This is a rendering of El Cuartel ("the Headquarters") which was the original Spanish seat of government for Alta California – everything from Mexico to Canada and from the Pacific to what is now Denver. The Alcalde’s office (the governor’s office) and the administrative offices for the State were downstairs, the soldiers’ barracks were upstairs. The intent of the new building design at 595 Munras is to incorporate the historical style of El Cuartel into this modern mixed-use building - El Cuartel Nuevo!

Across the street is a very successful retail center anchored by Trader Joe's. Also across the street is the newly renovated Cooper Molera Adobe https://coopermolera.org/. This famous historical building is now home to Alta Bakery https://www.altamonterey.com/ , Cella Restaurant & Bar http://cellarestaurant.com/, and the Barns at Cooper Molera https://coopermolerabarns.com/

As a result of the renovation of Cooper Molera, and the re-purposing of a former Safeway store to be Trader Joe's, along with a roster of quality retailers, this area of downtown Monterey now has a modern "sense of place" in the downtown area and is known as "Uptown Monterey", a new retail experience drawing from the rich heritage of Monterey's beginnings! This is the place to be when in Monterey! The new 595 Munras retail spaces will be an integral part of the new Uptown Monterey experience.
