COOKERS do? We provide about 40 4-6 serving casseroles a month that the Eve’s Place Advocates provide to abused persons and their families in need. We also provide brownies. We meet in the church kitchen on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 8am and 9am to prepare the casseroles. We do have other opportunities of service: shoppers, pre-cookers, delivery, brownie bakers if you are unable to be there on Saturdays. This is a very worthwhile ministry, plus it is a fun time for those that have been involved. We HOPE that with your help and prayers we can keep this ministry going. An informational/planning meeting will be held on Saturday, August 17th at 9am. If you are interested, please call/text/email Ann Haggerty at 623-261-3221 or [email protected]. If you cannot attend, but have interest, let Ann know.
