This is a rendering of El Cuartel ("the Headquarters") which was the original Spanish seat of government for Alta California – everything from Mexico to Canada and from the Pacific to what is now Denver. The Alcalde’s office (the governor’s office) and the administrative offices for the State were downstairs, the soldiers’ barracks were upstairs. As a result of the renovation of Cooper Molera, and the re-purposing of a former Safeway store to be Trader Joe's, along with a roster of quality retailers, this area of downtown Monterey now has a modern "sense of place" in the downtown area and is known as "Uptown Monterey", a new retail experience drawing from the rich heritage of Monterey's beginnings! This is the place to be when in Monterey! The new 595 Munras retail spaces will be an integral part of the new Uptown Monterey experience.
