Musings From Your EditorI couldn’t help but take notice recently in an article by Ken Willis of the Daytona Beach News Journal entitled, “Klein back to NSB (didn’t he just leave?)” After gradu-ating from Jacksonville University with a degree in eco-nomics - though he says he majored in football -, Mike Klein (2010) was recruited by NSBHS head football coach, Kevin Hubbard, to come home and join his staff. He’s also teaching on the educational staff of his alma mater.

The article got me to think-ing, it would be interesting to take a poll of how many New Smyrna Beach High School grads have re-turned to their old home town to live. It is, of course, neces-sary to leave to go to college or

enter the military, but even those of us who were gone for decades to pursue careers and lives in other parts of the country or the world have found out that truly, “there’s just no place like home.”

My husband, Ron, and I went together in NSBHS when it was down on Live Oak Street - now that ages me, doesn’t it?. He played football and baseball, and I was a cheerleader; not much different than young people to-day. We were later married, he went away to Korea with the U.S. Army, and after he came home we then moved north to pursue our careers and raise a family. Though we had been home on vacation many times during the intervening years, I will never forget the day we literally moved back in retirement. When we drove down Canal Street, and though it was completely unplanned, tears rolled down my cheeks. I was home. There’s just some-thing about this little town….

How many times I have had this conversation with others who have done similarly? Do you belong to this unique company? Let me hear from you. I’d love to publish your comments.

2016 ‘Cuda AcheiversThe following two ‘Cuda graduates are a small representation of the many outstanding alumni of New Smyrna Beach High School. They were nominated by their peers. You are invited and encouraged to attend the ceremony at the high school, 1030am, in the auditorium, on the day of our annual fund raising spaghetti dinner, February 6, 2016.

If you know of a former classmate who, in your estimation, has gone on to exceptionally succeed in his or her field of endeavor, please submit name and a brief bio of that individual to:

Dr. Carol Kelley, 1025 S. Glencoe Road, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32168

We will be happy to consider your nomination for the 2017 program.

William Ray Mitchum is a true example of “local boy makes good in his own hometown.” In his own words, Ray states:

“As one of twelve chil-dren raised in South Carolina, by a father whose profession was a minister, many foun-dational strengths were instilled and

practiced early in my childhood. My family moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida in 1970 and I graduated from New Smyrna Beach High School in 1975. Shortly after graduation, knowing that I needed to acquire and develop additional skills beyond my high school educa-tion in order to succeed, my specific path was chosen not in postsecondary education, but instead several years of long-term on-the-job training. I learned about and became interested in becoming a lineman. The Utilities Commission was the only entity in New Smyrna Beach offering a technical industry job which included on-the-job training and benefits for its employees.”

Beginning in 1980 and spending his entire career with the Utilities Commission, Ray worked his way to success in the Electric Department as a Maintenance Worker, Lineman, Foreman, Supervisor, and finally Director of Electric Operations. In 2010 he was made the General Manager and CEO of the Utilities Commission where he continues to serve with distinction.

Ray is married to another NSBHS graduate, Brenda Grabiak, and is the father of three.

Shannon Hall-Mills graduated from New Smyrna Beach High School in 1995. She attained a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in C o m m u n i c a t i o n Science & Disorders from Florida State University, complet-ing her studies in April, 2010. She also holds a Certificate of Clinical

Competence in Speech-Language Pathology, Licensure to Practice Speech-Language Pathology, Teaching Certification in Speech-Language Impaired (K-12) and FSU Program for Instructional Excellence.

Teaching on-campus as well as distance learning, Shannon has taught undergraduate courses in Language Development, Applied Research, Research Evaluation, Phonetics & Phonetics Lab and Introduction to CSD. She has also taught graduate courses in Developmental Communication Disorders: School Age Issues, Schools Practicum, Language and Learning Disabilities, Linguistic Research in Reading and Language Arts and Fluency Disorders.

Married, and the author of many publications and presenter at many national educational forums, Professor Hall-Mills has been, since 2011, employed on the full-time Academic Faculty, School of Communication Science and Disorders, at FSU.

Class of ‘55 60th ReunionFriday, Oct 23 a welcoming BBQ was held at Wanda and Ken Phillips’ place. Saturday morning, classmates breakfasted together, then carried out their class “good will” project by visiting the homes of two elder NSB ‘Cudas who have contributed to the community. First honoree was Lois Tipton (‘41), former florist and columnist for the NSB News and Observer, and second honoree was Breece McCray (‘48), former Mayor of NSB. Each were presented with engraved commemorative plaques, balloons and gifts. Lois responded with a thank you letter to the class:

“I just hope you all know how very much I appreciated the wonderful honor your class bestowed on me. It will always be a highlight of my life. I went to bed last night remembering your kindness… ‘you made my day.”

Saturday evening we enjoyed the dinner cruise conducted by Dolphin View Restaurant. This was a special 60th milestone for the great ‘Cuda class of 1955 - enjoying our theme: “We Made It!”

Where Are They NowMy name is Erin Krall (Clancy). I was a recipient of the CAPS Scholarship in 2004. My senior year was very eventful, as I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer right before the 1st semester was fi nishing up. At that time, I did not know if I would complete the next semester of High School, but I knew that I would work just as hard as I always had in the past; not letting cancer get in my way. I am immensely proud to be an Alumni of NSBHS and have the greatest memories of my time there. Th e professors and administration went above and beyond to accommodate any possible circumstance that may arise while I was in treatments. Th e student body rose to the occasion and partici-pated in a 5k in my honor. It is that sense of community that I remember today.

I was truly honored to receive the CAPS Scholarship to further my educa-tion. Every little bit helps, and CAPS helped a lot! Moving away and going to college can be stressful, so having scholarships helped ease that stress. It made going to college a smooth transition from high school. I have gone on to graduate from UCF with a Bachelor in Science of Psychology and from Remington College of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. During my college career, I made a point to volunteer with the American Cancer Society and speak at events about my survivorship and aspirations.

In 2013, I graduated from Nursing school, got married to fellow Alumnus, JC Krall, bought a house, and started working at Bert Fish. My husband and I have chosen to live in the same community where we grew up. We are blessed to be so close to the beach and river. Our family still lives here, and my little brother will be attending NSBHS in the fall. I became a nurse because I wanted to make an impact on patients as my nurses had done for me. I feel enormous pride in my chosen profession as a Nurse. Everyday I go to my job with the hopes of making someone else’s day a little brighter. In the next fi ve years, I have ambitions to further my career.

My passion for helping others makes me believe that I wouldn’t be able to leave bedside nursing, so hopefully a career as a Nurse Practitioner is in the cards. Possibly, it would be in a Pediatric Oncology unit so I could spread words of hope and compassion to those who are now going through what I did 11 years ago.

My advice for the future applicants would be to never give up on your dreams, apply for every scholarship, volunteer, and be an active participant in your community.
