The Solution: KVH’s TracPhone V3 and mini-VSAT Broadband ServiceThe TracPhone V3 is licensed by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and includes a fully stabilized, 15.5" (39 cm) antenna unit that weighs just 25 lbs (11.3 kg), a powerful ViaSat ArcLight® spread spectrum modem, and a sleek antenna control unit that are all fully integrated and configured for easy installation. ArcLight spread spectrum technology enables very small antennas like KVH’s TracPhone V3 to receive satellite transmissions with the speed and reliability of older, 1-meter VSAT antennas that use the TDMA transmission schemes. KVH’s high-efficiency RingFire™ antenna design and dielectric feed rod technology combine to help the TracPhone V3 offer great performance, even in poor weather, and its rugged, lightweight design is perfect for use in commercial applications.

A managed airtime network solution, KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband network equips vehicles/vessels with true broadband connections (downloads as fast as 2 Mbps and uploads as fast as 1 Mbps), as well as Voice over IP (VoIP) telephone lines with optimized service and prioritization of applications. The network uses ViaSat ArcLight spread spectrum technology, a reliable and efficient technology proven in both commercial and military applications. The service is ideal for demanding applications, providing reliable connections in remote areas and adverse weather conditions.

Installation and ActivationGore Nitrogen is taking advantage of KVH’s TracPhone lease program, which spreads the cost of the hardware out over three years. The company pays one bill each month for hardware and airtime, which saves time in the main office. They purchased the TracPhone V3 from a certified KVH dealer in Oklahoma, who completed the activation in a single day.

“They did a great job going over every page of the contract, making sure we understood everything and that we were happy,” says Mr. Bensch. “The enclosed antenna is awesome, and even the back of the TracPhone V3’s belowdecks rack is neat and organized. This is a huge improvement over our old system – the belowdecks equipment looked kind of goofy and the techs who removed the antenna actually got soaked because it was holding a couple of gallons of water.”

Results/Impact “The mini-VSAT Broadband phone line has saved my bacon several times! Even when cell service is available, the frac van is still a metal box that can make calls difficult. Being able to communicate clearly is key,” says Mr. Bensch. “With mini-VSAT Broadband, the voice quality is better than a cell phone – very clear and it doesn’t drop out when you turn your head!”

“The need for data at well sites is increasing,” Mr. Bensch points out. “Our customers want reports generated and sent, and cell phone service just isn’t available everywhere. Ten years ago, you may have seen one satellite antenna on a job, but now there are multiples. It’s kind of a ‘have-to’ thing now.”

However, the price of hardware and equipment – while small in comparison to other costs on a well site – can be an obstacle, especially when the service does not perform as promised. “Any time you can spend a little more money and get a superior product, I’m all for it. But the thing is, our KVH solution is far superior AND more affordable than what we had before,” says Mr. Bensch. “We started out on a promotional rate with our old service, then one night it just stopped working. It took a week to get back online, and the cost quadrupled while the contention ratio hit 30:1. The unlimited bandwidth was worthless because we couldn’t use it. Those problems are completely eliminated with KVH – we get what we pay for and we don’t have to mess with it.”

“We love the TracPhone V3 – it saves me a lot of time and it always works,” he continues. “In fact, when it gets really cold, the frac van’s onboard computer stops working but the V3 doesn’t! Eventually, we would like to add another TracPhone system to at least one of our low-rate trucks because they’re on site even longer than the frac van. It can be as long as two months and we’ve had jobs where we had to drive these vehicles ten miles just for cell service. KVH completely eliminates that cost and inconvenience.”
